The Flashing Lights in my Rear View Mirror

Dracula
By Dracula

The sight of neon lights flashing in the car's rear view mirror is enough to make even the strongest of stomachs queasy.
The "White-Land-Cruisers" on streets confuse me!!
Image and video hosting by TinyPic
I sometimes see flashing lights in my rear view mirror, maybe 1/2 a mile away, and I dont know what to do.
No one else around me is pulling over, and I dont want to cause an accident by swerving through 2 lanes of traffic.
I look again after a minute and the flashing lights are further away than before.
Apparently, the "White-Land-Cruisers" dont travel more than the speed limit...just 140-160 km/h...:)..., whereas everyone else does...:P
So, I would guess on the street, if everyone started pulling over for an "White-Land-Cruiser", that might create a bigger congestion, which isnt good .
OTH, the rule book says that you are supposed to stop on the shoulder when you see an "White-Land-Cruiser" behind you.

I end up doing what everyone else does; ie; keep driving

You are right. What if someone gets hurt? I am sure that is on the minds of those who are speeding and don’t give a dam anyone else’s safety on the road. The land cruiser I greeted was actually flashing at me in the right lane because the car in the left lane was passing me at that moment. He made his point. I made mine. The only way these people respect anything is when they know their actions will hurt them more than others. Not out of common decency and respect for others. Rather go to jail for a few years and be alive than killed by some idiot trying to grow a d_ _k on the road

I have also wanted to attach high output lights for retaliatory purposes but I though it out and figured if someone got hurt it would be jail time for sure. I have looked in some vehicle's owner's manuals while in Saudi and they show the high beam lever as the "passing lever".

Check your manuals and see what yours is described as.

After reading all the comments I tried a little experiment. I rigged up two aircraft landing lights under the rear bumper of my wife`s Jimny. Took a ride to Al Khor and sure as hell flashing lights in the rear view mirror. As our superhero in the big Landcruiser got closer flashing like mad, I decided to greet him back. Flick of the switch and voila!! He did not want to communicate in Morse code anymore. Maybe he was stuck for words. Word of advice carry extra batteries!!

My attitude? those who drive like mad and flsh others are the ones with an attitude.I am a disciplined and careful driver. This is the usual case one who loves to do something bad or loves something bad blames one who talks against it as having an attitude.

So you are saying that the one who flashes hi lights at others, tailgates and beeps others to get out of the way does not have an attitude.

What i hate is the tail gating and they flash you expecting you to move out.My policy is don't break the speed limit and if I am driving withing the speed limit in the left lane I am in the rigth.Left lane is not to break the speed limit as many drivers here think.(Left lane is for rally.) The worst is that every KM or so you get a traffic light or round about. Now what is the point of these drivers rallying and flashing you to get out of the way only to go and stop at a red light a few hundred metres down. Its pathetic. I mean this type of thing is for the Dammam /riyadh highway where you have kilometeres of highway non stop, not on the road of Doha. What I hate also is when they beep you at the lights as soon as the lights change.Even before it is green. Often you have cars from the opposite direction jumping red lights so when you have green and he just got red and he carries on, you will have an accident if you don't allow him through first. Some idiots don't care light change, go get your self killed no problem as long as he moves. Pathetic

1.its not his neither and he can use another lane he does have his foot glued to the accelerator that he cannot slow down and overtake. The left lane is not a rally lane.

2.Speed is not by natinality but there is an anttitude and mentality and and discipline.

3.The one behind too should show Kindness as it is is not a one way thing only the one in front has to cowtow while the other plays rally on the road. There are others using the road, motorists and pedestrians. those who like to rally should leave this for the large motorways and the desert.Too many lives being lost by the carelessnees of those who think they own the road and others should clear out for them.

4.Does racing on the road andn putting other drivers lives in danger form part of culture. Your, their, country or mine, does not give anyone the right to drive carelessly , look at all the road signs trying to educate the people against what they are doing. If really it was Culture the police and trfic department would not do anything about it after all they have to preserve their culture and the culture of these people is to be decent on kind.

