Death Penalty

By Gypsy

I feel like opening a nice little can of worms. So I'm going to bring up the topic of the death penalty. I would like everyone who believes in killing criminals to raise their hands and vote aye, and those who don't vote nay.

Also I would like all those who believe that abortion is ok to vote aye and those who don't vote nay.

Sorry I haven´t read all the answers above, but here are my two riyals

Death Penalty. Nay. Two reasons: My personal beliefs, as I believe that taking a life aways is God´s, and only His, right. The second reason, more complicated to elaborate, but to make it quick, I think society has much more efficient ways to deal with crime. Needless to say, that there is a good chance that the person did not have a fair trial, as it happens in most countries were death penalty is legal and he/she could be proved to be innocent later on.

Abortion. Nay. A fetus or even an embrion is still life. A human life. I´m all for women to have choices, but not when the choice involves another innocent human life. If you don´t want the baby, or think you will neglet his needs, give him for adoption.

Unwanted children should not be born. There is enough misery on the planet.

Yes to the death penalty for murderers but only if beyond even the slightest doubt. That will prevent the execution of innocent.

May the roof above us never fall in, and may the friends below never fall out!

I can understand why people are against abortion. I myself would be hardpressed to personally choose to have an abortion NOW as I think I am completely capable of caring for a child. This is not the same opinion I had when I was 16 or 21.

However I would never ever take the right to an abortion away from another woman.

So even if you disagree with it, do you disagree personally or do you think you have the right to dictate your belief to every other woman on this planet.

I beg to disagree Cornellian... heart starts to develop within 4 weeks of fertilization and in five to six weeks, first heartbeat begins... trust me.. i've seen it ;)

My personal belief is that the death penalty is an easy way out for people who have committed severe crimes. You violently kill someone and you get the benefit of a quick shot to the head? No way. That's not punishment. And that doesn't bring the victim back, it just makes the executioner a murderer as well.

As for abortion...I wonder how many people sitting on death row right now would have been aborted by their mothers if they'd had the choice? Instead most of them were raised in abusive and negligent households, which turned them into criminals.

I guess contra conception is different issue. Preventing an egg to be fertilized is an individual's choice. But to cease the development of the one already fertilized (fetus) is another issue. Though it still depends on individual's choice; which could be on the degree of spirituality as well as morality.

I bet this issue will turn into circle since we have different levels of beliefs.

Eye for an eye, despite of current modernization and technology advancement in the world, better education, etc.. etc, crime is still a crime whether it happens during the premordial or during the modern times. Life untimely taken, possession stolen, rape, still there is a victim... punishment.. death for life taken, stealing and rape... life imprisonment(goodness hard to be in the judicial)

But come to thing about raping a rapist? I think better jail forever, slowly punished him with severe boredom.

I like how there are "exceptions" when it comes to abortion...ummm...it's a woman's choice, as it is HER body, not the governments, nor anyone else.....

Oh and spare a thought to all those innocent lives that have been slain because of a thing called "the death penalty"....whatever hey?

aye for the death penalty

nay for abortion (except in the case of rape and the mother's life is in danger)

I'm against death penalty, who are we to decide who gets to live and who gets to die ? It's not our decision to make. Besides, even if the criminal has done so many awful things, killing him wouldn't be the ultimate punishment, putting him in jail for the rest of his life would.

As for abortion, I'm not against it, in some situations like the one Gypsy mentioned, it's better not to have a child in the first place than to have him and then abandon him.

Oh and starlight, a fetus doesn't develop from the minute of fertilization, a fetus only develops and has a beating heart after about 4 months of fertilization. So before 4 months, it's not really considered a human being. I think if abortion is to take place, it should happen before 4 months otherwise it would be considered murder.

We agree then.

No one will ever agree when conception becomes too far gone to deemed a life.

If it is the moment of conception, two cells, then we are almost just as bad for not using the potential of every egg?

Is that what all the no contraception and don't spill your seed stuff is about?

An eye for an eye is from a 6,000 year old law code starlight, I would like to think we have evolved since then. People who say yes to the death penality and no to abortion are people who only see the world in Black and White. Guess what, there are many shades of Gray in this world, open your eyes to them.

