Six hospitals say ‘no’ to pregnant woman

A 27-week pregnant woman with premature labour pains was allegedly refused treatment by at least six private and government hospitals across three emirates last week.

The seventh hospital also initially refused the Indian woman, but took her in after realising that she would deliver within minutes.

When 34-year-old Pushpa K Joy finally gave birth at 10pm on November 8, she had been shuttling between hospitals in heavy traffic, bearing severe birthing pains for over 10 hours. The hospitals also refused to provide an ambulance, she has alleged.

A week after the death of the child they had been wanting for long, the distraught couple says they are seeking answers. They have questioned the medical ethics and doctors’ responsibilities.

Being driven by her brother James Korah, Pushpa was then taken to Iranian Hospital that initially also refused but upon seeing her condition and on the personal responsibility of a doctor, admitted her.

James said the ordeal was a “horrific incident”.

“What kind of law is above a human’s life? What is a doctor’s responsibility?”

Jojo, Pushpa’s husband said he wants women to be prepared for premature childbirth and not undergo what his wife has had to. “I could have lost my wife ... someone should have taken a call and realised that a human life was at stake.”

UAE healthcare system has got an altogether different issue. It is extremely short of doctors especially the gynecologist, pediatricians. In fact, people have been requested to cut down unnecessary visits to the hospitals. There problem is not same as Qatar. If such a thing happened in Qatar, it is only for one reason that since she is an Indian woman, so she won't be able to complaints anywhere & the culprits will get off the hook without a scratch.

no narrow escape here either buddy; the baby died, which is as bad as the Ireland case. I'm sure this mom would have preferred to die herself than lose her baby. I really wish I did not have to see that picture of her with the coffin. Kills you a little inside. God bless women/mothers everywhere..his most wonderful creation

Similar case was refused and the lady died in Ireland few days back. The catholic country has a law where abortion is illegal..Now UAE and a narrow escape !!! when will these idiots grow up??

"-a-t-/MM: In Doha, if there is emergency case i.e. delivery time, they will not ask any questions or turn down any patient."

Not true. Al Ahli turned me away.

ok regardless of any mistakes/omissions by the victim/her family, that is a truly shameful (i wish to use some obscenities but will not) failure by the medical establishment. it is a black mark on the glitzy, shiny facade of supposedly forward looking and modern countries.

i usually stick up for the gulf countries when fellow expats criticise things here; but I do believe this would not have happened in the UK or the US..i once got this swelling on my tailbone in the UK, woke up with intense pain next morning..walked into the nearest A&E..the nurse only asked what the scene was, noticed my tear filled eyes and they immediately had me admitted, treated and on my way home within no time..free of charge..not to mention the kind district nurse who visited me for a month at home to repack my wounds till i was all good and new..i still feel grateful i was in the uk when that happened..

Mimi says this is the scene in Qatar too; if so, then these guys need a priority check too..the malls and metro can wait; please first reach a level where a woman can have a baby when she's ready to..seriously, poor lady/mom..bless the dear soul

and to imagine the poor, tired and helpless woman had been shuttling between hospitals in heavy traffic, bearing severe birthing pains for over 10 hours.. Could the doctors or hospital staff not see that the woman was in trouble and to imagine that they turned her away at six hospitals. Something must be terribly wrong somewhere

Doesn't work that way here Brit. Once you get in your third trimester you need to be registered at a hospital in order for them to take you, and you have to have met your delivering doctor.

I went into labor 5 weeks early and we had to drive to the hospital in Dubai where we are registered, because no hospital in Abu Dhabi would take us. If you want to deliver in Dubai and live in Abu Dhabi they tell you to register at a place in AD in case of emergencies.

Agree with Cherukkan, not sure why she didn't register after her fifth month if she was at risk.

I recall instances in Saudi, where people would wait in the car park of the hospital till the lady started giving birth and then rush to emergency o they could be treated and taken care of :O(

A statement from Dr Sunny’s Clinic read: “In a polyclinic setup, a gynaecologist usually takes care of the patient for the first two trimesters of pregnancy (antenatal). Pushpa was not a high-risk patient in the beginning, but after her fifth month, she developed slight fluid increase (amniotic fluid on upper normal level). She was advised to register at a government hospital/private hospital of her choice. The doctor in question also attended all the calls on November 8. Ironically, the doctor herself contacted the relative of the patient who accompanied her to check on her status that too after duty hours.”

I dont know why she or her husband was so lazy to register in a hospital which is necessary for the delivery as she was going to a clinic which does not have facilities.

If you walk into an emergency room in the UAE and your pregnant they refuse to treat you. If you're lucky, they will call the on-call gyno to come take a look at you, if the on-call isn't available, you'll be told to leave or make an appointment.

FYI, it's the same in Doha.