By the way what culture? These people have only started driving cars about 30- 40 years back so how can tail- gating and flashing lights at other drivers be part of Culture

This is what I do now to the pig headed Toyota drivers in Doha.

When they come up behind you and flash there light, I just slow down more, then when they are only inches from my back I turn on my window washers and wash my front windscreen, the water sprays all over their car,, they hate it and back right off and change lanes to go around you. The locals hate getting their car dirty, it works every time.

And I totally agree with skinniestfatman The locals will call the police, and yes you will get in big shit fight with police. But not all expats know this law, get there number plate and report it to the police, they will have the same done to them, and intact jail,

I agree with The Jam, flock with me and see what happens, cowards. Small penises and big cars. We must be in the middle east.

And as for ajjuizcool Piss Poor Planning on their part does not constitute an emergency on our part. Ban them from the roads. One guy said to me he was 40 minutes late for a meeting, Flock him, stupid driver

I read ur incident, and let me tell u, even though the other party was 100% at fault, you shouldn't have done any gestures to him (as there's a law in this country concerning "middle finger" and such gestures). It happened to me before (guy doing it to me, and I had 4people in my car as witnesses, and we got him in sh!t load of troubles...

Just drive safe and avoid the idiots. At the end, 1minute of impatience is not worth all the hassle... Trust me, back in my country (Bosnia), one guy got shoot with an AK47 for giving the mid finger to another guy (sad... but you see the result of such bigotry?)

I had an incident just the other night while riding as a passenger with my girlfriend. On a surprisingly empty 3 lane road .. we were flashed. Over and over, etc. finally the driver overtook our lane and slowed rapidly to a near stop. When we passed his vehicle I made an obscene gesture. My GF was so preoccupied with avoiding this clown that we missed our direction and had to U turn.

Long story short - we were followed for a very long way.

Finally stopped in a busy area to confront situation, and the driver blocked us in. I got out of car to talk and he wouldn't get off his mobile phone.

He called police - turns out he was an off duty cop, they haul me away under charges of obscene gesture and assault. The assault was a total lie - he claimed I hit him repeatedly. Police liked his story, I got hauled to the nearest dank holding cell and faced the prosecutor in the morning.

I was eventually subject to pay a fine.

What I wouldn't give to curbstomp that driver, and the useless swine that call themselves police.

few comments regarding your points if you don't mind:

1) we all would love to "OPEN THE WAY" , it's not our road as you have said,so why don't you use the "another lane" ?

2) you are speeding for fun? please !!! enough death counts because of speed

3) I agree with you

4) I totally agree am against stereotyping, however this a multicultural society, but when it comes to traffic law,we all obey the law which states clearly the speed limit of the road.

I hope my comments weren't harsh, I drive on the right lane most of the times, but there are few times where i find someone on my tail asking "OPEN THE WAY" but it's either a 300 m from traffic/roundabout or the second lane is very busy !

all am asking for is some logical driving, looking at the statistics of car accidents does confirm the fact that we do have major issue when it comes to driving !

Well I drive one of the biggest wheels u can see on road (even bigger than Hummer H2) (Dodge ram 3500HD), and even though I would be driving on the fast lane with at least 10-20km/hr less than the max speed, no1 ever flashes me while driving the dodge; they simply stay behind or overtakes from the right.

But when I switch to our other cars (honda city or mazda rx), then its a total mess: People will flash me all the time, I usually move away (if that's possible or simply stay in my lane and ignore it)... It's funny that such street arrogance predominates in this country.... Back where I'm from, such behavior would be settled with blood (no kidding)

Weather emergency or not, weather Qatari or not (HAGAER this is not about nationality), and for whatever reason...

1. If someone behind your car and speeding, OPEN THE WAY, even if you are doing speed limits it’s not your road and there is always another lane you can use.

2. If someone behind your car and speeding, OPEN THE WAY, even if they had no reason and doing it for fun (as me) by the way speed is not by nationality.

3. If the car behind you old or new, expensive or cheap, open the way and have some morals and kindness towards others.

4. Stop hanging everything you don’t like or –ve experience you have on locals!! And respect that they have a culture that might suit you or not, remember your culture doesn’t suit them as well! Remember that you are on their country and not yours! So adapt as other visit your country adapt to your country rules too.

