Doha Marriage Proposal Ideas

By art_029

Hi All!

Guys I need some help. I am a British Expat living in Doha. My girlfriend is here for the summer. She will be returning to the UK in a few weeks time. I want to marry her because I am sick & tired of the rules here for unmarried couples/visas/co-habiting etc. Besides I have been with her for more than a year now and the rules here have given me some reason for me to think about marriage. I know one thing for sure, I don't want the rules to be the reason for losing her.

I need some ideas for a memorable marriage proposal..cost is no object. You guys know Qatar better than I do..any romantic places etc? I'm doing it this thursday or friday night.

Hi guys.....yes the proposal has made an amazing change in our lives...we are so happy. Though my other half has had to return to the UK until June next year (to enable her to complete her masters):-( Though I am seeing her in Sept, then Oct, she's coming in Nov, I go Dec/Jan..then easter we have a blow-out wedding on a Polish mountain, then in August we'll have another in Mauritius. In someways, I am glad to see others happy for us, especially the older ones :-)

Hope you get your proposal soon!

My advice, go to the fish market. Get a live oyster. Wait till it dies, or have the person in the market slighty open its mouth. Put the ring in the oyster. Then take dhow trip, tell your gf that your going pearl diving. offcourse you need to get her all excited about pearl diving. Get her books, pics and tell how what a big part pearl diving played in qatar history. once she is excited enough head out to see.

leave the oyster in your pocket. plunge into the sea take the oyster out of your pocked.

come up acting like a little kid all excited that you have found an oyster, after many failed attempts. give her the pleasure to open the oyster. then she'll find the ring and see u in one knee.

this is so unique.

Make up your mind to let him know that 'romance' is neccessary in your life, otherwise he'll go 'bush' and stay that way. One day when you complain that he's not romantic enough, he'll say "well you never said anything when we first got together"...and it will be your fault.

MAKE IT PLAIN... that all big arrangements - as well as the little ones - need romantic ingredients if he wants to have a nice response from you. That's the way women are made. Washing dirty sox and undies may not entail romance, but engagement rings certainly do!

Believe me, you'll both be better off for learning this lesson early.

ps tell him sweetly!

My boyfriend just started talking about the idea of engagement and we decided to get engaged when we go home for a break. Does this mean I get no bubble and no romantic walk=( This really sucks. Hmmm... I think I have to make it clear that unless he gets on his knees and looks me in the eye like a homeless kitten it is not happening. Man he had it easy=(

The 'hole' is up the Salwa Road, and u take a right turn just after the large satelite dish on the left(30Kms perhaps out of doha). You're going to be heading towards the pylons on the right, although you will have to go along the right-turn road until you hit a cross road, then look for the old tumbledown house. (If you've taken the wrong right turning, you could find the house is east or west from where you met the junction, so drive for about 4/5 mins either way till you find it. Its only a one room affair, stands about 3 mts high, with broken down walls.

To the right of the house (away from Doha) there is a small bush about 6 foot tall... about 15 mtrs after the house, and there is a 'track' in front of the bush leading to the hole (500/700 mts away) which is now covered with a chicken wire fencing. Stay on the main tyre track.

If you don't have anyone to guide you, I'd suggest borrowing a GPS to get u home, as you can get lost in that area. Otherwise if you know how to read the sun and stars, and have plenty of food and water, you're OK. Your mobile should be well charged up, and carry a car charger with you.

Don't forget to check your tyres, and have plenty of petrol. Happy trails.

Thanks for that last one. But I missed your last note. I might take you up on the crater-type thing visit. Where is it located exactly?

I did receive a convincing 'YES'. We had a nice meal and some wine on the seafront of the diplomatic club. It was a quiet and starry evening. We then ordered some Sheesha (as we had never tried it), it got us into the cheery mood. I ordered some champayne (she had no idea why). We took a couple of glasses of Champayne, walked along the beach and as we walked I told her all the reasons I loved her. She smiled, i got down on to my knees and presented the ring. It was a perfect night.

From there we went to 2 parties and got home 5am!

Thank you all for your suggestions.

There is a hole in the desert up the Salwa Road about 5 miles.. and its approx 100 mtrs deep. Its very cool inside, and easy to decend/ascend.

At the bottom, you could have a table waiting ! Some good friends can arrange this. No wind to blow out the candles..!! etc etc. (we used to go and eat there during the summer months after a bit of desert roaming). Anyway, that would certainly be unforgettable venue. If you need to have a guide to get there, I'll volunteer... but I think maybe today is the day ??? so I'm too late.

Still maybe someone else can try that out.

Hope your lady's answer is an 'affirmative Houston' !!

Ooh, that's my favorite suggestion so far.

