Art or Voyeurism ..

Especially for Baldrick and the photography Club!
The National Portrait Gallery has just awarded its 2010 Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize to the following shot of a 14-year-old American girl hunting in South Africa. I must say, the portrait is superb – full of colour and imagery.

However, some of the other entries, especially one entitled “Portrait of My British Wife” may be termed explicit.

So, whilst realising that art is subjective – where do we draw the fine line between voyeurism and art ?

Or Should we ?

Na it's still art, look at the opinions it's created. She is actually very pretty until your eyes scan down. Then you think cosmetic surgery should be an option. But it's still art.

TB lets do shooting one day?....whatever happened to the shooting group FU was to start?

By mjamille28• 10 Nov 2010 11:54
mjamille28

TB, free lessons? :P

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:53

MJ I can teach you. I used to belong to a rifle club, and was quite a marksman. Never killed anything though (well not by shooting it anyway).

TB aint a cracking shot, i saw the crack though....

By britexpat• 10 Nov 2010 11:52

This was actually my point. I love going to galleries etc, but having seen the photograph, I personaly would not categorise it as art.

By mjamille28• 10 Nov 2010 11:46
mjamille28

I for one, would like to learn how to shoot.. :P

By kamote_ka• 10 Nov 2010 11:44
kamote_ka

from the point of view of the photographer, iw will always be an art.

it will only differs from the point of view of the one seeing the finish product.

By ramil26• 10 Nov 2010 11:42

im voting for the one with the gun, the wife seems to be needing a different kind of shooting....

This portrait looks great..

The other one is too gross

By drmana• 10 Nov 2010 11:37

Oh My GOD! That's definitely not an art.....not at all in any sense. Ewwwwww.........

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:30
timebandit

Blimey JM.... just seen it as well.... Errrr..... Gosh.

By anonymous• 10 Nov 2010 11:27
anonymous

Good answer Time Bandit ;) She's probably a rancher Drmana, so she's probably been shooting before she could walk. I think there might be an age limit on purchasing a weapon, probably 18, but not on using one.

By anonymous• 10 Nov 2010 11:26
anonymous

Unless I see the other photo I will reserve my comment...

...OMG just saw the pic.... that is not wife ...looks more like a husband down there ;)

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:25
timebandit

Back on subject.... a cracking shot. Errrr.... I don't mean she was a good shot, I mean the photograph is awesome.

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:24
timebandit

This is SA we are talking about dramana, she has probably already shot and killed at least 2 muggers by now.

By drmana• 10 Nov 2010 11:22
drmana

Lol TB....just wanted to know whether minors can go hunting as well which would definitely need use of firearms. If no legal age for hunting, there must be one for use of firearms.

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:20
timebandit

dramana you ask her, I'm not going to. There is no way I would want to mess with her.

By anonymous• 10 Nov 2010 11:19

I don't think there are legal hunting ages....

By timebandit• 10 Nov 2010 11:19

Photography is always art in my mind, no mater what the content it will always make a statement.

14 year old girl and hunting??? Is it legal?

Art is different things to different people. As long as it's not breaking any laws (i.e. nude pictures of children or torture of animals) then it's up to each person to decide.
