american accent vs english accent

By novita77

Which one is better? My other half from north east of england ... first time i visited the place i have no idea what the local people are saying (after 8 yrs and regular visit i get used to it). I do like a 'snooty' londoner accent. Very easy to understand :-)

American accent is fine by me ... but i find most of our American friend using term 'god d4mn it' very regular. Is this American thingy thing or what?

Aussie accent on guys is hot! French/Italian is too but it has to be a deep voice, not sqeeky...that would be just annoying. Lebanese accent is sexiest among the arabs (and I'm not saying that cause I'm lebanese) but it's true!

Oh and about french...whatever u say in french sounds romantic!

Is virtually the same as the Liverpool accent, called "Scouse".

A long time ago Liverpool had a Lancashire accent, what some of you would recognise as a north of England accent.

Then a lot of Irish moved to England during the potato famine and many of them stayed in Liverpool.

The Irish accent mixed with the Lancashire accent produced the scouse accent.

There have been times when I have been speaking to someone and they have asked me what part of Ireland I come from.

I try not to let my accent some out too strong as it can sound horrible, but I like the mix in it.

Even today you can be in Liverpool talking to really strong scouse accents the drive for 5 minutes to sonewhere just outside Liverpool and they all talk with Lancashire accents.

I love England for that.

Wealso tend to roll al of our words into one.

Example;

"Do you know what I mean?" will come out as;

"J'noworrameen, like?"

The funniest thing I have heard Scousers say is.

"They don't talk like we do though, do they thouhg?"

It sounds like this;

"De don't talk like we doo do doo de do?"

Call me Maninibat!

Lol! Missmoney is right, i had an irish classmate, wow, can't understand a word.

French accent is sexy. Remember French Kiss' Kevin Kline. How'd he learn that accent. He even sang the song "La Mer' - included in the soundtrack.

what, no votes on the beautiful aussie accent? I find that astounding.

I have to say I vote for the Irish accent - despite not being able to understand a word of it. Like scarlett, I just nod and laugh - good advice too, since its 99% likely that they are cracking a joke of some sort.

I still firmly believe Texans wear 10-gallon hats, cowboy boots with stars and spurs on them, drive around in massive cars, slap their thighs and scream YEEEEEHAWWW all the time, (I'm sure I saw your hub do that) swagger like John Wayne, sit round campfires eating beans with the resulting bottom noises, organise lynch mobs and call other cowboys out of dusty bars for a shoot out over a game of cards and generally haven't changed since the West was wilder than it is even now!

one group...I know too many Australians that are loud mouthed arrogant SOBs...but I also know Americans and English that fit that same category...PLEASE don't categorize nationalities as far as the way they speak, mannerisms, or behavior. We all have the way we think about certain countries but if we'd all get past that and deal with people on an individual basis, we'd all be a much happier group!

That being said...Y'all have a good day!

Oi SamyaUK - what's with the "Londoners don't pronounce their T's" comment?

I consider myself a Londoner (born and raised within 12 miles of the City) and I detest hearing English spoken badly. Accents are OK, but mispronunciation not only sounds ugly, it's often not even easy to enunciate the mispronunciation!

A neighbour's wife once said to me (referring to her husband):

"'e 'as a ulcer" That is NOT easy to say!!!!

Young chap in my office used to call 'Cathy' Caffy. I corrected him - he glared at me - "thas waddye I said, didnye"! sheesh

Wadya fink o' dat den? ugh ugh ugh

Mind you, when I travel to 'the regions' in UK, I'm always amused when I go into an Indian or Chinese restaurant and find that when the very ethnic looking staff open their mouths to speak, out pops a broad Glaswegian brogue or a Welsh lilt. Just seems odd ;o)

Accents are for the slovenly ill educated masses. My advice is to avoid exposing yourself to all accents. Those of us who speak proper English should not expose ourselves to the risk of contamination of poorly spoken accented English. If you speak proper English you can preserve it by following the instructions below.

1. Live in a Georgian Manor house in Wiltshire.

2. Do not let people(peasants) from the north of England (otherwise known as Scotland) or those savages from Ireland or Wales into your house under any circumstances.

3. Instruct your servants to receive tradesmen only at your house's tradesman's entrance.

4. Give elocution lessons to your servants.

5. Only listen to the BBC radio. Avoid all television.

6. Refuse to acknowledge that Americans or Canadians exist other than as colonists that are not fit to live in England.

7. All Australians are criminal. Avoid them.

8.Help foreigners learn English by shouting at them.

Follow these instructions and preserve true English.

In Ireland it COULD have gotten me into a LOT of trouble, had I let it...lol They,and the Brits for that matter, seem to be fascinated by the accent...especially the y'all part. Funny tho, it seems to be the ONE word that is easiest for everyone to pick up accidentally! Nothing funnier than a Irish person saying y'all!!!!

the States...Too short sounding, twangy, and nasal..But then again that might be because most of them have a very different way of behaving than I do...very short and abrupt(we call it rude down South, but its not, its just the way they are up there). There's a huge difference between the people in the southern states and the ones in the northern states. All are good people, just a differing of personalities.

British is the best....

London accents are the best... But the problem is only people from London will understand u... When i first came to Doha my London accent was so strong and id get in a taxi and be like take me to "City Centre" in my accent it sounds more like Ci'y Cen'aa" we dont pronounce the "t" in words... and he looking at me like im talking Chinese... But still our accent is the best, good old Bri'ish accent :D

I went back there 10 days later, during the last 2 days of my journey. I was fortunate enough to make a friend, who is till a friend 7 years later. He was kind enough to adjust he accent, appreciating the fact that we were not locals, something that most British don't do.

can be quite funny...I'd say about tossing a piece of paper in the trash and I get stares...my flatmate would talk about "knocking me up in the morning"...I would burst out laughing and I had to explain to her that was physically impossible. Giving someone a "tinkle" was another that always got me giggling. You really do have to enjoy the differences between everyone's language.

Good morning Novita, The American accent on the whole is a lot easier to get used to, me thinks its because of the large number of Hollywood movies. But I must say a good British accent is a great turn on (just watch Liz Hurley in Bedazzled). And some of my fav. comedies are the british ones.