For heinous crimes... an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Fair enough.

To abort an innocent fetus... there is no thing as chance, everthing happens for a reason. A fetus starts to develop from the minute of fertilization. If your conscience can take to stop the heart beat of a developing human being ... then only God can judge you.

JBH if that woman is so irresponsible as to have had to have an abortion 6 times do you really think she should be raising a child??? I think that woman should be sterilized personally.

I knew a girl in high school that was raped when she was 13 and became pregnant. Her parents, being good Catholics, forced her to keep the child and raise it. She wound up becoming a drug addict by 16 and abandoned the child anyway. She couldn't look at the child. Her life was ruined because her parents made her keep that baby. SO does "saving" the babies life justify ruining the mothers.

somebody killed your mother , should he be killed ? or kiss his ass !

somebody raped a girl then he killed her ,should he be killed ? or what ? i think my answer is clear ..

A pregnent killed her baby with NO reason ? is this accepted? NO ;

except one case ..for health reasons and doc. advice, she can abort ..

SO LETS JUST LOOK TO REASON ... THEN WILL DECIDE...

Who is more innocent than an unborn baby?

By dragonfly212• 24 May 2007 21:10

Death penalty is cruel and inhuman. Person convicted with some degree murder or any other criminal charges should received life time punishment in jail and have to serve the community under some strictly watch from the authorities. Let him/her suffer and realised how wrong for what he done. and give them proper therapy also treatment to make him/her be better person again and can function normally to social community. Whatever the charges for first degree criminal, death is not the right judgement.

For abortion, is totally in woman decision wheater she want to keep the baby or not. As I said is not government, religion, men or culture decision. Please understand that we woman the one have to get pregnant for 9 1/5 months, so is only fair the decision is up to the woman.

no to the death penalty...too many innocent people die that way although if someone murdered one of my family then maybe I would feel like killing them but would hope I would not and let Allah be the judge.

I'm pro choice. I think a woman has the right to decide what to do with her body.

I'll wait for the backlash from my fellow Muslims. But that's my point of view.

By King Edshel• 24 May 2007 19:35

the this criminal killed someone then why would it be considered wrong to kill him? Does he got the right to kill other people, but no one got the right to kill him? If someone can kill anyone and knows that he/she would not be killed or punished .. what would prevent him/her from committing more crimes and kill more people? This dead person was having life, family, maybe wife and kids ... and that criminal ends all of that ... Don't you think that he/she should be punished?

By JBH• 24 May 2007 19:34

Really complex subjects.

And too serious for me to give straight answers.

If you torture and kill someone for fun, should you die?

If you torture and kill someone for national security, should you die?

If you torture and kill someone because you yourself have been tortured all your life, should you die?

There are reasons to terminate that can be justified as mentioned previously, but should it be used repeatedly as contraception, I know of one famous person who claimed to have had 6.

That's great and all but there have been so many innocent people that have been killed because of the death penalty. What would you care hey, you didn't know them personally!!!!

So if a woman is ganged raped, and fall's pregnant, your saying it's not right for her to abort...Oh I can give you plenty more examples like this… Just try me!

By krok• 24 May 2007 18:32

the logic lies in the fact that an unborn baby hasn't done any harm to anyone AND has the potential to do great things (even mediocre is fine by me, actually).

A criminal, on the other hand, has robbed someone else of his/her right to live(not to mention those who kill many others. Usually they show inhuman cruelty and brutality, and will continue with their evil deeds unless someone stops them.

That's my logic, and I'm sticking to it, whether I'm a hypocrite or not!!

By Scorpio• 24 May 2007 18:26

People who agree with the death penalty are hypocrites. They are usually the ones against abortion. So it's ok to kill a human by the firing squad or a bullet in the head but they say it's wrong for a woman to abort because it's murder! Please explain this logic?

No to the death penalty and yes to abortion!

Definitely no to abortion, but people who commit brutal crimes, especially to children, should lose the right to live. Society has too many sickos as it is.

The only problem is when innocent people are found guilty and sentenced to death...
