Drunk accused of having sex in Dubai taxi

DUBAI: An Irish man and a 27-year-old British woman are being questioned by prosecutors in Dubai for allegedly having sex in the back of a taxi while they were both drunk, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Thursday.

The Irish man, C.M., claimed the British woman, R.B., was his fiancée. The pair have strongly denied the alleged charges of public indecency, consensual sex and liquor consumption.

"C.M. and R.B. were boozed up when they were reported to a nearby police patrol that they indulged in sexual activity in the taxi's rear seat in an area close to Dubai Marina," Gulf News reported citing a source.

"According to primary police interrogations, the arresting police officer alleged that the woman was not wearing a shirt when he arrested the couple.

"Meanwhile C.M. countered those claims, according to his statement, contending that R.B. is his fiancée and that she was sad when he hugged her only," the report added.

The prosecutor will hear the statements of the driver who reported the incident on May 30

"We are still waiting for forensic reports to prove whether the couple had sex or indulged in any form of sexual activity," the paper quoted a prosecution source as saying.

The suspects were released on bail after being held for five days at the Jebel Ali police station, the report said

Going by the posts elsewhere on QL it apepars they can have sex anywhere whether it is inside, outside, on the roof, below the cab, hanging on the door, in the boot, etc etc etc...:)

If you are caught having sex in public then it is possible that you will be charged with a criminal offence. The law and the punishment evoked as a result of breaking it will largely depend on the circumstances in which you are caught having sex. Whilst it is understandable that people can get carried away in the moment, it is also reasonable that there must be some kind of law protecting people, and particularly children, from witnessing such sexual acts.

There are several possible pieces of law that can be breached by having sex in public: notably The Sexual Offences Act, outraging public decency, and the Public Order Act. Common to all these laws is that is must be witnessed, or have been able to be witnessed, by somebody else. Apart from the obvious fact that it will be difficult to get caught if nobody has seen you having sex, the more pertinent point is that the law in this area is not designed to restrict two people having fun, but to protect people who may not want to witness it; therefore if nobody has witnessed the incident, nobody can have been caused any alarm and there is unlikely to be any punishment

It should be noted that these laws are in relation to England and Wales (with similar provisions in Scotland); if you go abroad, particularly to notoriously religious countries, these kinds of acts can result in far more severe punishments

A drunk Irishmen, and 27-year-old British woman in the back seat of a cab?

That had to have been the worst sex ever. I bet it barely even qualified as sex. I'd drop the charges if I were the prosecuter

And when you give people an all you can drink feast for real cheap, what do you expect will happen? The people were drunk, and obviously thus outta their minds. It's a good thing the drunk couple only had sex in the cab and didn't instead kill someone like say the cabbie!

but the offenders are just What?

Whatever the advertisement or promotions made by Dubai, did it ever promoted such actions?

Precisely the law of NO HARM NO FOUL. No one offended, no one will complain. No one is directly saying you can not do it, but just make sure you won't be caught!

We always say that there is no CLEAR CUT policy, so play SAFE! Why tripped the line of what is acceptable and what is not?

By snessy• 17 May 2012 15:57
snessy

Exactly FathimaH, this is prime example "The Irish Village, a hotel bar where patrons pay £10 a head for an all-you-can-drink brunch event" that's about 60 QAR, so what do you expect?? The UK is now doing their best to stop cheap drinks from being sold cheap to discourage binge drinking, perhaps UAE didn't get the same memo.

By FathimaH• 17 May 2012 15:52
FathimaH

I certainly don't support the actions of this couple, but I do know that the method in which certain countries promote themselves can send a very warped message out to people. And then when they are in actuality against those things they seem to be encouraging and/or hinting at, and harshly penalize those who are caught, it just makes them look bad.

The best part of Dubai or UAE is that alcohol is available freely, can get drunk until in trouble with the system. As per the law you are supposed to consume alcohol with permit only, but freely available without permit or even id check. Anyone can buy buy quantity specified from the duty free on arrival also. Ironically if caught by the system, you will be punished of consuming alcohol. That's why we had permit even though we dont buy from the licensed stores(always get from duty free which was almost half the price). The moment law enforcement comes into place, you are charged with consuming alcohol if you don't have a permit

So in west a person can get away with having sex in public so it's fine and acceptable. How abt third world country like Afghanistan where judicial system is weak and a person can get away with religious killing. Does that make religious killing acceptable?

By Hawk10• 17 May 2012 14:42

As per my experience, even the law is almost the same in most of the Middle East countries but no one will disturb you in Dubai until some body complains against you. When there is a complaint from a resident, off course the government has to take action according to the law. This is also the right of the citizens and residents that their complaints should be attended.....

Indecent exposure in the West is a slap on the wrist and a fine at worse. It's not jail time & deportation like here in the ME.

Which is why if you go for a walk on the beach in certain touristy areas like Ibiza, Benidorm, Magaluf, etc in the middle of the night you'll probably stumble across a few amorous couples.

Which is fine, because those places advertise themselves as the type of places you can do those things.

The problem with Dubai, is that it advertises itself as the type of place you can do this and then throws you in jail when you do it!

Precisely Fatima. The UAE (and even Qatar) can't keep playing this schizophrenic game of "we're open but we aren't" Either you're totally open, like the West and you support people's individual rights to say & wear what they like, or you don't.

Personally I don't care either way. Make me wear an abaya, don't make me wear an abaya. Let me drink in public, don't let me drink in public. Make up your bleeding minds already.

I mean, as much as I disagree with Frances burkha ban, at least they're being clear about it, instead of wishy washy like the ME!

And for all those people not wanting expats dressing "immodestly" just take a look at all the well known designer and high street shops. The most skimpiest of skimpy clothes worn by models are plastered all over the place and being sold. Surely, you don't expect ALL women who buy them to wear it "for his eyes only" and not out in public?

The truth is you can't have it both ways and any attempts to do so may very well end in disaster, with the countries in question losing much credibility!

By Miss Mimi• 17 May 2012 14:12

The UAE is positively schizophrenic Fatima. It doesn't know what it wants.
