Christianity - Convocation Gown -Any relation

By s_isale

A Christian group on Sunday demanded an unconditional apology from Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Jairam Ramesh for terming the wearing of the traditional convocation robe as a "barbaric colonial practice".

Describing Ramesh's statement as remarks against Pope and Christians around the world, Sajan K George, president of the Bangalore-based Global Council of Indian Christians (GCIC), said the remarks have deeply offended religious sentiment.

Is the dress worn by the Pope and convocation gown the same?

By anonymous• 4 Apr 2010 18:04

probably, the choice of words was incorrect..

i dont understand why he called this a ' barbaric colonial practice'..

its certainly not uncivilised or unsophisticated...its a custom which may or may not be followed in free india.

lol I am not getting senti. For your other points, we inherited a lot from the British, some good, some bad, some that don't really matter. I wish we could get rid of the bureaucracy that Brits left behind more than anything else. Maybe the gown thing wasn't important when looked at in isolation but it's more of a symbolic gesture for me and I appreciate him doing it.

By smoke• 4 Apr 2010 13:21
smoke

Anyways to answer the question to this topic..NO there's no relation to Christianity and the Convocation Gown.

Good to know some 'real' people.

who use indian rupee but hate gandhi in DHOTI, may hate written satyamev jayte in "sanskrit", and India itself because it's all "farming' everywhere.....

....

By anonymous• 4 Apr 2010 13:06

I just didn't like the comments about farming. India is an agricultural based economy and it is still the back bone of Indian economy. Come to think of it farming is the back bone of my family's economy too :P

to hell with traditions as far as i'm concern, only tradition is CHANGE, everything changaes and thats the tradition!!

I did not like some comments on very indian identities and only some1 falsly indian can comment so.

as far pants shirts.....who says it's any1 copyright property; clothing is routine, changes over period of time, else all of us may be using tree balks still...

By smoke• 4 Apr 2010 12:55
smoke

Painther truth be told you and I would not be talking english had it not been for the British..save the sarcastic act. The pant and shirt that you wear is not Indian traditions..

Wearing the gown is not a prerequisite to obtain any degree, but if its the rule of the university they yes it should be followed. A lot of traditions don't serve any purpose, so should all traditions be thrown out the window? How many Indians are truly following traditions?

Secondly my main issue with this topic was the title itself. The guy comparing the convocation gown to that of the priests and Pope..hence my earlier remark of him being an ignorant moron. I dont give a toss if people get their degrees in the nude.

Painther you are entitled to your own opinion as well as i am. So yeah you are free to not discuss this any further if my point is not getting to you. Dont get all sentimental about being Indian...i'm very proud of being Indian myself but some of these politicians just get on my nerves with their whole I want to be Indian but i like shitting in English toilets.

You guys only seem to be reading what you like to see. Please read again..i have nothing against dothis or farming, but when universities have their traditions of wearing the gown to symbolize a person graduating in a particular field of study..you cant just say oh i dont want to wear it coz its something the British started. Thats bullshit. If any Indian would think like that they THEY should have stuck to farming and not got into universities. Thats my point.

It was gandhi who was most backward wearing dhoti all his life...lol

Yes it's bad WK, you are backward (i;m not saying, smoke's version), even from same village you produced "Kalpana Chawla"..(indian must be knowing who she was)......:)-

Actually a lot of my family is still into farming and wear Dhotis, anything wrong in that?

By smoke• 4 Apr 2010 12:35

If they all think its useless then why follow all the other western traditions/habits? Stick to dhotis and go back to farming.

very good smoke, what a claim,

u mean there was no education/ including degress before oxford???

I thought in ancient india people from far use to come for studies to nalanda/taxsila....

By anonymous• 4 Apr 2010 12:33

Everyone applauded him when he did that so I guess more than one person think it is useless ;)

By smoke• 4 Apr 2010 12:31
smoke

You are right, but i dont have a problem with the wearing of the gown during the convocation ceremony now do I?

If you read up on the history of this practice its got more to do with a color of the degree that you graduate in. Being that it was first started in Universities like Oxford and Cambridge and then continued there on since. all i'm saying is just coz ONE moron think its useless to wear the gown doesn't make it wrong.

By painther• 4 Apr 2010 12:22

smoke,

I won't comment on first part, since i don't know in detail, so obviously i'm not ignorant moron.

but for 2nd part-

for dhoti, farming & sanskrit, i suggest you should make urself right before making any comment. You are also the produce of the same and NOT coming from mars.

By smoke• 4 Apr 2010 12:13
smoke

painther if you tell me that the convocation gown is similar to what the Pope wears then yes i'd call you an ignorant moron too.

I dont have any issues with what anyone wears, the English language was introduced to India along with other educations from the British times, why follow THOSE British traditions too? Stick to learning farming and Sanskrit too :P

Perhaps they should come in Dhothi?
