Jenni, I've lived here going on two years and find it very safe, with the exception of traffic. I'm divorced and am trying to bring my kids over here (elementary and high school age), but am going through the convince-my-ex-wife-that-it's-safe routine. I figure that if I'm willing to bring MY kids over here, it's safe. The experiences your kids will enjoy here will be immeasurable. Good luck!

the US government has something against the middle east anyway ..... I have lived in the US for 2 years and I locked myself at home after dinner. Maybe they should get off their ''american dream'' urban myth, coz it doesn't exist. I am still trying to figure out what being american means ...

Day to day, especially for families, it is massively safer than USA and indeed Europe. The roads are a bit wild - buy a car with good safety stats. However, the main problem is that you will be living in a police state, and that can get very scary. Most people do not give enough thought to this side of it, and often do not even know. Trust I missed how secure and safe I was when I was at home (Qatar).

It's so safe and secure and don't mind the American embassy warnings they have to do so as their right to protect their citizens.

I am sure you heard lots of things about radicals and the Middle East, however non of that exist in Qatar.

I hope you'll enjoy your stay in Qatar and I'm sure the American community here in Qatar would help you a lot!

Thanks for the response. Sorry to trouble you. Right after I posted that I started going way back on earlier posts and stumbled on that. It sounds like cycling is not a big thing in Qatar.

Feeling lazy so here's a copy of an earlier post.

There is at least one group of seriousish cyclists that I've seen out on Friday mornings. They look Philipino to me. The number of westerners who cycle regularly is probably in single figures, and they're mostly to be seen on mountain bikes or ATBs alone or in twos.

The best shop for quality cycle stuff here is Skateshack so the guys there might know something, though I haven't seen any club notices there. tel(974)4692532.

Cycling here is generally not pleasant, except on Friday mornings, but it can be done. I used to commute occasionally and the only reason I've given up is that the roadworks around my home create very narrow lanes of impatient drivers and I kinda lost my nerve. A few South Asians cycle everywhere but the accident rate amongst them is apparently quite high.

I might be moving to Doha this summer if I decide to take the teaching job I've been offered. You mentioned your wife biking. I am a serious cyclist and I would certainly like to continue doing that.

Where do you live? What does she wear? I assume that being a woman I can't wear my usual (American) cycling attire, right? I would really appreciate any thing you can tell me because I'm trying to decide if I want to move to Qatar if cycling is going to be a problem and if it's worth it for me to bring my helmet and other gear.

I would not likely ship my bike. Is finding a bike shop difficult?

Kidney stones are treated in Qatar and pain killers (injections if need be) are available. I'm not sure if they have the machine yet that vibrates the stones to pieces. I had stones and at that time they didn't have it.

Just make sure you drink plenty of water.

I'm not sure how the rant about killer bees has anything to do with anything, but it did make me laugh :)

There is nothing wrong with asking about safety, I had similar questions and concerns before moving here from the states in Oct. 2004. If you move here, in the beginning you'll be wary of things, but as time goes on you'll realize that things are relatively safe.

Make sure to bring along all of that killer bee safety equipment that the US government convinced you to buy directly from them though, because it will come in handy against these giant killer camel flies. They're bigger and meaner than those puny horse flies in the states, so don't forget to bring the full beekeeper suit and you'll be safe as can be :)

from personal experience(not with kidney stones!) but with something just as painfull i would like to assure you that they do subscribe what you need ...have no worries....lili.

I CANNOT BELIEVE THE US GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO RAISE TAXES FOR EXPATS! What is up with that? My husband and I are coming to Qatar to try to save money from paying taxes, it is like you cannot save in the U.S., and now that want to tax you when you are not even working or living in your homeland? I am calling my congressman Monday morning, I am TIRED of taxation without representation!!! Does anyone know how much there are suppose to be raising it because the last time I talked to the IRS they told me the first 80,000 USD was not taxed! Thanks.

I know that this may sound like a dumn question, but as my Mother has always told me that they are no dume questions. Lets take for instance if one has a kidney stone and is in severe pain will they be able to recieve pain medication over there, because I noticed that you are not allowed to bring pain medications with you because they are classified as narcotics, what if someone has chronic kidney stones?

The Western schools follow Western syllabi and semesters.

Megamart supermarket (2 branches) has some organic products.

I have many more questions. How are the hospitals and medical care in Qatar? Can you buy organic food? What are the months that children are in school? Of course, I'm being "tongue-in-cheek", but one of the warnings I got from an expat living here: "The most dangerous thing in Qatar is driving in this killer traffic."

Fear is the only factor that prohibits a person from taking any kind of step. As far as my understanding US media is performing actions or depicting news that will create fear among its people. Let me give you an example. Have you heard about the killer bees that were supposed to come to America from Mexico? They said the bees are double to triple in size then the normal bees. This news has created awareness (bah!!) and helped in turn the government by collecting revenue. Revenue?? How?? See there are shops that sell lots of equipments about safety from bees. So people went and bought them. But the bees never came.They want you to stay in a nut shell and will never allow you to come out. Until that time you will be under their influence. Whatever they say you would believe. Just like the concepts of masons. They wouldn’t let you be open-minded. Unless you get out and explore you won’t know what’s going on out there. If it was not for the brave sailors of the 17th and 18th century we would still believe that the earth is round and we would be still fearful of sailing over the edge and fall down. If you let go of that fear, then you would be able to do anything. And what’s better than experiencing a life with the entire family no matter who you are?

Safety in qatar is the last thing you might worry about, american live here better than they do in the states, so don't worry about safety, worry about how you are going to enjoy your time.....because its really boaring over here......

Qatar is a very safe place, American or not, besides, the American base is here, which can provide all the security you need.

So, in short, need not worry, come and have a great time.

For me, every country has, some good and bad. Just look at the positive, and live life.

To start with there are about 7,000 US citizens in Qatar, my wife and I feel safer here than any city in the US. She rides her bike, etc with no problem. We have been to Qatari houses as a guest and always greeted warmly.

The safety issue is no problem, you are in more trouble in the Atlanta airport than anywhere in Qatar.

Take government issued warnings with a pinch of salt. They overestimate risks.

In the first Gulf War the British Embassy suggested that all families should leave yet were telling business men that it was perfectly safe to travel to Qatar.

We spent 17 years in Qatar in total and never ever felt at risk, even when we were told not to visit the souk! We did and were greeted like long lost friends.

I don't wish to be critical of the US Government but the US Embassy has a reputation among the older expats for over reacting. Go to Qatar and enjoy life.
