Can the driving of Hummers be justified?

Serendipity
By Serendipity

Well, can they?

They're among the most fuel inefficient vehicles on the roads if not the most fuel inefficient:

http://www.data360.org/graph_group.aspx?Graph_Group_Id=363

And they also emit the most greenhouse gas emissions.

What possible justification can there be for driving such a vehicle in this day and age of $100 a barrel oil and even wars and people's lives lost over increasingly scarce oil resources and fast depleting reserves?

Just wanting to start a debate as there are lots of them on the roads over here.

I'm really surprised he's not selling it before he leaves Qatar. Fuel being expensive everywhere else will limit potential buyers.

thats funny..... Will remember to look for the boys leaning over the bonnet in future....

Ah Dweller, so its already on the market.... I wanted to buy it from him... but it was a little out of my price range.... I buy cars to suit my dogs space needs, and the H2 would be perfect....

you would be very wrong to assume that about people buying sports cars... it all depends on the sports car they are purchasing...

if a man works on his car to be come fast... he has a tool...

if a man purchase a car to be come fast... he is a tool...

just an old saying we used to use around the shop

It's already been advertised in a French newspaper as being available "in Tunisia" in the new year.

Who in Tunisia would buy it I don't know.

Meh, they don't impress me. I want my little blue lamborghini with the orange interior, That's my dream car. :)

As for ecological affects. Small sized SUVs or pickups are more efficient and just as good (if not better) for driving here.

I have to hang my head in shame and admit.... i love Hummers.... it is the ultimate 'shagmobile'.....:-)

IMHO, and I say that again... IMHO, men that drive sports cars are actually trying to make up for something they lack in other departments... where as a Hummer... well... its probably the same reason, but I do 4 x 4's before I do a sports car....;-)

Henners, its a personal choice as to what people drive.... personally I feel safer in a large 4 x 4 than on in a sedan... and with the way people drive here, I am sure you can understand why....

BTW... Dweller.... he's going to be selling it in the new year... curious to see what he gets next....

I don't think there's much justification for many of the big 4WD's we see around town (badly driven or otherwise). A huge percentage of locals and expats have at least one gas guzzling 4wd and how many actually use the car to go off-road every weekend / tow a boat / use the car for the purpose it was designed? Not that many I'll bet.

I'm not encouraging 4wd owners to rush down to the Inland Sea and start tearing up the desert btw - it's a total disaster down there now because of too many people leaving their filthy garbage behind (along with all their broken limbs - the weekend accident rate is unbelievable). The one area of natural beauty that Qatar is now totally destroyed. Will these people ever learn?

i think that hummers are the epitome of too much money and not enough taste.... but many people like to drive a rocket launcher to do their shopping at megamart........

so i must be wrong ;)

i think its obvious that its just a status symbol... kind of like buying a Ferrari... it has no gas or ecological benifits... yet they are bought by people who dont even have the balls to put them over 140 clicks... more less care about how much gas there using...

same with the bugati veryon... that car does 247 miles an hour on the get go and has to be run on 97 octane at a minimum and gets even worse gas millage... not to mention that the people who buy them wont have the balls to open them up because its just a symbol...

if i had the money i would buy something that make since... and is just as fast... wrx Subaru impreza STI because there a turbo charged boxter 4cylinder and at a stage 4 setup can give a ferrari a run for its money and with a swap of tires can out run a hummer off road... and its only 50 thousand and less... so screw you Ferrari lambo and Bugatti

I just went to the website www.fueleconomy.gov and made a comparison of the popular SUVs in Doha -

Hummer H3

EPA Mileage 15

Annual Tonnes of CO2 emitted 12.2

Toyota Landcruiser

EPA Mileage 13

Annual Tonnes of CO2 emitted 14.1

Nissan Armarda

EPA Mileage 14

Annual Tonnes of CO2 emitted 13.1

So Hummer is more efficient than the other popular SUVs in Doha

Or

What about the Gallardo ?

EPA Mileage 13

Annual Tonnes of CO2 enitted 14.1

And finally........

Toyota Prius

EPA mileage 46 !!!

Annual Tonnes of CO2 emitted 4 !!!!!

Seen many of these on the roads of Doha ?

Arguements are easy to make on judging a book by it's cover, but a little research and any arguement can be twisted with a few selective statistics.

And yes, I drive a Hummer H3. My wife chose it for it's looks and ruggedness, same reasons she chose me !!!!! :-)

What is the point of having such a big car and no honeys to drive around, except a bunch of weird guys.

this is quite a controversial topic. In my opinion I think that Hummers are a waste of steel.

If we are talking about status symbols and SPS (Small penis syndrome) then I agree. But if it's pollution and the waste of a scarce resource then I'd have to say that cars are not the issue, it's power plants that give us all the power needed for the A/C systems that have to run 24/7 for most of the year because houses and building are not designed with an insulating system that saves energy, I live in a brand new bungalow on alwaab and if I turn off my AC unit for 5 minutes the room temperature goes up fast and exceeds the outside temperature.

And don't even get me started on water waste....

Since the car is an American design we must ask the spider man for his advisory and protest scheme.

I wonder How he feels about the environment, water and his people in Qatar.

I do have to agree with what you are saying...but seems driving a status symbol means a lot more than caring about other issues..you see them everywhere...not only here but in other countries also...sadly enough
