Personally don't feel bugged about this rule. I was expecting it to be even stricter when I first came and found some expats walking around unnoticed with very "disclosing" attires.
What really gets me is that some believe that their problems will be "resolved" simply by micromanaging how people dress, act, when there are more important things like for example, the increasing traffic accidents rate and the govt not doing anything to prevent it.
well if this rule will ever be implemented it would be funny to see western people crowding the departure terminal in the airport..or some smart people might stay (cos of their high-paid job ) and just follow the dress code quietly. they would say- "I aint going nowhere..i would wear anything they ask me to"
OK, just glad to have a definitive answer here. Top is to be not below the bottom of the collar bone; sleeves must be three inches below the shoulder seam; skirts/pants can be up to seven inches above the ankle. Since the model is showing a form-revealing shape, I guess the clothing can be skin tight, however. I certainly would not want to abuse and violate the freedom of other people!
ooppps! there is a disclaimer.. so women will be adviced to leave the place immediately? the place where they saw the lady in sleeveless or the country???
what if a lady wears skirt? a skirt that is below the knee but above the ankles?
ladies might very well dress for a night out on the town - and where do they go for this? clubs or bars, where in any other country in the world, this dress would be accceptable...
Here in Qatar, locals are not allowed into these places... and if they are entering, and then complaining, they are breaking the law anyway and should be punished for not abiding by the laws of the country...
Actually xxc, in my 5 years in Qatar I would have to say I saw very few Americans, Moroccans, Tunisians, chinese, or filipinas dressing improperly (unless you count at the bars). The ONLY one's who I've seen do it on a daily basis, to work, to the malls, to the grocery store are the Lebanese and to a much smaller extent the Brits.
not only lebanese! americans, british, all europeans, moroccans, tunisians, chinese, filipinas, and YOU... all ladies who come from a lil open mentality countries! anyway I invite you this thursday night out and will let you see the majority of ladies who do not respect this idiot code :)
Most, if not all of the Caucasian women I know follow the dress code... I think you need to lift your sheila and take more notice of things around you.
@ marycatherine, good on you!...if only more expat women would step up & do the same...when this happens,MOST men in the queue that felt the same way you did would be wary of even appraoching the woman out of fear that the imbiciles might turn it around & accuse the man concerned of "harrasment" or some such if it led to an argument & we all know who the law would blindly support in such an eventuality...however,when the person in question is a woman as well,it's not so easy but i hardly EVER see any expat women stepping up when this occurs here...so keep it up! they might actually learn some manners in the process, uncivilized spoilt brats that a lot of them are...
While we're at it could we ask that the men RESPECT women (especially if they adhere to the dress code) no ogling, no inappropriate touching (as a recent poster experienced) etc.
You might be dressed correctly, that doesn't mean one is civilized (and that goes for the ladies in abayas and shaylas cutting the line at the supermarket). Fortunately, being female and appropriately dressed myself, I have no qualms in acquainting them as to where the end of the queue might be found.
sheikatene, I think most Brits and Euopeans ARE following this dress code. It is another nationality that sometimes does not...and are constantly moaning that they are asked "how much" etc.
Generally, All Caucasians are not following this dress code. They are not being reprimanded by the police or anyone coz they are afraid of them. But if Filipinos or Indians, Nepalies etc?? They are even imprisoned and deported. It is so unfair.
I've been Qatar for 9 years. And when I first came, expat women used to dress modestly.Their skirts and dresses never went above the knee. short shorts were unseen.
But now it's a free for all. Honestly i think it's very disrespectful to the culture. Not only Qataris and Muslim expats are offended but many Hindus and Christians from the south east Asia do not have that type of dress in their culture either.
I don't think it's asking too much for someone not to wear a halter top or mini skirt in public.
