Donations- work camp drop off point. UPDATE!!

Scarlett
By Scarlett

Alright QLers...everyone's been asking where to drop off donations...

UPDATE!!! Ok..drove by the showroom and there is a car park DIRECTLY next to the dealership that has plenty of parking and room. So...will try and park there, right by the road so you guys can see us.Sorry for the late notice, but hate to disturb the Merc Dealership business...)

Car Park BY the Mercedes showroom on Salwa Rd.
Wednesday, 30/4/08
6:30 PM until 8:30 PM (or 18:30 to 20:30 for those of you with military time)

Speed's mobile number - 660 4594

I only have one small car, so will need people who have SUVs or trucks to help store and transport the items, also. Anyone who wishes to help at the donation point will also be extremely welcome!!

Thank you in advance for all your help and hope to see your shining faces this Wed...

It was amazing to see what could be set up in a couple of days and how much stuff came together to help those poor workers.

However, not to dampen spirits richmand does have valid points

1. Do not distribute any donation or stuff unless managements or workers ask for help

2. If you really wants to help there is thousands of other workers seeking help ( low paid workers, long time not been paid salary, living in poor condition with out health care facility, not provided RP by company , waiting their sponsor in the Doha airport since 3 /4 days) lets say abandoned.

3. Be sure don’t do any thing which will be punishable for you and other well wisher by Qatar Labor law.

4. Think twice doing anything before.

Qatar Charity has a monopol concerning charitable events going on in Qatar, if they don't like what is happening there can be repercussions, especially accepting money which is forbidden.

Point two of his post is very true, and many labourers are living/abandoned in camps with no water and electricity so they do need help, I know, I have seen this and there are other groups doing some work for this but still not enough. These people we can still help if there still clothes/ food donations and resources available.

Once again ... Thank you very much for all your support and efforts ! It was a great success .. i saw tears in the eyes of Labourers, i asked one of them why is he in tears !

He said "These are tears of happiness and we can't believe that God has blessed us with so many kind hearted people"

On behlaf of QL I would like to say "Thank You" to the Management of HBK for their full support in this charity casue !

GREAT JOB QLERS !! KEEP IT UP ... GOD BLESS YOU ALL !

So, SPEED...if you're reading this...do inform when and where we could drop off some more. i still got a box or two of clothings.

Thanks to Speed, PWB, Scarlet, Khanan, Alexa, Novita, Honey, Thexonic, TCOM, Formatted Soul, Maxmo, Stunning Star, Ksarat, Tigasin321, Owen, King Edshel, and am sorry if I forget some names as I am sure after I left more people are coming with more stuff.

I guess HBK has to weigh what is better publicity for them - an accidental fire and the community reaching out to their workers or an accidental fire and them turning people away at the gates. Give me a break.

Dear speed, Scarlet and well wisher

Today morning i visit with ROTA representative HBK Power cleaning camp , we spoke with General Manager and Project coordinator , they show the all what happened and where happened and fired aria + he brief us about looses i got these point from them

1. Every things under controlled its small challenge for them.

2. Only 7 cabins were damaged by fire and there were 80 workers rooms was damaged only rest of room under controlled( or ok as usual)

3. Workers are already shifted to the safe camp and working as usual.

4. Only few workers cloths and others items burn .they already give money , cloths and food free since fired.

5. Financial controller is calculating that how much looses by fire even they are keeping record who loosed money and ornaments also.not only that they will give money as worker clamed .

6. They will not accept any help or charity individuals and organization because i wrote before its sheikh’s company not ordinary business man’s company.

7. They are very upset with what happening outside that because of fire some peoples are collecting money ,cloths and food stuffs

8. Managements and worker’s both did not ask for any help.

I humble suggest you guys,

1. Do not distribute any donation or stuff unless managements or workers ask for help

2. If you really wants to help there is thousands of other workers seeking help ( low paid workers, long time not been paid salary, living in poor condition with out health care facility, not provided RP by company , waiting their sponsor in the Doha airport since 3 /4 days) lets say abandoned .

3. Be sure don’t do any thing which will be punishable for you and other well wisher by Qatar Labor law

If you are like me and want to donate I suggest you do like I just did. I went to Rawnaq on a'port road and bought

27 toothbrushes

20 small packets of detergent

24 bars of soap

3 kettles

5 pairs of shoes

24 tea glasses

for a total of QR 241.- Not a lot of money, but I can't afford more right now.

So this is what I will donate and bring it tomorrow pm.

