Flashing hazard lights
Plz plz plz can anybody tell me why people drive with hazards flashing when it is misty in Qatar. I come from a country where we have bad weather and it even snows and that is not practiced there.
An announcement was even made on QBS this morning that drivers should turn them off as they are of no use and it is confusing, drivers here don't use the flicker lights (Indicators) when they turn and that is strange but true. If it was an international acclaimed law or rule why is it that only certain people do it????????????Is it a case of monkey see monkey do.......
I understand. Thanks, Sugardady.
I always drive in my owen box.:)
And.."It is like when the Camel fell every one will come up with a blead to take his share. That doesnot mean the man is a Camel.'HUH???
@ onlineflame,it's just a saying mate, don't take it literally,it's just that amongst a bunch of monkeys,if one does something, the others or most of the others will do the same...if it were the same for say cats,it would be "cat see,cat do" right?...it doesn't imply that the people doing it are monkeys, don't take offence my friend...
There was no reason for adding the saying about monkeys. Be careful of what you say "spybot".
YUP ITS TRUE AS SIMPLE AS THAT
and who said that driving was always proper in Qatar?
sorry. . .what i meant was fog lights. . .low beam of course. . .
sometimes even in Doha, I use hazard lights but if ever I will turn left or right or just changing lane, I turn-off the hazard and use my indicators! Now, not many are use to it, well, practice makes perfect!

"Why is my PM access blocked?"
i rather see people using hazzard lights during foggy day/night while driving. . .rather than not see them at all (don't know if they know how to switch their high beams. . .maybe that is the reason for using hazzard lights for them). . .
although I use only high beams of course =)
I see many drivers change lanes with their hazards lights on.
One has to use the indicators when changing lanes to indicate the intention. If both indicators are 'blinking' it is confusing.
because you need to turn left or right anytime but if you are in a straight road wherein the only way out is truning right (to take the interchange), no harm in turning on your hazard lights.
It's my choice to continue driving but if you chose to stop, I respect your move. It's my choice to drive defensively so I want my hazard lights open on that area!

"Why is my PM access blocked?"
Sugardaddy, I always try to give enough distance between me and the car in front.
I have no control to the car behind me though, that's way I want to make sure he sees me if I stop for whatever reason.
So why do police have flashing lights then if not to draw attention to the fact that they are there???
If I'd stopped on the side of the road, I might still be there... along with everyone else!
if the foggy condition is really bad, pull over to the side and then switch on your hazard light, but dont drive with your hazard lights on cause it confuses other drivers.
I just had one hell of a hairy drive back from Doha to Dukhan- the flashing hazards were the only way to see other cars!
I'm just wondering what took the police so long to come along with their disco lights.. the road was clear after Shahanya (sp? sorry!) The fog had obviously been that dense for a while if the train of cars coming into town from Dukhan end was anything to go by?
Anyway, it was a freaky old drive at 20km an hour.. even the Lancruisers kept to a temperate 40 ish... was half thinking of flagging one again as an escort:)
LOL. please ask qatar traffic department if they would agree on that
it's popularly known as low and high beam positions (for headlights). I think the issue here is not the car following you but the car you are following! For me, I would rather see a car in front of me with flashing hazard light during heavy fog specially those with defective and not-so-noticeable tail lights!

