Company to offer ‘period leave’ to its female staff

For a lot of people even discussions surrounding them are very much a taboo subject.

But a company in Bristol has decided to go against convention and introduce a ‘period policy’ which will give female staff time-off work during a painful monthly cycle.

Not only does Coexist want the formal guidelines to allow women to take time off without labeling it as an illness, it also hopes to increase workplace productivity.

‘I have managed many female members of staff over the years and I have seen women at work who are bent over double because of the pain caused by their periods,’ director Bex Baxter, 40, told the Bristol Post.

Bex Baxter said women can be three times more productive immediately after a period

‘Despite this, they feel they cannot go home because they do not class themselves as unwell.

‘And this is unfair. At Coexist we are very understanding. If someone is in pain – no matter what kind – they are encouraged to go home.

‘But, for us, we wanted a policy in place which recognises and allows women to take time for their body’s natural cycle without putting this under the label of illness.’

‘I want us to break down that shame and replace the negativity with positivity,’ she said.

Is this taking diversity too far ? What about us men ?

acchabaccha: Valid points. however times are a changing.. Look at India or Pakistan. 10 years ago , it would have been thought abhorant for ads for "ladies products" to be aired on TV.. Now it is a common and accepted sight..

Brit: There is a very important factor you are missing and this is "possibly" because you are not aware of the eastern culture. NO female in the east would ever like to disclose in any way that she would be soon going through her periods and avail leave from work for this purpose While I do agree that females do feel some discomfort during this period of time, they still continue to give their output and in my working life both here and in my country, I have never seen a situation where there has been a low or poor output of work from females due to their cycle. And there are thousands and thousands of females working in companies in the east. This whole new concept has now just begun in the "west" and will stay there. There are certain things in the eastern culture that would not not allow such ideas to take ground.

acchabaccha: As I said before, It is a good way of promoting company loyalty from the women and also a great PR exercise for the organization. The bottom line is that if the company can afford it and they feel that it helps the bottom line, then why not .

the reason for this is mood swing and effect in the work. there could be errors and no company would appreciate that.

instead of the boss shouting; its better to give them leave.

It is one of those "stupid" things that has now started in the "west." Females have always had their periods from the time they have inherited the earth. It is a very personal and a confidential matter with them. Even when all these modern progress in handling such situations, women knew all the time how to take care of this natural issue without other males let alone females, getting to know about their physical condition they were going through. Also, it is a fact that all not women have painful periods. It is just in the "west" that working women would now be allowed to declare that they were going on "leave because of their periods." Women from the east and African countries may need possibly another 500 years to reach that mental stage of "progress" when the word "shame" is no longer present in their language, vocabularies or dictionaries.

Its a great way of getting the buy-in of the female workers and if it actually helps increase productivity and enhance loyalty than why not ..