I'm moving on the other lane too if I can whenever there's a speeding car at my back but if I can't I'm hitting my hazard button to signal that I can't change my lane and what he is doing is dangerous.

to all the above comments regarding emergency cases, yes you are right, but how much is the percentage of speedy drivers who are speeding because of an emergency versus. speeding for the sake of speed and killing others!

I have a few logical point:

1. there are people who are flashing me when am 300 m away from the roundabout, what is your logic here? wait 10 sec and i will let fly away after we pass the roundabout

2. second group , they like to flash you when they see clearly you are doing the speed limit of the road ,there are plenty of trucks on the right lane and it's a 2 lane road, one is full of trucks and second lane which i am on already according to the road's speed limit.

3. third group, they flash you and stick their grill into your back, though you are indicating right, but you are waiting for spot on the right lane so you can move, but they continue to stick their bonnet into the back of your car "like hey am gonna do you soon"

4. fourth group, the traffic is completely jammed,if you check the horizon ,you can see clearly that there is no single car that is able to move, full jam,but the idiot behind you continues to flash you like if he/she is able to flyover every single car and most of them end up causing a chain of accidents

so please don't come here lecturing us about emergencies, true we all like to drive fast and we all like to get home fast, but due to traffic whether you doing 80 or 160,believe me am gonna catch you in the next roundabout due to traffic!

please drive according to the limit and get home safe.

Somehow I think it unlikely that all, most or even a significant percentage of the "flashers" are trying to get somewhere fast for an "emergency". Being in a hurry or being late is no excuse for driving over the speed limit. Mostly it's young Qatari males who are impatient (at least that's been my experience). Or perhaps they feel the need to demonstrate ther "manhood." Despite my notion to slow down when some one flashes me, or perhaps wave to them (but not use all of my fingers), I generally just get out of the way, I don't need to risk getting into an accident. Frequently, however, they are flashing when there is traffic in both lanes and traffic ahead. Where do they expect the person they are flashing to go? Bottom line: the flashers are (1) being rude and (2) driving dangerously. It's one thing to endanger yourself, another to endanger others.

SAME TOPIC AS BEFORE AND GETS SAME COMMENT...Move from the way and OPEN it for others!!

By the way...I have an EXPENSIVE CAR and WHEN a 1960 car behind me needs away i OPEN THE WAY for HIM BY MY self..CONSIDERING THE ROAD IS NOT MINE!!!

I wonder why some people waite until someone to flash for them so they understand that they have to move!

I drive daily inside Doha and from Ras Laffan too..And lately i notice some people wont move if you where not rude to them or treat them in bad way!! LEFT LINE IS CALLED HIGH SPEED LINE...WEATHER U LIKE IT OR NOT!!

they refuse to move forgetting that sometimes the car behind them might be speeding for an emergency! or late for somthing or for a reason sometimes!! but yet some people ALWAYS LOVE FEELING THEY ARE LOW AND BEING TREATED THAT WAY...SO THEY REFUSE TO MOVE TO ANY CAR UNTILE ITS AN EXPENSIVE CAR....i think that what i call brain problems and even no brain sometimes..

I HOPE ALL WILL LEARN...THAT THE ROAD IS OWNED BY THE GOV and BELONGS TO ALL..so when u see someone behind u..MOVE IT TO THE OTHER LINE OR JUST SPEED THEN!!AND YES THEY DESERVE BEING RUDE TO THEM... I ENJOY IT SINCE ALOT OUT THERE NOW...

about this flashing of lights... but it was just all loud talking and eventually when the signal hit green in the roundabout both went to their cars and separate ways. exactly thats an FJ and not land cruiser.

Yesterday, there was an accident near Ras Abu Aboud involving big car and European driver. So, its just that if they are behind big wheels, they think they rule the road and everyone should give them clear way. Its not about Nationality but about big cars, i have seen worst white drivers than Qataris, they give a run for the money even to the locals the way they drive as they know if caught/stopped by police, nothing will happen.

Police should install more security cameras around doha roads and monitor movements on the road from remote location rather than just signal cameras where everybody obeys the rule.