DS here from google search (sorry for cut and paste) .... cheers
Dipped beam (low beam, passing beam, meeting beam)
Dipped-beam (also called low, passing, or meeting beam) headlamps provide a light distribution to give adequate forward and lateral illumination without blinding other road users with excessive glare. This beam is specified for use whenever other vehicles are present ahead. The international ECE Regulations for headlamps specify a beam with a sharp, asymmetric cutoff preventing significant amounts of light from being cast into the eyes of drivers of preceding or oncoming cars.[3][4] Control of glare is less strict in the North American SAE beam standard contained in FMVSS / CMVSS 108.[5] ..........(see also fog light)
and what is dipping light? Sorry, I'm not simple!
***********************************************
"Why is my PM access blocked?"
Nope. Hazard lights are used only for stopping. Use dipping lights in fog. Its that simple.
It is not because they want to see better. It is because they want TO BE SEEN in foggy or heavy rain condition.
If I have to stop suddenly where visibility is limited, I instingtively will reach for the hazzard just to increase the possibility that the driver behind will see me until I move forward again..
BTW it is widely practiced in several Asian countries ,mine included, so it is not exactly monkey see monkey do (unless you want to imply something....)
cheers
SK
I drive everyday from Doha to Dukhan and usually turn on my flasher from Shahaniya to Dukhan where the possibility of you turning left or right is very minimal. And it's hard to drive 100 to 120 speed if it's not turn on. And it's common to see vehicles with small tail light, so for me, on this straight stretch of the highway, flashing hazard lights is advantageous specially in heavy fog!

AbuSaif ...good suggestions...too
- Most of the drivers don’t know that the strips on the back and some on the front screen (defogger) are to keep the visibility clear during foggy or humid weather conditions... They just keep asking kids to wipe the back screen.
- Further most of the drivers also don't know the heat blow defogger for the front screen and side glasses for similar weather conditions... they just use the right hand while holding the steering wheel with the left while driving...
-No use of indicator while turning as pointed out by many...too much use of headlight flasher.... while tailgating.
- Driving full beam on highway (bothering the front distant cars and as well coming from opposite side)
The vehicles equipped with fog rear lights are used 24x7 which kills the visibility of most of the driver at night during normal weather conditions.
-Kids on the front seat less than 10 and or to disengage the front airbag if the toddler is seated in front with or without the safety seat under circumstance.
- Furthermore, the sand tires on the road on a high center of gravity vehicle and generally driving fast
We can keep adding the list to no limits when it comes to ignorance….
What we should think now is that how best we can assist in removing this state of ignorance.
In this regard, if I may propose the followings basic and immediate step.
To draft the indicated points and many more on a colorful flyer, to add pictures if possible and translate it to most common 5 languages (Arabic, English Malayalam, Tamil, Urdu) and distribute it on most common junctions.
And or get this information written in easy language and to be send via txt message courtesy QTEL or Vodafone..
Hope if we get together on this, I am sure the light shall overcome the darkness…
Your improved suggestions are welcomed
Wish you all a safe trip/journey always
Peace
You ppl are rite. 2 Days before i met an accident because of this same reason, Flashing lights are bit confusing us now a days. Traffic Dept. should make a awareness programs on this issue.
Well yeah them using both the indicators is less worrying then them just using the wrong one. It always makes my heart skip a beat when they put the right indicator and then decide to take a left right in front of me.
Ah the joys of driving in Qatar. CBS... lets not go there. The radio is officially dead here.
LoL DaRuDe....
Listening QBS early in the morning or anytime in the day is like killing urself slowly slolwy....:(
in the morning are you kiddin me. i better go bang my car then.
@ s_isale,very valid point! LOL!
Who listens to QBS
"means that they also get to use the left and right indicators at the same time thus eliminating any need to use them at any other time until it's foggy again"
I was a little confused with so many vehicles doing that today morning. I just turned on my headlights to increase visibility. People here don't really know when to use hazard lights or when to use indicators or what to do at a roundabout even.
Ignorance-pure and simple. The drivers who use hazard lights in the fog think they're doing a public service by warning other drivers that they're on the road.Plus what else are the hazard lights for!!!( Sarcasm intended)
and it means that they also get to use the left and right indicators at the same time thus eliminating any need to use them at any other time until it's foggy again.
Ahh- life in Doha!
>
May your dreams take you travelling all through your life.
Its become a habit here. They think that it forms a protective shield around their car and they can't be hurt.
hazard light should be used only when the vehicle is stationary and not moving...
♣practice makes perfect, but nobody's perfect... so why practice? duh?! ☺ ♣
coz no one here listen to QBS channel tatz the reason why, i think ?
@ spybot,it's monkey see monkey do mate!!!