Thank you all for the advice. From not knowing what to do, to having so many options has made me all the more confused now. Really..I am hopeless at these things.

Don't worry beast666, I have spent more than enough time away from her to know that I would be a fool to lose her or be without her. In some ways, I am glad the visa-thing came-up, it has perversely made me think more about myself and my life and the future. It really has been something I have been thinking about for a very long time now.

So maybe i'l give the Sheraton a call today. But I also found a nice outdoor spot, an outside restaurant on the seafront of the Diplomatic club. It seems like a quiet spot for dinner, then some bubbly followed by an after dinner walk along the waters????? What do you think?

I always like the idea of having a table on a lonely beach.. with candles and food etc, and a surprise travel venture.

So, I suggest that you ask the Sheraton, or the Marriot (who both own boats) if they will set up a table for you on the Safliya island, and ferry you out there, and bring you back after two hours or so.

You can have the ice cube thing, (I don't suggest a dessert, as she may swallow the ring ! and then you'll have to look for it afterwards!)

If the hotels won't do the food thing, then there are lots of friends here on the forum !!! ... who you could bribe to be there on Safliya, and arrange the setting beforehand with a couple of guys who could act as 'waiters'.

Sheraton have a boat for hire for sure. There is also a guy called Basil, who does Paragliding... who could arrange something for you, by way of ferrying you out there, and perhaps helping to arrange the venue. Get his number from the Sheraton Recreation Centre.

Congratulations in advance.

Angel.

Proposing in public seems so wrong to me. Proposing is a sweet private moment n should be treated in this fashion. I know many ppl will think big is good but not me. Proposing marriage should be done in a romantic way, n nothing romantic about bringing so many strangers to watch.

I would recommend a lovely suite in a hotel with a candle dinner after which soft music with slow dancing n lovely wine. Kisses, whispers in the ears n bringing the heat on. Once the mood is set n all is ready, u propose n then u make love ;) Romance is a state of mind btw 2 ppl n not a show for all to c, except if what u wanted is to look romantic to the others n not ur partner :P . As said in football, nothing will win u the game like returning back to the basics :)

Dhow idea is good, be sure she is the one leaving aside the visa and all other issues. Seems to me like you rushing things, may be a little time away from her will help you to think clearly.

Well it is cooler in the desert. I would go down to the water a little past sealine and have a picnic dinner with champagne and everything, with all the stars and the moon and propose their.

Anymore ideas? there must be something unique here that would make the proposal memorable. The bubbly and my 1.5 carat diamond ring should do the business, but i need a wow factor in there too.....

I would love to fly out somewhere, but it really is tricky getting her a Visa to another Middle Eastern country. I would then need to reapply for another entry Visa into Qatar, big headache really.

We will get engaged here and get married in Mauritius next year, with a wild party on the Polish border on a Slovakian Mountain.

Four Seasons sounds like an idea.

Place the ring in an ice cube (you need to prepare it beforehand) and make sure its placed in her drink. You also need to plan it with the restaurant. You can alternatively get the restaurant chef to place it in the middle of her dessert. So when she finds it, you quickly get on one knee and you know the rest.

If you are doing it on the weekends...Why not take a short hop to Dubai...You can buy a Visa for her via Emirates Airlines for 3 days..and you would have loads of places and loads of options....

Besides Dubai has such places tailor-made, just give them a call and you will be surprized how they arrange every thing for you (I mean the hotels..)

PS: Make sure on your return you have an entry visa for her..

Just buy her the biggest rock you can afford, and take her out to a really nice place. Get a bottle of bubbly. Classic things aren't necessarily dull ;-)

sorry it was the way you started the post it came across as that the visa was the only reason!

Good luck are we all invited to the wedding?

My two friends got married over here he was british she was spanish they had no problems at all and took about 3 weeks for the paper work

I should have said that my partner is Polish. She doesn't have the exclusive Visa rights as us brits.

Don't worry, Visas were not the only reason for marrying her..she is without doubt one in a million...I can't even explain.

I may try the Four Seasons today and see what they say.

Agree..I wish I could do it outdoors...but it is far too warm!!

I tend to think marriage proposals would be better done outside, which unfortunatly is not really much of an option right now given the heat. But walking along the Corniche or out in the desert, someplace quiet and alone would be my suggestion. Maybe rent a dhow. Good Luck. :)

What are you going on about what exactly is the problem with her being here? Yes they say you are not meant to live together but i did it when i first came over if it is the visa companies do sponsor single women!! You can get married at the embassy takes about 4 weeks in all but this is a life changing thing don't do it over a visa!

You can get a visit visa which lasts for 3 months so you don't have to fly out every 21 days you fly every three months i am on it you can apply from britain for it and costs about 100 and lasts for 2 years
