This dog was found this morning at Tebah Gardens in Azzizziya. It will be collected this afternoon by police if we don't reunite it with it's owner. Please PM me if this is your dog!

hey, i'm filipino too and i love dogs. i love 'em more than i love some people. i am pretty sure that i'll like any dog more than you ladylady.

anyway, i hope the dog finds its owner or get a good home. if i only live in better accommodation i'd have fostered a dog already.

I know the gov vets well (not as well as Chelsea or Xena!) I can assure you they would never ever destroy a collared cat. I have 3 cats under my care at the moment that were found by the gov vets that are being brought back to tip top health. Completely the opposite they are very good!

Xena, Chelsea - thanks so very much to both!

this is a new service provided by the ministry, and its proving useful, in that when the government control unit get called out to trap dogs, they will immediately scan them for a microchip to see if its a lost/registered dog, so going down to the ministry and registering your pet's Microchip number IS a good idea.

By Chelsea• 11 May 2011 13:44
Chelsea

You can find the registration form and decleration of ownership forms at http://www.moe.gov.qa/English/SitePages/Default.aspx in the Public Service section. You will need to complete one of each form for each animal and take your ID copy, photos of the dogs and copies of their vaccination records to the Animal Resource Department on Airport Road (Sun - Thurs, 7.30am - 12.30pm).

You can also register them in an overseas database too. When QAWS has an animal brought in that is microchipped, we check it against all the main databases around the world.

Obviously it would be easier if everyone just registered with the Ministry here as it would save a lot of time!

Chelsea thanks for your recommendation. My dogs are chipped but I don't know who to contact in this case.

With the cultural insensitivity towards these animals, calling the police is the last thing I would ever do in this case.

By anonymous• 11 May 2011 13:05

or just tell the police that you've already found the owner of the dog??

By jjj75• 11 May 2011 13:04

thanks, and they made out it was the municipality coming in removing and destroying them, hence their reasoning that they had little say over whether they picked up someone's pet or just a stray

the government vet does not destroy cats. That must be a private company. Tell your management company that what is being done is illegal.

Well Chelsea - someone official has rounded up cats on our compound on more than one occasion and we have been warned by the management that even if our cats have collars they can be rounded up and destroyed

Hi Chelsea - thanks for the info.

The gate guard called the police - I guess he didn't know what else to do. My friend that took him to the vet and lives on the compound told they guy NOT to let the police take him and that we're sorting something out.

Thankyou for checking your records as well!!

Just a question - who called the police to tell them to collect the dog? Can they be persuaded to call them back and tell them it's been sorted :)

By Chelsea• 11 May 2011 12:20
Chelsea

QAWS is full at the moment so can't take the dog in though we have checked our records and he's not one that's been reported missing to us.

Does anybody have a garden he can stay in for a few days whilst a solution is found for him?

FYI:

- the Ministry trap, neuter & return cats. If cat's are being rounded up and destroyed then that's a private pest control company - not the Ministry.

- the Police do collect up dogs and put them to sleep as there are no holding facilities for stray dogs. Pet owners MUST have some form of identification - whether it be a tag with a phone number or a microchip.

- Dogs are not allowed in public areas, which includes the Corniche, the Parks, Malls etc and this should be respected at all times. This is well known and in-keeping with the local culture. One irresponsible dog owner can make life difficult for all dog owners in Qatar.

- Microchipping your pet is not enough - pet owners MUST register the chip for it to be of any use! The Ministry here have a microchip database and it is recommended that animals are registered there. A microchip does not store owner's information in it so if you have not registered your pet with a microchip database then the microchip is useless.

he seemed well taken care of so must be the owner is looking for him. Bring him to QAWS, a better place for him.

Its a Saluki breed the typical breed here in Doha, that is why its skinny.

Rizkz - it's proper dog food. I know what cats and dogs do and don't eat. And fyi.. if an animal is starving, it will eat whatever you give it!

For sure the QAWS will help coz before I also found a dog before and I actually brought him directly to QAWS, policemen are treating these strayed dogs so mean,,,,as I can see this dog looks so lovable,,,,if only i'm living in a villa I really love to have a dog but unfortunately, I'm in a flat......

Unfortunately here, culturally many fear and loathe dogs and will take any opportunity to literally have them put down (another neighbour has a very tiny dog which is regularly targetted with swift kicks from other unkind neighbours due to their religious views - like a tiny dog could hurt anyone)

AND as to cats, they just could not care less. people forget what Ghandi said about animals - "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."

The dog is currently with the guards of Tebah - he was the one who found it, and I guess he didn't know what else to do other than call the police.

I have contacted Dogs in Doha and QAWS and I'm working with friends to try and get him homed/reunited before the police arrive. We have told the guard not to let the police have it as we're working to get him a good home, but we'll see what happens.

We've taken him (it's a boy) to the vet this morning - he's not chipped (ANIMAL OWNERS PLEASE CHIP YOUR PETS!) but otherwise a very good natured animal.

Rizkz - as you can see, we brought it food and it's tucked in!

Tinkerbell - absolutely not, a neighbour friend of mine (who also happens to speak Arabic) regularly takes his dog to the corniche (on a lead of course). He has had several run ins with the police who said if he catches him and his dog there again, he will arrest my friend, confiscate the dog and have it put down due to his perception that the dog is a threat to people. Be it said, I have known this dog for the last few years and it is the sweetest tempered dog imaginable.

And by the way on our compound, they regularly round up the cats and have them destroyed (the municipality that is) regadless if the cat has a collar on or not - and you can't say that they are a threat to life.

traffic dept. should deploy thai nationals for kinda search operations, eating dogs is better than killing them ;b
