Personally don't feel bugged about this rule. I was expecting it to be even stricter when I first came and found some expats walking around unnoticed with very "disclosing" attires.

What really gets me is that some believe that their problems will be "resolved" simply by micromanaging how people dress, act, when there are more important things like for example, the increasing traffic accidents rate and the govt not doing anything to prevent it.

Apprently , it's part of an ongoing campaign in an a popular local Internet forum to curb what they claim is unislamic behavior by foreigners !

As long long it's not official or released on newspapers, i say just ignore them.

well if this rule will ever be implemented it would be funny to see western people crowding the departure terminal in the airport..or some smart people might stay (cos of their high-paid job ) and just follow the dress code quietly. they would say- "I aint going nowhere..i would wear anything they ask me to"

OK, just glad to have a definitive answer here. Top is to be not below the bottom of the collar bone; sleeves must be three inches below the shoulder seam; skirts/pants can be up to seven inches above the ankle. Since the model is showing a form-revealing shape, I guess the clothing can be skin tight, however. I certainly would not want to abuse and violate the freedom of other people!

I heard there is a 500QR fine on wearing a sleeveless top.

And i have seen plenty of locals in clubs etc.

Mind you, to my knowledge only male locals though.

Plus, clubs and bars also enforce dress code...maybe not all, but certainly some.

ladies might very well dress for a night out on the town - and where do they go for this? clubs or bars, where in any other country in the world, this dress would be accceptable...

Here in Qatar, locals are not allowed into these places... and if they are entering, and then complaining, they are breaking the law anyway and should be punished for not abiding by the laws of the country...

Wow, now thats a huge can of worms...

Actually xxc, in my 5 years in Qatar I would have to say I saw very few Americans, Moroccans, Tunisians, chinese, or filipinas dressing improperly (unless you count at the bars). The ONLY one's who I've seen do it on a daily basis, to work, to the malls, to the grocery store are the Lebanese and to a much smaller extent the Brits.

@ marycatherine, good on you!...if only more expat women would step up & do the same...when this happens,MOST men in the queue that felt the same way you did would be wary of even appraoching the woman out of fear that the imbiciles might turn it around & accuse the man concerned of "harrasment" or some such if it led to an argument & we all know who the law would blindly support in such an eventuality...however,when the person in question is a woman as well,it's not so easy but i hardly EVER see any expat women stepping up when this occurs here...so keep it up! they might actually learn some manners in the process, uncivilized spoilt brats that a lot of them are...

While we're at it could we ask that the men RESPECT women (especially if they adhere to the dress code) no ogling, no inappropriate touching (as a recent poster experienced) etc.

You might be dressed correctly, that doesn't mean one is civilized (and that goes for the ladies in abayas and shaylas cutting the line at the supermarket). Fortunately, being female and appropriately dressed myself, I have no qualms in acquainting them as to where the end of the queue might be found.

Generally, All Caucasians are not following this dress code. They are not being reprimanded by the police or anyone coz they are afraid of them. But if Filipinos or Indians, Nepalies etc?? They are even imprisoned and deported. It is so unfair.

I've been Qatar for 9 years. And when I first came, expat women used to dress modestly.Their skirts and dresses never went above the knee. short shorts were unseen.

But now it's a free for all. Honestly i think it's very disrespectful to the culture. Not only Qataris and Muslim expats are offended but many Hindus and Christians from the south east Asia do not have that type of dress in their culture either.

I don't think it's asking too much for someone not to wear a halter top or mini skirt in public.

If we are discussing respecting dress code, how about discussing respecting other laws, such as smoking in public places (as can be seen in the Mall's on a regular basis) or traffic regulations such as driving in the middle lane at all times, driving close behind another road user and flashing your lights, driving aggresively, without due care and attention, ignoring red traffic lights, swerving in front of other road users, constantly changing lanes........and on and on and on.........

The laws of the land are there for all to obey......not just a selected few.

I have been to a few local weddings.. They wear such clothes but only among women. They come to the wedding in their usual abaya and shela then go to the cloakroom and once the emerge from there, they would put a catwalking ramp model to shame.. They look absolutely stunning in designer gowns.. backless, sleevles, halterneck, some even braless.. U name it and you will it.. I was shocked when I went to my first ever local wedding.. So I guess you can dress anyway you want as long as you wear an abaya on top.. This way everyone is happpy..

His Highness - it is very rare that I see women dress in a disrespectful way, I have become so used to all women wearing more than at home that I look twice when I think someone is wearing (or not as the case may be) something they shouldn't. And when I go home to the UK I am constantly staring as I am now not used to seeing so much 'flesh'. So, in conclusion I don't think it is as bad as you think - unless you are purposefully going to hotels and sitting round the pool