Speed/Scarlet

Seeing the various articles I bought it might be good to separate the items at collecting points. i.e. clothes from shoes. Household items from soaps etc. My car boot is quite full now and can imaging what it will look like at the collecting points. What happened to the offer from the guy working for the logistics company. Can he bring different boxes/containers so you can sort out the stuff? I could print up signs for the various items to be sorted. Just a suggestion ofcourse.

Also do you realize that the traffic at the Qatar Decoration roundabout, where Mercedes is on Salwa is murder at that time of the evening. That is the location for the evening pick-up no? I would recommend doing it under the shopping trolley both times.

Also I will help in the evening with the collections. Pls let me know.

Last but not least a message to all QLers. When you give, Allah will give you more in return!

Hi Speed,

Am a new member and would like to help the blaze victims.

(1) Do you still need people to help out at the Mercedes showroom on Wed night, 30/Apr? I would like to help.

(2) What about help on 1/May? What sort of help do you need?

(3) What items do you need now for the blaze victims. I can try to organize a donation drive (note, may not be able to gather all the stuff by 1/May though since it's already 29/Apr).

Let me know asap.

Thanks.

I understood the plan to be that we are taking the items directly to the burned out camp. It is not far from Mercedes - just across Salwa from KFC. The men are in two locations - the burned camp, where it is just disgusting, and a camp in the Industrial Area where, physically, it is a bit nicer. Both locations are in need of goods as the ones moved to the Industrial Area are the ones who lost all their belongings and the men in the burned camp are living in a burned out shanty town with no electric.

We will stick to our plans ! we are not concern about company at the moment ! Company is waiting for their chairman to come and give instructions ! WHEN ? don't know till then they are is miserable conditions !

Our concern is the Help them with our little efforts.

Richmand:

Yes we will continue to collect the donation on Thursday,, I like your idea but we are not prepared to celebrate May 1st. We 1st priority is to help needy people.

Again we are not helping HBK we are extending our help to their workers on humanitarian grounds ! I was there yesterday .. i wish you people go and see their living conditions after the fire !!

Anyhow, we will meet you guys on the following locations (as mentioned above):

The last fire - I did a lot of collecting, a lot of food and clothes and etc. etc. finally no one was allowed to bring it to the camp, and not only that but entry to everyone except the company employees was forbidden.

I still think we make packages and take food and water they will be more than thankful - they might even have more than they did before. If the camp is open it is easy.

Just a quick update.

I contacted this Luke John from HBK who gave me an odd response.

I told him that I was calling on behalf of some members from ILQ and QL and wanted to know if he has any plan or procedure for distributing the aid. However his reply was "We already have enough but if you want, you can come and meet them".

I replied with "should I tell all of the guys who're helping to just stop then because we're not needed?"

He replied with "You can come and check it out if you like. But just to let you know yesterday was their day off, today they're back at work so you can't see them except at night."

I kind of felt sorry for them...

What do you guys think? Should we all meet up at night rather than just giving stuff to HBK and letting them do what they want?

How can they have 'enough' donations?

Please read all, Labor day may 1st

And we will be the first group to help them ,,

Dear all QL Friends before doing anything if we think twice it will be better for all , I am not against to help worker we all are trying to do from the humanitarian ground but Qatar is a country where we can’t help from our bottom of heart , we can see the worker waiting for their sponsor/company more then 3 / 4 days in Doha airport , we see thousands of abandoned worker searching legally identification , we see thousands of worker not getting salary since more then 6 month, we see thousands of workers not fulfilling basic needs by company ( Resident permit on time ,water, electricity, healthcare )

I urge all QL friend this coming Thursday is Labor day ( may 1st ) why not we celebrate labor day some where and collect stuff and invite most of company needy labor and hand over to them all stuff , again I am not against to help HBK worker , I have also lot of stuff I can come with , meanwhile what are these Org doing ? Red cross societies , Qatar charity ( most of hospital, supermarket, hotel and other public place you will see their presentation to collect huge money)

Sorry for if any convenient its just my personnel opinion ..Happy Labor day !!!!

but problem with my timing is that I work at QAWS wednesdays and thursdays until about 5:30 or 6...and need time to get over to the drop off point. the place is very good as it is close to the labors camp, but the timings are kind of late ... I know that it is to let more people come and contribute but in my modest opinion, 1 hour is enough or up to 8:00 max.

Irregardless of what happened to those poor people, I think that they still have to wake up too early to go and work ..
