The difference between revenge and Justice...

The difference between revenge and Justice is anger...

What do you all think?

I was thinking along the lines of King Solomon and the baby when I said old fashioned.  I for one am with justice.  I wouldn't want someone to be punished  excessively just because I'm emotionally distraught.

I dont know how a view on a justice system can be old fashioned or new fashioned... justice is justice at the end of the day irrespective of times. However, whether it was fair earlier and whether it is fair now... I dont think it was fair then and it is fair now... so in all probability revenge still seems ones best bet... atleast it would be satisfying that one did what best it could do within its means.

I think that's a pretty old fashioned view.  I can't see too many people being happy with being sent to prison or executed, and I don't think it's possible to make victims happy either.  I think a fair judgement is what's BEST for both parties, regardless of whether they agree it's fair.

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 14:56

As per my understanding a judgement is only that much fair as much it can satisfy both the parties, if it cannot it isn't fair.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 14:33

Oh I think there are fair judgements, but not in the eyes of the victims.  Which is why we don't let victims decide the judgements.

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 14:31

You are saying now what I said from the beginning or rather said by LP and built upon by me that there arent any fair judgements and so the revenge option seems better.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 14:08

Sure they say that, but what would have been a fair judgement to them?  Would there ever have been a fair enough judgement?

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 13:48

Pilgram...  I have heard people saying had the judgement been fair I wouldn't have taken the step I took.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 13:36

I disagree HGO, which is why you often hear the phrase "death isn't good enough for him/her"

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 13:27
happygolucky

Pilgram... I think so that if judgement given is fair the victim should be or rather would be content.

Casey Anthony is an unfortunate byproduct of the system.  For the hundreds of innoncent people who are rightly released for "failure to prove beyond a reasonable doubt" there will be the minority who get away who are possibly guilty. After looking at the facts in the case, I sympathize with the jury, it must have been a very difficult decision, and I'm not sure I would have made a different one. I think perhaps if the prosecution hadn't tried to go for the death penalty it may have turned out differently. She however is a prime example of why we have courts to decide these things, why should emotionally charged strangers hold a persons life in their hands?

In rhe above case, she was found NOT guilty by a jury, yet outsiders want revenge for the death of her child..

Such is human nature .. Look at the recent case of  Casey Anthony murder case.. Justice has been served, yet people are wanting revenge :O(

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 10:34
anonymous

Many people I know would not even be content with "an eye for an eye" they'd want an eye, a leg, a hand, etc.  And still probably not be happy.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 10:34

When people have the justice they are seeking for they could either stop thinking about revenge and go on with their lives or still take revenge bec.they are not satisfied with the punishment given to the criminal.. There are really people who believes in "an eye for an eye,a tooth for a tooth"..I heard many cases where the victim's family get justice but the criminal being sentenced for a couple of years was shot dead.. I don't think that people get contented, the demands and wants are always revolving..anyway,contentment dpends on every person..one can get contented but it's not always the case for some..

not every revenge is justified by court but a few :)

revenge is personal, justice is global, but may coincide

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 10:05

You really think so HGL.  I don't think victims are ever content, even when justice has been served.

Interesting views coming from all...

It seems that revenge and justice can never complement each other... Unlike in movies, wherein the good guy finishes the bad guy as an act of revenge, we say 'Justice done!'... But when the same plays in real life, we say 'the law must take its own course'

Different perspectives for different situations....

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 09:59

If justice given is fair, the victim would be satisfied... the feeling of revenge wouldn't come.

By britexpat• 19 Jul 2011 09:56

Justice is about fairness, whereas revenge is about satisfaction for the victim.

For example: Rizks spills Karak Chai on my new Armani summer pajamas with the built in padding. Justice would be served if he bought me a replacement pair and apologized. Revenge would be sweet if I could tie him down and do the same with extra hot and sweet chai :O)

If only there was anything called fair judgement, when talking of justice, no one would go for revenge....but sadly that isnt the reality.

justice is sweet revenge is bitter

Revenge is not always justice and justice will not always take your vengance into account.

Can a person who only wants revenge ever really believe in a fair judgement?

justice is for the rich, revenge is the only affordable thing for the poor people. ;)

Revenge make the man blind whilst justice keep it open

If only Justice did give justice...leave aside licking of wounds of the victim, a fair judgement can have that effect in itself.

By Eagley• 19 Jul 2011 08:44

Awwww, LP :0(  Sigh... justice is what some people stand for, so alrighty then. Mercy above that makes it a double whammy.

Pilgram, well said. And the logical conclusion would be to live and let live.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 08:42

Justice is supposed to give justice, not lick the victims wounds for them.

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 08:39
happygolucky

And justice, in trying to be logical, doesn't give the offended what it deserves...so still feel revenge is better than justice as atleast it makes me satisfied.

By timebandit• 19 Jul 2011 08:38

Could it be that revenge is when a victim retaliates, and justice is when the system retaliates on the victims behalf? Just a thought. Other than that LP's equation looks good to me.

By anonymous• 19 Jul 2011 08:35
anonymous

Revenge only takes your side of the story, and your feelings into account.  At it's core it's selfish and illogical. Justice takes in all sides of the stories, everyone's feelings, and tries to be logical.

By Speedysid• 19 Jul 2011 08:31

indeed well put....

Somehow, we as a society are moving towards 'revenge' rather than justice... Has the legal system gone kaput, or is there still hope?

By happygolucky• 19 Jul 2011 08:27

Agree with LP....

By Rizks• 19 Jul 2011 08:21

Revenge is, when i tear off briteys pink lingerie and he runs back of me to tear my purple lungi - tat is revenge....:(Justice is, when court orders britey 2 months jail with 10 lashes per day for tearing my ONE only lungi...:(

Justice= Revenge - (Anger+Hatred)

I think the difference is that with revenge you get what you want and with justice you don't!
