Ethiopia severs ties with Qatar

The rebellion in the Ogaden is a sensitive issue for Ethiopia

Ethiopia's government has announced it is breaking off relations with Qatar.

The Foreign Ministry said it was because of "Qatar's attempts to destabilise the sub-region and its hostility towards Ethiopia itself".

Ethiopia is thought to be angry at recent coverage from Al-Jazeera, based in Doha, and financial support given to Eritrea, accused of backing rebels.

Although the two countries have diplomatic relations, neither has an embassy in the other's capital.

The Foreign Ministry statement accuses Qatar of being blinded by arrogance and remaining deaf to all Ethiopia's attempts to persuade it to change its ways.

According to the BBC's Elizabeth Blunt in Addis Ababa, Foreign Ministry sources say that the Ethiopian government believes Qatar is giving substantial sums of money - amounting to something like $150,000 a month - to Eritrea, which then go on to fund insurgents in Ethiopia's Somali region, the Ogaden National Liberation Front.

A reference in the statement to the output of Qatar's media outlets points the finger at the international television channel Al-Jazeera, which is based in Qatar, she says.

Al-Jazeera recently broadcast a series of reports from the Ogaden, to which the Ethiopian government took great exception, describing

I still dont' understand WHY.

Is it just some trantrum throwing because of Al Jazeera?

the horn of africa with instability in Somalia is creating a black hole.....

We should care because if it gets worse then the reprecussions with it being out of the 'global fold' could effect us never mind the people living there.

The UN etc have poured huge amount of resources in trying to stabalise the Eritrea/Ethiopia conflict... to little avail

PS Asmara, the capital of Eritrea is one of the most beautiful cities on earth...

They're basically doing this because Qatar refused to throw out the US base here.

the Ogaden region is generally considered to be a part of greater somalia. they speak the same language and share the same religion. i support Qatari assistance of Eritrea and the Ogaden people. as Ethiopia is playing games it shouldn't be. Especially in Somalia.

I do! and a lot of the horn of Africa cares and Kenya because it destabalises the region.

But I agree with you...that is why I want to slap them with a flip flop

Now I have been to Ethiopia and Eritrea.... their animosity runs deep.

Two points:

a) I would like to get a flip flop and slap both presidents with it for their bad tempered tantrum throwing.

b) What about all the Ethiopians working here.... how selfish! If they have a sponsor issue who do they turn to? They are so vunerable.....

These politicians have put their citizens in a very vunerable position.
