Egypt or Cuba what do you think?

My beautiful daughter (yes I am both shallow and proud) has asked me to take her on  a one week vacation in April. She has selected Cuba and Egypt as places she would like to visit. I have been to both places but she has been to neither and I was both younger and single when I was last in either place.

I am tempted towards Cuba (even though the food is awful) because I remember it being a lot of fun and the people are wonderful. Getting there though is a pain especially if you have a US passport. However, my daughter is 11 years old and I am a little older and I think we would have a lot of fun there.

Egypt on the other hand is also amazing with all its wonderful history. Is 11 too young to appreciate the valley of the Kings and Queens, a Nile cruise and a turn around the pyramids?

What do you think would be better for a one week father and daughter vacation?

I think you ought to go to Egypt for the history and the fun family things you could do together. You can make it both educational and FUN. You could do camel rides around the pyramids, the nile cruise (with stops at the temples) and maybe end at Luxor and do a hot-air balloon ride there with her and visit VOK. She'd love it! At Cairo, I think there's a Pharaonic Village of some sort which is quite kitsch, but fun for the kids. You could definitely do loads with your daughter in one week in Egypt (but mind the hygiene and tourist scams).

but it is out of my hands. The Caymans are not a new experience for either of us as my brother and his family live there and we always spend Christmas with them.

The French connection is limiting my options.

My gmail account has informed this morning that the ruler of my world, the breaker of my finances and the one who calls all the shots has determined that myself and daughter are not going to Cuba or Egypt.

According to her Frenchness, the one who knows best, both Cuba and Egypt are too dangerous for an 11 year old girl. Instead, we are going to the Cayman Islands. Could be worse I guess.

Belize is funky cultural with beaches and pyramids and jungle and rum 4 u!

u could still do Cuba by flying from Cancun.

I took my mum to Egypt for a week (my second visit) great sucess.... 1 week Luxor 4 * hotel rtn Manchester 171 quid each.... can't say better than that.

Yeah she would dig Egypt but she is also a Disney girl. I, on the other hand am not a Disney guy.

I am now veering towards Egypt but will probably let her flip a coin and decide.

Mila - R123's daughter doesn't strike me as a disney girl.... :)

Cuba is fine and dandy - Why not a week in Cuba and a week in the Yucatan.... loads of pyramids and traditional culture in the Yucatan -

Chichen is the biggest pyramid ever!

Egypt

R - go to a nice hotel in Luxor go out and about.......and maybe a few days in Cairo......

you could do everything from Souq shopping - to a belly dancing class...

I think she would find it very mentally stimulating to see Egypt which i gather is what your daughter would thrive on.

Cuba Richard, for sure, who knows how long it will stay the way it is now that Castro's gone.  She might only have a bit of time to experience the REAL Cuba./

I hate Disney. Leah has been to Disney in LA, Orlando and Paris. I hope I never see Mickey Mouse again.

Hong Kong though is a great place. It has taken a long time to distill the choices doen to Cuba and Egypt. It is easy for me to get to Egypt and it is easy for Leah to get to Cuba

Am I that transparent and easy to read? You are right of course, there is absolutely nothing to buy in Cuba whereas I can see myself being dragged around the big Souk for days.

But seriously folks, Cuba is not dangerous and Havana is a beautiful if crumbling city with plenty to see. Also, remember, Cuba as we know it will not be around for much longer. Fidel has retired and Raul is no spring chicken. How much longer until Cuba gets flooded with American money and a Mc Donalds springs up on every block?

Dont u think its bit risky then going with ur kiddo? Its adventurous provided everything goes well. U goin with a 11 year old. Just take care cause she is kiddo right?

I have been to Eqypt three times and I still want to go back. Part of the attraction of Cuba is that the United States does not allow Americans to travel to Cuba. Therefore there is a little kudos and you sound pretty adventurous if you can tell your fellow 6th graders that you went to Cuba on vacation.

You bet I do. Also the music, the salsa, the girls, the beaches the Cuba Libres. Also, I love the way the Cubans have a good laugh at the dark blue passport, they smile and hand it back to you unstamped.

I wonder if the colourful life in Cuba may be wasted on an 11 year old.  If I was 11 again I think I would have learned lots from seeing the Pyramids, the Nile and all the archiological sites that Egypt (probably) has to offer.  Very romantic history, in the sense of Egyptian Mummies, curses of the tombs and all that. Not to mention the general day culture.

I don't know much about Cuba, but would imagine your daughter (as an American citizen) may already know about that country and lives close enough to visit it another time.  i.e. it's nearer to her home than Egypt is! :D

Unless you ENJOY an overcrowded, hot, sewage running in the streets kind of vacation.

I'm sorry to all my Egyptian friends....the country has GREAT history, but I would not go back there if it was FREE (until some improvements are made). But that's just my opinion.

Stay safe all.
