I appreciate the advice, and I may well check out the RC tonight. I know my wife is a big hesitant to go out in Doha, after our Ramada incident, but I will see if she is up for it. My wife is a Filipina-Canadian, born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, but in the Ramada she was getting a lot of looks as if she was "new meat" in a sea of Filipina "companions". It wasn't nearly as bad as this in the Emirates, so hopefully the rugby club will be a bit less stressful for her.

My wife and I just arrived in Doha from the west coast of Canada, and while we are more than happy with the job and general living situations, we are a bit at a loss to find a decent crowd to hang with. We are younger than all the fogies in our compound and the few cool folks there dragged us to see a band at the Ramada the other night, which featured some rather amaturish singers in red spandex hooor-suits. Pretty racy outfits, but whatever helps take the focus off the ladies' adam's apples!!!

Anyway, we could definately be up for some QUIF. We went to Rydges, briefly the other night, and it seemed ok. But I am not sure what to compare it to.

I am trying to decide whether or not to accept that same position with ITT as a mechanic. Have you made it to Qatar yet? My main concern is the working conditions..first off I was told I would be working 12hrs 6 days a week, with about the same monthly income as you listed, so with that much work the money isn't really that good. Not sure how you talked them into 5days a week..If that were the case it would make my decision much easier. I'm hoping that with housing and food allowance I can save alot of it though. Anyone know if this works tends to be indoors, or am I out in the weather all day long. I'm not sure I can hack a qatari summer if I have to spend it all outside?

I dont know where the exact location of the villa yet as i am still getting information about the whole job/career thing. Yes it is brand new from what i hear and fully furnished. One of the bedrooms is a office, there is a living room, kitchen, dining room, and extra bedrooms. My roommate here in the US has moved to Qatar and did the exact thing that i will be doing and he said the villas they get are really nice. I just have to work really long hours every day. 6:00am till 6:30pm 5 days a week

The Company i will actually be working for is called ITT and they subcontract for the military...I will be a humvee mechanic and they pay 3400 us dollars every two weeks and its all tax free which is awsome...they pay for living and transportation and give me 30 us dollars a day for food. That is why i am going over there, so i can just save tons of money because they pay for everything. I want to live in a new place to i have always been in nice places...for i have lived on the beach in florida my whole life. I think the military pays for a 4 bedroom villa for me and i can share it with whom ever i want.

I'm actually coming from Toronto, Canada. Any good villas you can think of to share? Must be in a nice area and must be new..have you thought of your living arrangements so far?

Call it "The Qatar Expat" . It has a music lounge, bar, snooker corner and a coffee house. Now, that is somewhere I want to be after work. Not a friendship club. It's too childish a name for a place to be.

Rydges would be fine with me, but as there are Qatari people among us I don't think that a bar is a good idea :)

Ha, my boss just told me that Rugby Club is "cliquey" and you can't buy booze - you have to buy a book of tickets and then exchange the tickets for drinks. Should be fun :D