Show me the evidence of ANY such law. The OP's link is not to the MOI government website.
BTW For those who believe this is some sort of new enforceable law: I am presently in Nigeria and I have a business proposal for you involving the transfer of $40 million. All I need are your bank details to begin the transfer process . . .
well if this country has passed this law then you have to follow the law... if you have a problem with that then leave the country. cos we all know we cant do anything about it.
yeah right! and when they go on vacation, they forget about their culture and their dress code and everything and you can find them dressing like if they are in hollywood. where is the logic in this?
there's no harm in following it. But if you want to challenge the reminder, then go on, I think there are still spaces on women's jail! Lol! Better be safe than sorry! You'll never know when is your unlucky day!
I think catwalking ramp models are far more better looking, and cannot be put to shame...they're trained for that.... this once in a life time thingy....see how it goes down to hyp.....
If we are discussing respecting dress code, how about discussing respecting other laws, such as smoking in public places (as can be seen in the Mall's on a regular basis) or traffic regulations such as driving in the middle lane at all times, driving close behind another road user and flashing your lights, driving aggresively, without due care and attention, ignoring red traffic lights, swerving in front of other road users, constantly changing lanes........and on and on and on.........
The laws of the land are there for all to obey......not just a selected few.
we are discussing the problems.. and that what are the rules...
you said one, darude said one.. so whats the problem.. at least all should know.. what are the rules.. what are problems..
so chill chila chill ;)
and discuss the problem of villagio cenima screen.. sitting in first row, while watching a movie on screen 7 this is not a problem??? that we should discuss, so that people may know and don't go late or don't watch a movie while sitting in first row
I have been to a few local weddings.. They wear such clothes but only among women. They come to the wedding in their usual abaya and shela then go to the cloakroom and once the emerge from there, they would put a catwalking ramp model to shame.. They look absolutely stunning in designer gowns.. backless, sleevles, halterneck, some even braless.. U name it and you will it.. I was shocked when I went to my first ever local wedding.. So I guess you can dress anyway you want as long as you wear an abaya on top.. This way everyone is happpy..
Yes Kareena, who buys all these clothes? I never see anyone dressed like that on the street or in the malls and if they did, they would be so bothered by the usual cat calls or told off they would not wear this stuff again
Any woman wearing a mini skirt with a tank top with bare midrif walking around in the malls.. I do see such clothes on the racks in all the stores though.. Someone must be buying such stuff.. Maybe women buy them and wear them at home or private parties or to clubs or discotheques..
His Highness - it is very rare that I see women dress in a disrespectful way, I have become so used to all women wearing more than at home that I look twice when I think someone is wearing (or not as the case may be) something they shouldn't. And when I go home to the UK I am constantly staring as I am now not used to seeing so much 'flesh'. So, in conclusion I don't think it is as bad as you think - unless you are purposefully going to hotels and sitting round the pool
If you go in any of the malls and see the manequins in the window display you will see short mini skirts and sleevless tops, halter necks and some even baring the midrif.. Just tell me something, why do the shops and boutiques in City center, Villagio and Landmark etc sell such skimply clothes in the first place? Who wears them?
HH--please state the official source for your dress code and explain where it has be authorized by the State. The website you link to is hardly official.
I'll ignore the silly comments regarding the figure for now
@ DaRuDe
No I'm born here and Qatari.
The thing is that expats 5-10 years ago used to respect the country when it came to dress, but now we are seeing major abuses so its time to let it be known
His highness...almost naked people?? OMG...where????? Oh, maybe they are at the swimming pools of the hotels....are they wearing swimsuits????? Shame on them!!!!!!!!!!

