Chinese rush to adopt Orphans

This one got me a bit teary this morning. :)

"While in one sense totally alone, they huddle together in their thousands in refugee camps across the Chinese province.

The plight of the children has prompted huge numbers of couples to offer to care for them. Phone lines to the Sichuan Civil Affairs Department in the province's capital, Chengdu, which handles adoptions in the region, have been jammed since soon after the quake on May 12, with tens of thousands of couples offering their services as prospective parents.

There has been a widespread outpouring of grief and sympathy for the 5,500 children whose parents are dead or missing, fuelled by images of orphans wearing refugee tags. With 18,618 people still unaccounted for, the number of children left alone is expected to rise.

Many couples seeking to adopt earthquake orphans are also motivated by the chance to get around China's one-child policy."

I'm just actually shocked people want these kids. Adoption is so frowned upon in North East Asia. I guess this is one of the benefits of the single child policy, people simply want children now, no matter who gave birth to them.

AS long as there are now ulterior motives, It is a beautifil thing to see the people stand behind their fellow countrymen. Hats off to them.

Motivation is when your dreams put on work clothes.

Definately,

As many children from abusive families will testify, having parents adopted or not may not always be in the childs interest.

The point of taking care of an orphand is to offer him a stable and loving atmosphere so he can grow and be a benefit to society and himself.

May God help these children and show them the love they so dearly need.

but it is a worry, however if people are willing to adopt from countries where females are equally revered then we can only hope it sets a precedence for others

policy in this instance need to be revoked, the prospective parents vetted, albeit quickly so that some of these children have a chance at life.

This happened after the tsunami also. people rushed to adopt orphans, but later some cases of child abuse and child trafficking came to light.. So, the government needs to be careful when allowing adoption.. There are too many sickos around..

Unfortunatly Speed I don't think the same will happen in Myanmar. I'm afraid these children will be left to rot in orphanages (if they are lucky) because of Myanmar's refusal to let in foreign aid. Also my guess is most people in Myanmar have a hard enough time feeding their own children, let alone taking in orphans. :(

including Chengdu, the main city of Sichuan Province (job related travels thou). China is a very progressive country if you are staying in Shanghai but you could easily feel the uncomfortness of the one-child policy imposed by the goverment. Thou I don't argue with the reason behind the policy, you could see it in actuality the effect it has in the peoples lives after the child grew and as expected, being an educated child would rather find his/her fortune in premier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing or Hongkong.

Maybe in a way, the earthquake tragedy will result somehow happiness for the few children and couples who maybe ending up with each other thru adoption.

It is really a heartbreaking to see thru news what happened to that province after the earthquake (I am an eyewitness of the beauty of that province not only in Chengdu but in the area of the epicenter of the earthquake)
