Disgrace of veil

Homeaway
By Homeaway

I have always thought that the whole idea behind the veil was to avoid men from sinning and I really appreciate those who wear it out of being sacred.

However, I have seen the worst disgrace of this whole abaya thing in the form of dance called as "ma3alayah" where girls wearing full abayahs performing lesbian and acts related to sex in a party. Such a hypocrisy which I am sure is not backed by any religion.

True..I couldn't agree more!

Sorry for the delay.. My work is lil hectic so I couldn't follow the responses. My concern was the veil and the dirty acts in those kind of dances - in some extreme 'cases' a group of women would do the sexual acts.

Anyway I understood that these taboo things happen everywhere and the response of 'qatari princess' is sufficient to say that its not a norm here.

Actually I was thinking of more punk and rave parties where bisexual is the norm...

Of course things like this will go on in any country. And it is sad that its always the girls who are blamed and stereotyped while the men run away scot free!

As diamond girl said earlier.. this happens in every society. And, as muslims, we should not think we are immune to the problem. Although I must admit I think it happens far less in conservative countries then where I grew up but I have no guarantee that this is true.

Let's not forget that these dances are performed at some weddings.  As well as being sleazy, it is the height of tackiness to have that at your wedding.  Yurrccchhh.

not if it gets worse, I was just referring to the body movements of the women, not the whole social context.  Oh dear, I should have known it would be taken the wrong way, never mind.

maybe its just me.. but from what I saw from the video I don't really find it that disgusting.. Unless it gets alot worse than that? Although it angers me that muslims who believe in Allah would act in such a way.

But I've seen alot worse in nightclubs where bisexual is not all that bad.  And females bump, grind, and make out with girls and guys.

Of course perhaps I'm just saying that cuz i'm part of the younger generation who has partied hardy before practicing Islam. And much worse than these things are quite normal and acceptable with most of my mates from back in the days.

That its simply frowned upon and you hardly see it at weddings here if at all. Certainly not at men's weddings.  And I also mentioned that it's mostly common in Saudi and the UAE.

There is no such thing here in Qatar NOT at all. No.

No offence but its in UAE mostly and done by the baloshi or balouchi or yemani.

I rather think the point is that it IS happening in the Gulf.  Women are doing it and men are enjoying it as is evident on the video clips.  The women need the money they earn from it, the men are happy to pay for that kind of entertainment.  I'd hazard a guess that it is happening in ALL countries of the world.  Qatar ain't no different!

Qatari Princess has a point. Have you been to a wedding here where this dance took place? It's generally frowned upon and it could mean social suicide for the girl that performs the dance. And it's true, they specifically hire non-Khaleeji girls to do it. Girls from Sudan, Senegal, other African countries and even Palestine. Take Saudi and the UAE for example, these are the two countries where these dances are most common- specifically weddings...if the girls that appear in the videos come from well known backgrounds it would mean the apocalypse! that's why you see some of these vids on youtube- these women dance 'm3alayah'  for a living, so they dont mind.

there are people with mindsets like that in every nationality..even Qatari. No telling WHERE it orginated...not being sarcastic, but you are VERY young and still extremely idealistic..which is good, but you also need to learn there is a total HUGE world out there that isn't quite as black and white as it seems.

You know..reminds me of the Arabic version of girlie shows/strip joints...which "foreigners" wives don't like either, QP, but its a sad fact of life that it DOES happen.

It's not techniquely true, cause Arabs the real Arabs won't dare do such a thing, and by the way where did you see them?? It's possible but they're not originally Qatari or from the Gulf, they could be forigners in disguise!

Actually I think the Abaya looks very dressy on most of the girls especially now that they have nice desings on them and on thing about it is is very practical if you have to rush outside quickly you are dresssed in a minute.

I could have used a viel on my face yesterday as I was out all day and now have to deal with the consequences of sunbure. lol

MashAllah DG.. I hope to raise my own children to stick to what they believe despite the consequences! As free choice is very important. What I wish to ingrain in them is that every choice they make has both positive as well as negative consequences. Some that we may not sometimes see! Allahu Alim. and I hope they will have the ability to analyse themselves and choose carefully! So I guess the mind should be used and the end decision lies with the heart. If that makes any sense at all!

Probably, PH, by their families I guess.  Fortunately I am blessed with a family who encourage one another to think for themselves and make their own decisions about life, including wardrobe.

but don't you agree DG that many people feel pressured into wearing hijab and abaya..

Because it sends the message that they are good girls! And in that sense it becomes more cultural then for the sake of Allah?

By diamond• 8 Mar 2008 01:36

I guess it's all about choice.  I choose to wear abaya and shayla sometimes as it is a strong part of my culture here in Qatar and at times I want to identify with that.  No-one has ever said that I have to wear it.  I think that's only in Saudi where it is law (I think?)

Most people in the world want to identify with the culture they 'belong to' by dressing the way that the majority do in that culture.