Apprently , it's part of an ongoing campaign in an a popular local Internet forum to curb what they claim is unislamic behavior by foreigners !
As long long it's not official or released on newspapers, i say just ignore them.
well if this rule will ever be implemented it would be funny to see western people crowding the departure terminal in the airport..or some smart people might stay (cos of their high-paid job ) and just follow the dress code quietly. they would say- "I aint going nowhere..i would wear anything they ask me to"
His highness, did you do your homework? Please close your laptop before mommy discovers you.
Somebody tell me this is a wind up!
Personally I would have thought pink spandex and green face paint would violate modesty laws . . .
Genesis, what are we to do then????
I see so many beautiful dresses that are sleeveless in the shops...I never buy them because I think I am not allowed to wear them....
Sigh, i hope those ridiculous contradicting dress code rules stops one day :/

Mandi
I heard there is a 500QR fine on wearing a sleeveless top.
And i have seen plenty of locals in clubs etc.
Mind you, to my knowledge only male locals though.
Plus, clubs and bars also enforce dress code...maybe not all, but certainly some.
There's nothing wrong in the dress code or law of qatar, it's just that they don't put it in action.
when in Rome, do as the Romans do...
just follow whatever the culture is!..
there's no harm in it :p.. hehhe
A long hard stare and maybe a slapping by the self righteous.
ooppps! there is a disclaimer.. so women will be adviced to leave the place immediately? the place where they saw the lady in sleeveless or the country???
what if a lady wears skirt? a skirt that is below the knee but above the ankles?
what if an adult lady used a sleeveless top? what punishment will she get?
I got a code, but no dress....lol
The clothes violate and abuse? The clothes? One cloth? Two clothes? Violate or violates??
If it's real then the government should take some grammar lessons.
"Qatar being an Islamic state does not allow female adults in public places to wear clothes that violates and abuses ...."
It does look a bit home made doesn't it.
It's not a law. The OP's link is not to government website.
mazin ofcourse it is enforced by law. Qatar government has decided that Qatarliving is the best place to make announcements regarding every new law.
As for the user blaming the caucasians, thank you very much. I didn't know that Lebanese are Caucasians.
ladies might very well dress for a night out on the town - and where do they go for this? clubs or bars, where in any other country in the world, this dress would be accceptable...

Wow, now thats a huge can of worms...
did anyone find out whether this dress code is actually enforced by law or its just a hoax??
Actually xxc, in my 5 years in Qatar I would have to say I saw very few Americans, Moroccans, Tunisians, chinese, or filipinas dressing improperly (unless you count at the bars). woww hold ur horses! :P

It's the Lebanese who don't follow the dress code. Don't blame Caucasians.
I take offense to your post.
Most, if not all of the Caucasian women I know follow the dress code... I think you need to lift your sheila and take more notice of things around you.

sheikatene--You're one to talk. Your avatar pic is in violation of the fictitious dress code!
Darude is the fashion Guru for Camels.
I know for fact, that Darude has worked real hard on designing and customizing bras and panties for camels.
Knowing this fictional story, he is currently involved on a cosmetic product line for those camelist enthusiasts.
i think British people are violating this one?
Generally, All Caucasians are not following this dress code. They are not being reprimanded by the police or anyone coz they are afraid of them. But if Filipinos or Indians, Nepalies etc?? They are even imprisoned and deported. It is so unfair.

Lol Frenchieman...
i need to take classes first to learn chill...
so you are sending all these kinda mails to me :((
but in dp you look too much decent :p
Show me the evidence of ANY such law. The OP's link is not to the MOI government website.

xxc...who said there is logic? It is about following rules, not logic.Or Fairness, or tolerance.
yeah right! and when they go on vacation, they forget about their culture and their dress code and everything and you can find them dressing like if they are in hollywood. where is the logic in this?
there's no harm in following it. But if you want to challenge the reminder, then go on, I think there are still spaces on women's jail! Lol! Better be safe than sorry! You'll never know when is your unlucky day!
Now this is a Interesting Development...
u hav to chill fst den teach us too...lols
I think catwalking ramp models are far more better looking, and cannot be put to shame...they're trained for that.... this once in a life time thingy....see how it goes down to hyp.....
i wasn't expecting that you will still think about this.. once you checked MOI.. and didn't get any thing there.. then finished...
Will they enforce this same law for 2022?
true... besty! - all laws are equally important to obey hence it is included in the book of laws... i guess...
imagine a doha where every individual local or not strictly follow the law.... tasteless
If it comes from the ministry of the interior, why is it not linked to their website? I'm suspicious . . .
The laws of the land are there for all to obey......not just a selected few.
does this law extend to clubs and concerts.. i was curious... actually they cud have added a pic of the infamous local known for flogging the dolphin.
:D ... respecting this law wont harm.... only help given the starry eyes widespread in Doha.
we are discussing the problems.. and that what are the rules...
you said one, darude said one.. so whats the problem.. at least all should know.. what are the rules.. what are problems..
so chill chila chill ;)
and discuss the problem of villagio cenima screen.. sitting in first row, while watching a movie on screen 7 this is not a problem??? that we should discuss, so that people may know and don't go late or don't watch a movie while sitting in first row
If these rules are genuine. Then, the only solution is to publish the rules in local papers/media and then enforce them.
we are discussing the problems.. that what are the rules...
you said one, darude said one.. so what the problem.. at least all should know.. what are the rules.. what are problems
HH...bahahaha the moral security of the community....
ofcourse it effects as the track gets changed 4m dress to code to smoking warning which is statutory.
they are almost same..
CODE is coming in the end..
so doesn't effect the topic at all ;)
agree... its mean rules are only for expats!! :(((
its mean under the abaya every thing is allowed??
but i saw cases that they even don't wear any thing.. and just wearing abaya..
so they are stopping actually what then>???
sign when i enter any mall. and still i find customers in cafes smoking there.
What happened to that rule????
HH...This information has not been made public. Your word unfortunately is not the be all and end all.
This needs to be published in a newspaper not QL and then demand all are to obey.
i dnt udstand wt u said but 4 sure ur rite so i totally agree with u
This is from Al-Adeid, which is a department under the Ministry of Interior, it deals with the moral security of the community
http://www.moi.gov.qa/aladeid/english/index.html
You can call them for more information about this

