Its unfortunate that the Americans are not willing to take it sportingly.

linc, a thicker skin?! no way pal, I use moisturizers regularly to keep it silk soft ..:P

Jokes aside, the worst is yet to come from Stewart (although he gained my respect in his Rally for Sanity Campaign) and Colbert...etc. My generation is -to a fair degree- used to but not thankful nor appreciative of those who make fun of their own mothers to get their point across. Not my type.

Where I come from, we make fun of the president-who's glued to his seat against all odds- and the cabinet in our daily opposition press and TV channels. It's not a novelty to dart at the gov. Qatar's rulers are no exception.

FathimaH and Happy Happy--you need to develop thicker skin if you plan to remain sane for the next twelve years. Qatar is going to be critiqued in the media with increased regularity as the WC approaches. Most of it will be unjust, unfair and inaccurate. But when has that ever stopped the press? Qatar asked for the international spotlight and now it gets it. Now it, too, can be spoken of in disdainful generalized terms that are so often employed on QL, such as "the Americans think" or "all of the English", etc. etc. etc. At least when generalizations are made about Qatar they are groups together some 150,000 people who are closely knit by a common religion and language, as opposed to the enormous diversity of the 300 million plus in the US and and 60 million in the UK.

I still don't see why so many people on QL seem so obsessed with how other countries see Qatar and why so many want to believe the world is jealous.

BTW I just saw some of the Fox News stuff. It's rather tame and hardly the focus of the day's coverage or even a big story. If you want to see examples of really harsh stuff look at the commentary from readers on the CNN international site. But then if an American, Indian, English, Pakistani, etc. online forum wanted to find some examples of how ignorant and hateful people can be in Qatar, they can find plenty on QL.

FathimaH, I cannot think of a better notion, I too believe 2022 is a boost on many levels. Originally I wasn't an advocate for number of reasons, but that's my personal opinion. After all, Qatar has been "rushing" ahead anyway, with or without the WC.

Just hope and pray winning the bid will bring solutions to the genuine issues this land has but of course there will still be the whiners..fact is you just can't please everyone.

FathimaH, as for the corruption allegations, I have to admit that my region is inflected and infected with unscrupulous corrupt rulers, but then again, those particular Qatar/Russia accusers need to watch out for their prone glass house.

FathimaH, Qatar has been under fire and mockery even by many expats living on its land. They have demands, some of them are very legitimate and some are arbitrary and unreasonable.

I agree it is shocking but have you heard the kind of insults thrown at Qatar and its people? like it being the most corrupt country alongside Russia etc...Subhanallah! this is just wrong. But I guess many have expected all this and far worse..

By Happy Happy• 4 Dec 2010 18:59
Happy Happy

FathimaH, honestly, I understand the world's shock and not surprised the least bit, especially for many countries and individuals who've never heard of "Qatar". When they search online, they'll drop with open jaws, and that is expected too.

Yep they have..that too in typical Fox style..lol. Really how low can one sink?Being bitter about losing is quite normal for many but to be so hateful as to mock an entire nation, its culture, its people etc.. is just sad. Ah well..whatever!

It seems that too many people on QL WANT the world to be jealous, and that success only means something if others are envious.

True, some are disappointed that their country did not win, but to be honest most of the people spoke to in the US was not aware the US was even bidding. If the US or England or Australia had won the bid, I cannot fathom such an interest in other nation's disappointment as I have seen on QL.

Some of the misinformation just comes from lazy reporters who can't be bothered to do a little research.

Many of the nations reporting of the 'shock' couldn't even dream of giving a bid never mind winning it. I suspect it's to deflect from people realising what a big mess their own country is in.

By Oryx• 4 Dec 2010 10:22

Well luckily my job doesn't involve the World Cup. All I have to do is wave a flag and wish them all the best.

Some of the media reports about Qatar etc are just ill informed stereotyping....which seem very sour grapes.

However if Qatar wants to be International they have to get used to people making all these sweeping sort of comments....England India etc we are used to that!

We don't care what people think about Qatar, Whateverrrrr..... in the end QATAR WON......let's focus of the BIG PICTURE ..

There's a saying in arabic that says

Actually on the Al Majliss sports programme Al Attiyah discussed this. He said something about (my arabic isn't very good) Qatar would have congratulated US because that is the 'sporting' thing to do. Another QLer may be more precise.

The US has a massive debt and a sense of entitlement.

Ditto the UK....

Qatar worked hard at its bid from the start....2years ago. The UK for example didn't and was too complacent.

reading QL i have come to realise that there is such a thing as a bad WINNER! some threads here really are pathetic, such as 'The UAE is jealous' and my personal fav 'The WC needs Qatar!'. A great advert on how to win with dignity eh?
