Birquini ban in Doha Health Clubs

Amoud
By Amoud

I was calling around to some health clubs today and was surprised that in Qatar women are not permitted to use pools unless they are in a bathing suit. Ok, fine, I am not sure I would want to swim in a pool where someone jumps in in their street clothes but alot of muslim women swim in wetsuits with tank tops over them.

I have seen ladies swimming in the pools in bathing suits with T shirts over and this is fine, but a woman in a wetsuit, or lycra body suit (the only differnce is that the arms and legs are covered) is not permiited.

I can wear this back home at just about any pool I go to, but here, in an Islamic country it is not permitted....

Which one did they remove?

If a 2 piece bikini is banned, just remove any one piece and it becomes an one piece bikini. Easy eh.....

Alexa, I personally dont care of they are sunbathing topless, although my tweenage son may be embarrased to the point of death.

We need to make this a new Social club, the Qatar Buquini Bunch lol.

Alrighty....

I have been trolling around a few clubs this morning (a few I asked over the phone if a birquini was OK and they said no) and on arrival have been told the following:

Intercon accepts it if it is spandex or swimsuit material.

Marriot said sure.

Al Dana club said yes.

Havent gone to the Ramada yet but after speaking to a few people I may not want to go there anyway

I can empathize. I wore my mankini to the beach last weekend and was ogled and wolf whistled at continuously.

Alexa, I also think it is not right to all of a sudden ban bikinis. OK, it is an Islamic country but it is prevalent practise here. Does a bikini indeed dictate your personality or intentions? I think not.

Heres something, how about controlling all the numpters who patrol the place gawking at all women and in the next breath complain about them?

Hey Alexa,

I was waiting for a reply from the manager of the Ramada but havent received anything yet. I have his mobile and am thinking after the 3 day grace period (I understand the guy is busy) I will give him a call, or perhaps just go down there.

I am curious what the clubs will say to me to be honest.

Let these ladies wear what they like. Does it affect your life? Does it offend you? Why do you even comment? It is their custom and life, who are we to argue? I just hope they don't mind when young ladies with great figures go out there and burn. Thanks for being nice.

Blame it on FINA! they have recently banned full body suits and they want more skin exposure.

The bottom line is that many ofthese "clubs" want to cater for a certain clientelle. They feel that by llowing these full swim suits, they may "lower" the status of the club and even put off many Westerners.

Sad, but happens in Saudi also..

PM, actually a little bit of sun exposure is good for you, as your body makes Vitamin D... Make sure you don't burn though... and probably you should get out of the sun after 15 minutes.

Nope PM, as I stated above I wear a lycra bodysuit with a tank over it, no workout gear, no abaya, no neaprene.

Swimsuit and workout clothing are clearly two different things, right?

I didn't know the term "burkini" until I've read it here by Amoud. We commonly call it Sharie swimsuit, in Egypt.

I really think something should be done, because frankly that just smacks of prejudice. Defintely write the Gulf Times, and I'd be happy to PM you the email addresses and cell numbers of the General Managers if you'd like to make a complaint.

Amoud, I don’t know why you called them up first? They would definitely say no, on the phone. I know girls, who go swimming in full dress, without being rejected or kicked out by hotel management. I cannot speak for all hotels though, I was referring to the Marriott. Any place with a private beach in Doha, will allow it with no issues.

Also, there’re wetsuits designed with head cover for Muslims. A woman does not need to wear any tank top over them. It’ll only reveal more of the body shape than without the top.

These are popularly worn in Egypt. The new designs are nice and colorful, unlike a few years ago, they were dull and too heavy.

Please keep us posted.

Hmm, interesting idea Gypsy, and we could invite Gulf Times to do a wee write up.

I want to take my kids swimming in a deceent pool that is actually cleaned every once in a while. My 20 month old loves the water.

That's prejudice. They're in an Islamic country for Christ's sake, how can they not let women in burkini in!?! I'm surprised some Sheikha hasn't had them shut down!

I wish so Gypsy, but alas they have understood. They are deeming "proper swim attire" to be a bathing suit. It is stupid, and now you got me all worked up so me thinks I need to go have this out with some of the health club managers this afternoon.

I called the Ramada today and told him I wanted to wear a wetsuit in the pool and he said no, it is not possible. Same at Intercon and Ritz.

Would it be different if I had a sun allergy?

I can wear this in Canada but not here, in an Islamic country.

Whilst in Doha (only left at the end of January this year) I was a member at The Cabana Club (Ramada Plaza) and I often saw ladies in their lycra body suits swimming in the pool.

Perhaps the health clubs simply don't want ladies swimming in their abayas? (Have seen them do this in the sea, but not at public swimming pools)

By Amoud• 12 Apr 2009 15:21
Amoud

This is very common, and I must say I would be a bit reluctant to swim in a pool with a woman in abaya (its street clothes, dragged through god knows what) but a wetsuit? ____________________________________________________