May be he have some conflict with a shop owner who is selling all such kinda stuff???
you did survey??
next time i wud like to join you also :p
Yes Kareena, who buys all these clothes? I never see anyone dressed like that on the street or in the malls and if they did, they would be so bothered by the usual cat calls or told off they would not wear this stuff again
Exactly.. So, we can safely assume that most women dress conservatively here :o)
if cloth stuff can be see thru!!!
so no porblem again...
and orders should be via some proper and reliable source.. not like this..
why don't you guys make big posters of it, and place it every where like those yellow robots..
Any woman wearing a mini skirt with a tank top with bare midrif walking around in the malls.. I do see such clothes on the racks in all the stores though.. Someone must be buying such stuff.. Maybe women buy them and wear them at home or private parties or to clubs or discotheques..
Thats well said :p
seems like LP has the record of all these shops whch r closed and owned by whom
His Highness - it is very rare that I see women dress in a disrespectful way, I have become so used to all women wearing more than at home that I look twice when I think someone is wearing (or not as the case may be) something they shouldn't. ignore it guys,
The dress what wear as Qataris is part of our customs and traditions
We as Qataris support the respect of this dress by our attitude toward others.
We as Qataris feel sorry for those who wear this thoub and refelecting the respect toward others.
Have you seen many people wearing such clothes in public ?
These shops MUST be closed!! (Unfortunately most are owned by Muslims).
If you go in any of the malls and see the manequins in the window display you will see short mini skirts and sleevless tops, halter necks and some even baring the midrif.. Just tell me something, why do the shops and boutiques in City center, Villagio and Landmark etc sell such skimply clothes in the first place? Who wears them?
i think the men have to dress decently as well. have seen men with basketball shirts (is that what it's called?) in decent areas. please .....
HH--please state the official source for your dress code and explain where it has be authorized by the State. The website you link to is hardly official.
OK so you mean to say they cant read those instructions on door side every where in malls and hotels?
I'll ignore the silly comments regarding the figure for now

The red X in the middle of the white box looks cool and calm. I hope you have something to jot down about it
Thanks for sharing. I have often advised Rizks about the length of his Lungi. Hopefully, he'll now take heed and spare our blushes ..
i cant bloody see anything, except for MBK's transplanted head...:(
why i never get to see these naked ones.
His highness...almost naked people?? OMG...where????? Oh, maybe they are at the swimming pools of the hotels....are they wearing swimsuits????? Shame on them!!!!!!!!!!
But the figure is clearly a male!
Are you new in Qatar
or are the Expatriates new and landed here today in Qatar????
It means We, the majority of the citizens of Qatar, and many non local Muslims, are not comfortable with seeing almost-naked women in public.
Please respect the country you live in
Does that mean i am supposed to wear a tight cat suit like the picture shows???I am sorry, but that is a bit too revealing for my taste.
How about male dress code? the link is only for females... =(
What do you mean to say?
No it means respect the people of the country
Rizks it means you have to cover your head with the scarf..:)
This is the dress code
wat is this ? :(
