....
There are a total of 14 nationalities represented in this year’s list, working in 13 sectors across the six GCC states. There are more US nationals [see pics] than any other on the list – Americans account for 12 of the entrants. India has 10 entrants [pics] while the UK [pics] has nine entries in the list.

A bit crudely put carlosmarx, but you have a point. By historical definitions of imperialism, Qatar has frightening similarities to the "independent" hold-out principalities of 19th and 20th century India under the raj.

Qatar, like much of the Gulf, is an Anglo-American colony by another name. The dominant language is English, the defense is provided by the USA, the majority of top executives are Western (mostly native English speakers from USA, North America, Australia, Britain), the best universities here are American, the road system is an Anglo-American hybrid, the country's economy is based on Western companies extracting natural resources for their own economies (for which they effectively pay a licensing fee). Let's be honest about who is really in charge here.

This is classic Western Imperialism. The only difference is that England and America aren't "formally" claiming the place by coloring it pink on the map.

agree nicaq...

arabs money, expats talent indeed.

whether we like it or not, that's the reality. these people keep working to raise money for their "employers". yes, their on the top positions of their companies, but still somebody behind them can always say no or yes or even dictate them of what they're supposed to do. this is my opinion.

it is actually quite surprising to be honest... I assume US expats would take pretty high positions (well, I haven't met any US waiters or cleaners)... considering the history of US - Middle East relationships... they let their 'enemy' run their country????? ;o)
