If you think that cultures are interesting, then POLYGAMY is part of a culture. You can not disregard certain issues from a culture!

You think people would still not understand? Let me give you an example (although I don't support polygamy); one of the reasons for marrying another wife, is WARS. They had so many wars at that time. Your neighbor & best friend dies in the war. Nobody to support his wife & kids. You can not do that because you are a "stranger" to this woman. So, out of your love to your late friend, you go & marry his wife in order to take care of his family.

Do you think that people are not interested in knowing this fact? Do you think that there will be nobody at all who would consider this point of view (at least I would love to hear others points of view)? If you think so, then you are right. Such issues should not be discussed.

If you think otherwise, then I think that you were wrong and that people should be free to discuss ANY topic on Earth...or Mars :-)

I don't think it is important in these debates to prove who is right or wrong. I think that knowing & learning the others point of views, going back home to think things over, then being brave enough to absorb the wise "guidelines" from every culture even if it was against all the theories you have know all your life. You can still adjust them without losing your dignity.

The Dalai Lama says: open your arms to change, but never give up your principals.

isn't it good to elarn about others culture and how they love in their country,..? won't that b a pleasent experiance than talking about monogamy and polygamy , at the end of which, we won't still understand why some people has many wives and why some have one wife and y some have none...?

please let me know if anyone else is interested in spending an hour or so a week discussing some topics which will be useful for all.

qatari, thanks for all ur encouragment

Yeah of course it exists, but there are people who deny it or say it happens everywhere.....that's there way of justifying it!

I'd love to hear people's thoughts on modern-day slavery in the Gulf.

I'm shocked at some of the justifications I am reading from bloggers on other sites.

Does it exist here?

If so...

Is enough being done to deal with the problem?

Do we in the region remain too quiet about the problem and in effect accomodate perpetrators?

Is the Gulf's world-trade relations going to force it to confront the existence of modern-day slavery?

This is a debate I would rock up to...

so we see things (polygamy or tourism) differently in what is "constructive" or not. OK! Fine! But who is to judge? You? Why? Me? Why? A 3rd party? How wise (or party animal) is this party? What are the parameters (guidelines..hahah) of our judgment?

I am sure lots of non-arab expats would like to discuss & learn a lot about our culture, religion, politics, traditions, habits, history...etc, and I also would love to know more about theirs, but do you see this "constructive"?

please don't bring arms to table.. what knowledge do we gain by discussing polygamy or about some weapons..? i knew wll this things would pop up that's why i said clearly" things from which we all can gain knowledge"

why don't our first talk be about any foreign country we visited..? we can tell other about wat we found interesting ih that country, our travel stories and culture of that country. we can also bring fotos if we wish , taken from there. i think that is a good topic to start with

But you still did not answer the question:

who will decide, why & how are we gonna agree on "constructive topics that will bring knowledge to all"???

I was reading the few lines novita77 and airsuplly and i almost got a headache. it is so strong. If only keyboards could feel the weight and the pain, then we would bury many.

Mufy suggested if we can have dialogue, discussion of any topic. perhaps i would guide you. Lets (me not attending) choose a topic on 'how to deal with real estate agents' or 'business opportunities in qatar' or 'charity from expatriates to less fortunate workers' or something, anything. (me not attending)

There is a lot of learning in walking around. Why sit and discuss? Lets walk around and help wherever we can.

A bit a day. Does one need learning to help. Just put yourself in others shoes.

Guilty when I waste my efforts on trash people

By novita77• 25 Jun 2007 13:15
novita77

i never pointing my finger to anyone or mention your name. Why are you jumping over the wagon? Guilty feeling?

By anonymous• 25 Jun 2007 13:13
anonymous

I dare you if you can provide any quote from me where I have mentioned the word "slave" (this is just typical of you people to lie & put words in others mouths to initiate troubles)

Yes I said "master" but there was someone else who started the racist insults (but people like you dont want to confess that) and I usually deal with trash like this in my own way.

I don't mind opening the "racist" issue & insults with you again but we have to open a new thread. Not here.

I also like to remind you than in order for you not to be insluted, you have to be fair. You should not put words in peoples mouths & you have to go & give your "advices" to the person who started the racist insults in order for me to accept your "advices". But it is totally unacceptable to put the blame on the person who was only firing back.

By novita77• 25 Jun 2007 12:32
novita77

any discussion would be nice ... as far as there are no 'names calling' and term 'i am your master', 'you are my slaves' etc etc.

That means you are free to chose a topic to discuss, and the people are free to join, or simply ignore/drop the issue. This is EXACTLY where I want to reach. This is my idea about free minds & free spirits.

Unfortunately, there are other people who would shut you up (block or lock you) when they don't agree with your point of view.

I was trying to make sure that the proposed discussion group will not act in this (shameful?) manner

IOU

I am not going to discuss types of marriages in this thread as this is an alternation to our topic.

I agree with you that we can discuss polygamy/monogamy in the above proposed discussion group, as I think that people are free to discuss any issue on Earth...or even on Mars.

I am ONLY discussing here: who will decide, why & how are we gonna agree on "constructive topics that will bring knowledge to all"

I guess if someone suggests a topic and wants a group to meet and discuss it then, if it's a subject which others wish to debate they will turn up. If not, then they wont.

Marriage from multiple women in Islam might not be allowed for those who might result in damaging the society with their marriage by bringing more illiterate, poor, and in many cases starving children to the society. ( http://www.answering-christianity.com/polygamy.htm)

In Christianity, Old Testament & New Testament has different explanation.

Personally, I value Monogamy. But we can still hear what those Polygamy got to say in a good and constructive debate!

We can discuss the topic, why not?

I remember debating for "ROBIN HOOD!"

So here is another example, mufy! If we chose to discuss Polygamy, would you consider it as "constructive topic that would bring knowledge to all"?

I swear I wasn't trying to scare you off. Just wanted to check your mentality/ideas/preniew & see how are you gonna construct the "guidelines" of the proposed discussion groups.

No hard feelings, man!

What weapons can we bring to the table?

Or is it gonna be unarmed combat?

I would like to discuss polygamy?

Supposing we chose to discuss the "Crimes of the Hagana Terrorist Group which killed thousands of Palastineans and the effect of such crimes on promoting violence/terrorism in that spot of the world"...would this be a "constructive topic that brings knowledge to all"?

By mufy• 25 Jun 2007 10:24

..do you think that you'd need to enforce some "guidlines" for your "Discussions" or do you think the we are adults & are free to chose ANY topic to discuss?

Do you think that during the discussions, you'd need to shut some mouths up or you'd just ignore them?
