Maze.

Qatar's Pearl loses its lustre for celeb chef Gordon Ramsay
Rebecca Bundhun
-------------------------------------------------

Gordon Ramsay's Maze restaurant on the Pearl-Qatar has closed, just months after an alcohol ban was introduced on the retail and dining development in Doha.

The decision to close the restaurant also follows the termination last October of the British celebrity chef's partnership with Verre in the Hilton Dubai Creek hotel, which was Ramsay's first overseas restaurant. However, two new Ramsay restaurants have opened in recent weeks in Doha in a luxury St Regis hotel.

"We continue to invest in the area with the exciting recent openings of Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, Doha and Opal by Gordon Ramsay, Doha at St Regis," a spokeswoman for the group said without offering an explanation regarding the closure of the Maze, which launched only two years ago. She said the decision to close the restaurant was taken in March.

Some restaurants on the Pearl-Qatar reported that they lost more than half their turnover after the alcohol ban was introduced in December.

The Pearl-Qatar was designed as a dining, marina and residential destination and is described by its developer as the "Riviera Arabia".

Several Ramsay restaurants have closed in recent years, including in Cape Town and London, after losses for Gordon Ramsay Holdings during the global economic downturn pushed the company to the brink of bankruptcy.

Restaurants launched by Ramsay Holdings just before the onset of the global economic downturn as part of an ambitious international expansion plan quickly ran into trouble, resulting in a loss of £4.3 million (Dh24.4m) in the year to August 2008. The restaurants in the St Regis Doha are headed by the Michelin-starred chef Gilles Bosquet. One offers fine dining, while the other, Opal, has a more relaxed bistro-style atmosphere.

"A great deal of effort and detail has been put into perfecting these culinary experiences for both casual diners and gourmet enthusiasts, and we are confident that these restaurants will elevate Doha's fast-growing dining scene to the next level," said Tareq Derbas, the general manager of the St Regis Doha.

In an attempt to get this thread trainwreck back on track...

Maze had some great offers and it is a shame it closed down. Their 140 Riyals for a 3 course lunch was an amazing deal, considering the quality food they had. Unsurprsisingly, most of these restaurants rely on alcohol sales to bridge costs of running such an upscale venue. Quality ingredients are shipped in directly for a restaurant of that nature. There is much more cost involved than your typical Applebee's or Chili's frozen pre-made crap that everyone seems to want to make the comparison to.

I, for one, will miss their lunch special while sitting out on the balcony overlooking the Pearl complex. It was a nice atmosphere.

Shame on the authorities for pulling the rug out from under these businesses. I cant imagine the losses that some of these investors have endured. (Restaurateurs and Property owners alike) Actions like this will certainly make everyone hesitant to invest in the country. Everyone loses.

do you?

We don't care that you don't admit to how much you abuse us, or how much you hate us - because your posts on here, show that much.

A decent debate isn't possible, because everything ends up being derogatory toward the west and again, showing how much hate you have.

I have mostly tried to remain partial and unbaised, but recently, civil remarks and trying to keep the peace has become tiresome, as no reasonable comments are posted from a certain element of this board.

You may think I am being racist when in fact, I am stating truths that people of the same nationality as these posted have noticed too. I don't care where people come from, but when they start having one track minds and being repetitive in their common goal of being derogatory to other users, then I get seriously bored and will start to retaliate, albeit with sarcasm.....

Bingo... I hit the nail on the head!!!!

Asian/Eastern people get abused equally on this forum .. thing is when its on West, you guys take it all seriously and feel paranoid about us .. you have to understand this.. WE MUSLIMS/ASIANS/ARABS DO NOT WANT TO DESTROY YOU OR YOUR WEST !!

I think the westerners on this forum get abused way more than any other nationality. So please, don't even try to make out that you are so hard done by.

The problem is that people here are so sensitive and take things so personally. If you will notice, most westerners laugh it off and make a joke of it (as you will see by my statements above). Where as easterners seem to be way more serious and don't see the humor in anything.

You need to lighten up and be able to laugh at yourself a bit more.

Oh and FYI... I hardly get any trouble here, way less than you give any other westerners, which is nice. BTW... next time you get dumped by a western girl, learn not to take it so personally:-)

Xena.. nothing happened recently.. its just westerners like you who are so ignorant and yet claim themselves "know-it-all" who influenced me to come down to their level and talk sh** that they love ....

Im not going to teach or preach anyone here.. But you need to learn ONE thing for sure.. you cannot just go on bullying people, talk sh*t about their race, nation or religion and expect them to bow their heads in return.. you'll get exactly what you give them ... no wonder you're getting all this sh** unlike any other westerner here

I wonder if the situation in the Pearl would be different if it had been advertised as not having alcohol in the beginning?

There are plenty of restaurants in Doha that do really well and don't offer alcohol, and they are not just patroned by non-Westerners.

I think much of this is backlash from people ticked off at the powers that be, rather than people not being able to enjoy dinner without a drink.

What's due to the financial crisis in "the West"?

Is it Nikki Beach not opening on the Pearl (even though they have opened numerous others worldwide in Western countries)?

Or is it Gordon Ramsay closing down on the Pearl (even though he is opening TWO other restaurants, WITH alcohol, in Doha)?

I really can't see your reasoning here, so feel free to correct me, because it seems to me that the only place where things consistently close down and lose fistfuls of money is The Pearl Qatar.

Cherru you can go for both. I would not go to a restaurant just because it served alcohol but the food was bad. It was a happy combination of both at the pearl for a brief short while.

The true matter of the fact is that vast majority of the people from all over the world who will be flying into Doha to for the 2022 will expect to be able to enjoy alcohol with food and they will do it openly - it’s part of the travelling sports person's package, like it or not! And I'm sorry to say that if the locals don't accept that then perhaps they should consider renouncing the host title and handing it back to FIFA!

The Pearl management should get on a plane and visit the Jumeirah Beach walk in Dubai.

If they could create something with even 50% of the atmosphere that they have there, then it would be a 500% improvement on the current offering at The Pearl.

Whatever happened to the Deux Magot restaurant? It seems like that place has been closed since last year, or am I wrong? And it never had alcohol, it was just over priced and too posh for Doha.

Let's see if the new burger joint livens things up.

Maybe a Turkey Central outlet there could be a step in the right direction?

It is an example of what happens to investment in an uncertain business climate.

As I said on another thread to do with buying property at the pearl, why buy when the laws are uncertain and change overnight. Where is the legal protection for non-citizens if I invest in the pearl? @ Chota... did u even read?

The alcohol ban is placing a lot of stress on the businesses from TPQ. I know that for a fact because i work there.

What the company running TPQ does not understand is that the money in TPQ doesn't come from the locals... it comes from all the foreigners that invested a great deal of money and time to call that place home.

If the alcohol doesn't come back... UDC and the subsidiaries (mostly HDC - the company that has the restaurants on TPQ) are going to be in more trouble then ever.
