BBC- Doha officially more expensive than Dubai

academia
By academia

I just saw a report on BBC world that Doha is now more expensive than Dubai (and possibly has the highest cost of living in the Gulf) mainly because of the lack of housing. I wonder; however; does this high cost of living apply to expenses other than housing? What is the amount that an average single person should expect to spend a month on non-housing expenses in Doha? Is it as bad, or worse, than London? How much is a starbucks coffee (just as a reference)

this is an old thread, and I'm sure that other threads have proven that this is NOT true and that Dubai is way more expensive than Doha.

Clothing is fairly cheap. Again whether it be local clothes, cheap clothes or designer clothes, everything is cheaper than most regions.

house rents have increased 10 folds or so in last few years. what are they getting at. building new houses, demolishing relatively new ones....they should rather develop underdeveloped areas into flourishing cities say umsaid, dukhan, they could do with a fair bit of polish. need a few malls, recreation area similar to corniche.. ah well with the asian games gone i dont see whom they are gonna feed those expensive office spaces and residential apartments. They are doing a good job of scaring away the workforce who are having a hard time tugging on both ends where its strictly living vs salary. The idea is most expatriates do come here for earning and not spending. when expenditure exceeds income, its high time we say goodbye.

look at the vicious circle. high rent> high price of commodity> push towards increase in salaries>lesser profit margin for international and local companies

the riyal may turn into yen if this trend goes on. you will end up paying 30 to 40 qrs for a kilo of banana by 2008 or so.

Western style living is expensive.

Gas filling per week might cost you 150.00 QAR.

Go shopping taking with you an Arab or an Indian man.

For clothing & household items you could go shopping in Souq Waqif & Thursday & Friday Souq.

For fruits, vegetables & fish you could go to As-Souq Al-Markazy ( also called Ash-Shabrah or the Central Market). It is near Thursday & Friday Souq located south of Aspire Zone.

Having lived in Dubai, Bahrain and here..... I can say this.....

Consumables, such as general food shopping etc....Bahrain is more expensive.

Rent..... Highest WAS Dubai; but now Doha has Squashed all competition. Average 'nice' Villa here is 16,000 QR a month, whereas in Bahrain it's the equivalent of 6,500 QR a month for the same.

Schooling is the same pretty much in all three.

So it all depends on whether a person who takes a post here has EVERYTHING included, then YES you can save. Otherwise, it's more expensive to live here than Europe or the US in general.

Plus, It is VERY difficult to find good quality items here at a good price. Whereas in Europe or the US you can go to Outlets, Overstocks and buy top notch stuff at very reasonable prices. You can find good deals here, but you will notice very quickly the poor quality. It's almost like the world's faulty stuff comes here to be sold at regular price. Consumers beware.

Ideally one should come to the M.E. with a package all inclusive; and be sure to scope it first before signing a contract. One should not take for granted that you can save until they've really done their research.

Good luck to prospective expats. :)

Yes, it is expensive here in some things. Starbucks is about 15 QR for a drink. Local food, like bread, milk, eggs, fruit and vegatable can be cheap if you get the local stuff. If you want Heinz ketchup from the US as opposed to the one made in Egypt (there is a taste difference!) you will pay about 12 QR as opposed to 4 or 5. Eating out can be expensive depending on where you go. Applebees sampler platter for example is 50Qr. You should be able to compare that with in the US! If you go to restaurants that are not chains, it will be much cheaper.

That said, housing should be included in your package. Petrol is cheap, even car insurance is cheaper than in North America. Overall, you have more disposable inncome and generally people lead a better life and can save more living here.

Good luck with everything!!!

out here is really high! I mean i know we all save on petrol and taxes and thats amazing but the day to day living is expensive! food for one thing out here is really expensive, fresh meat and fresh veggies can be really costly, the cost of alocohol its higher and dvds and such! we dont get offers out here such as buy one get one free, and huge sales where you can get things really cheap. Clothes too cost more such as next and topshop. decent books cost a fortune and are so hard to find! i could go on! its expensive to live out here, when you look at what you spend your money on each day - you would have a shock!

I am considering a post in Qatar, I am in the salary negotiation phase. I have seen posting vary between 15,000 to 35,000 for salary requirements. My job would be a senior manager in a retail environment. Any ideas for comprable salaries. The job and city seem appealing to me and I don't want to lose out on a great opportunity. I am married with 3 kids. help with schools would be appreciated.
