A white South African farmer who fed the body of one of his former workers to a pride of lions has been released on parole after serving just three years in prison, triggering cries of outrage.

Mark Scott-Crossley had originally been convicted of murdering Nelson Chisale, who he had sacked from his farm in Limpopo province. When Mr Chisale returned to the premises in 2004 to collect some belongings he was beaten, tied up, and thrown into a lion breeding enclosure.

Only his skull, a finger, and some pieces of leg were recovered, and the high-profile case demonstrated continuing racial tensions in rural South Africa, even a decade after the end of apartheid.

Scott-Crossley was originally sentenced to life imprisonment, but on appeal last year a conviction for being an accessory and a five-year term were substituted, on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to prove Mr Chisale was alive when he was thrown to the lions, making him eligible for parole.

In a statement the north-west region of South Africa's trade union federation Cosatu said: "It is clear that those who are rich and white will continue to be treated differently to those who are poor."

The Young Communist League described Scott-Crossley as a "monstrous killer", adding: "We respect the rule of law, but it is disgusting that there is a continued tendency or a systematic abortion of justice on matters related to the murder of black workers in the country.

"This reinforces our long-held belief that the rule of law in this country favours the rich, particularly whites, and regards the lives of black workers as shallow and cheap."

No IMO, the particular incident has nothing to do with skin. The poor guy asked for his money or belongings and the powerful lord got angry as poor chap must have some balls to ask such a heartless MASTER for his right.

Its all about showing to keep the others tame and knowing that if you have money and power, you can get by anything.

I think the outcome might be different is the poor man was not black.

Are you saying that he was fed to the lions because he was poor and not because he was black ?

but as 666 said - money talks no matter your skin color. As up till 2 weeks ago, the rich blacks were unaware there's poor whites living in the same conditions as poor blacks!

Anything is possible in countries where money talks.

To some extent, for example in Zambia or SA, skin colour also matters but money is always first .......................
