Two women drown trying to save kids in Dibba

Tragedy struck at Dibba Fujairah when two housemaids died trying to save their Emirati employer’s two children in a swimming pool at a hotel in the eastern town. But luck was not absent as the little boy and his younger sister were saved in the last minute by a European tourist who happened to be there.

The tragic incident took place on Monday, when an Emirati family from the eastern oasis town of Al Ain went for a short holiday in Dibba and left the three-year-old boy and his sister, 2, with the two maids at the swimming pool.

As both children went into the water and screamed for help, their Asian housemaid jumped after them although she apparently does not know how to swim. Her African colleague jumped after her when she saw her body floating on the water.

Both maids died while the two kids, Salmeen and Wadeema, were still struggling to survive inside the pool. A European tourist who happened to be passing near the pool jumped in and rescued both children.

Their uncle Saeed Al Amri blamed the hotel for the incident in the absence of any rescuers at the pool.

“My brother was in his hotel room when he heard screams....he went down and saw the bodies of the two maids floating in the water…he found his son was in a very bad condition while his daughter was still crying and shaking,” Amri said.

He said the European man who rescued the two children also tried to resuscitate them before the hotel management called the ambulance.

Wonder if the lifeguard could swim ?

Sadly have seen similar circumstances. May the maids rest in peace. I hope the owners will compensate their families handsomely for their losses..

and its so ridiculous that the parents are looking to push the blame on to anybody and everybody but not on themselves

how can anybody let such small kids one is 3 and other is 2 near the adult pool unsupervised .... this lead to many questions...but i agree to all parents are the first one to be blamed ....

I think the parents are at fault with leaving the kids with maids who couldn't swim. But the hotel is also at fault for not having a proper life guard. If the life guard was doing his job he could have the kids before the maid even jumped in.

That's BS. People do not drown that fast. IF the life guard was there, then he was negligent.

Despite allegations that the lifeguard was not available at the time of the incident, Joseph Khoury, owner of the Holiday Beach Motel claimed to Gulf News that the lifeguard had been by the pool all the time.

“The lifeguard was there during the incident and as soon as he saw them drowning, he jumped in to help.

“The lifeguard did all he could but it was too late for the maids.

“For the past 18 years we have not had any drowning incidents, the lifeguard was always there and in this case I blame the child’s guardians, how can you leave your three-year-old child go to the pool with two maids that can’t even swim?

“The kid’s parents should have been more attentive of their child.

The funny thing is a lot of this parents expect the maids to be a father,a mother and anything and evertything to this children though they pay them peanuts

If they were drinking and did not interfere they would be doing God's will. If they did jump in and try to save them and the kids subsequently died they would be held responsible.

If the maids were alive the parents and the authorities would have blamed the maids for the kids falling or going into the water. Its ridiculous how the parents could leave their kids near a swimming pool or other unsafe place and go to do other things.

I agree, QDCL, they should have had a drink instead and watch the kids drown.

Good old joe, the parents ARE responsible, but HOLDING the parents responsible would mean to change the whole Arab culture! I don't think this will happen in the coming 500 years.

Damn westerners getting involved in something that is none of their business. They should keep their noses out.

If only this and other parents around here would realize that the maids are humans too and can only do that much and its the parents responsibility to look after their children. Coming up with all this stupid excuses that the parents were busy at other things while on holiday does not make any sense at all. This parents should be held criminally responsible for putting the maids life at risk and for their death

By anonymous• 24 Oct 2012 12:46

... and the parents can continue with their irresponsible way of life.

u r right .... how on earth u can leave ur kids at the pool without checking the safety measures first.

i feel for the two maids ...who were dutiful enough to jump in the pool to save the kids or might be frightened enough to get themselves drowned rather than getting the blame for being undutiful....

A very sad incident indeed......

The parents were so busy in other matters (chatting, laughing, eating or enjoying) and had no common sense as well to leave two small kids in the pool with two housemaids who doesn't know swimming. Poor maids, they lost their lives.

Leaving two maids who can't swim at the pool with the kids. Yup.

I have saved kids from drowning in pools . There were, EVERY TIME, maids who could not swim. And NO parents.

Now, why would a mother and father leave their kids in the pool anyway? And why would they leave them with people who can't help in an emergency?

And why were they not aware that there were no life guards?

And now the maids are dead.
