Qatar 2022: An Insight into a Misunderstood Nation

The news that Qatar has won the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup appears to have been met with widespread cynicism and criticism by The West; from the allegations of bribery and corruption to concerns over the tiny Arab state’s strict laws, extreme heat, and lack of football heritage. Whilst there are clear concerns that need to be addressed, this is a rather simplistic view of what should in fact be a genuinely intriguing occasion.

@ plushed,EXACTLY...the OP started the thread with "a balanced article by western media" when the truth is,it's as unbalanced as those other western articles on Qatar winning the bid, only difference is,while those articles are all negative, this one is all positive but both are a figment of the writer's imagination for the most part rather than actual fact...

this is a positive article, alright. im not a football fan so i have no idea on some of his points. and im neither jumping for joy nor disappointed that they won the bid, but i congratulate them and appreciate their efforts nonetheless.

anyway, this writer has to get some of his facts straight:

"..it is perfectly legal to consume alcohol in private and at your hotel bar" -- 5-star hotels :)

"...it is perfectly acceptable to wear short sleeves and shorts now"

"Kissing in public should not be a problem"

..if he wanted to disseminate information, he should at least give a proper one.

a truly "balanced" journalistic piece lists BOTH the positive AND negative sides of the issue...so while most of the "western media" has been concentrating on all the negatives, MarkyMark here has concentrated on all the positives, some true, some a complete figment of his imagination,NEITHER one is balanced...unless of course,"balanced" actually means an article that is all praise with no exisiting negative aspects mentioned?!?!?!...

You really need to stop assuming that people who don't support the Qatar bid or win, actually don't like Qatar -

Who told you that? Who told you that xxxpat and Gardarene or Qhris don't like Qatar, just because they don't support the bid or keep bringing up issues that need to be addressed?

Stop listening to the insinuating voices in your head RA, they will lead you to insanity - for which you will need the meds that Adey talks of...

of all time - Karl Jenkins' "Adiemus" used on as the soundtrack for the first clip.

Also used on to advertise Amstel Lager beer in South Africa at one stage - how ironic;-P

I'm willing to bet ANYTHING that this twat Mark Mcallister has NEVER lived here & if he has, inhabited that white expat bubble that so many white expats do during their stint here...COMPLETELY unaware & blind to the ground realities...this is an absolutely one sided article written by someone that quite obviously does not have a clue about how this place functions...for more realistic opinions, read the comments below the article...

It's obvious why Zidane & co. supported this bid...because they were paid for it & that's fine...Qatar has the funds, they have the talent & the ability to get the recognition they needed, nothing wrong with that...what bothers me is the writer trying to pass off that their interest in this bid was not monetary...

ANYONE who went to the Argentina-Brazil game knows EXACTLY how the cops were herding people like cattle, how local brats were jumping ques & occupying reserved seats & yet ALL Markymark can come up with is the "luxurious executive seating areas"??? someone should tell this twat that majority of the fans are those who sit in the regular stands...who don't fly first class & stay @ the Ritz...this is the common man's game, something this writer has no clue about...

Yes it's "perfectly legal" to consume alcohol in private or in hotel bars but he conveniently leaves out that ONLY five star hotels have bars, the rest have had their licenses revoked & that the majority of people can't afford to go to the Sheraton or the Ritz eveytime they feel like having a drink...

"kissing in public should not be a problem"??? is this guy on drugs? oh wait,he must be if he's saying stuff like this...honest question, can you & would you dare kiss your spouse in public here in Qatar?...

The heat issue, once again completely avoiding the issue of the heat OUTSIDE the stadiums...

All in all an absolutely rubbish one-sided biased article...dare i ask,how much was Markymark paid or how much is he expecting to get paid?...

Selective memory much?

There has been an outcry in the world media about the behind closed doors treatment of the former leader of the Army that led that victory.

Not press allowed, no open trial, and no perspective has made the media very supportive of ordinary Sri Lankans and poured disdain on the way the government is hiding his trial.

What are the bigger countries claiming they can do better? Democracy? Because they have a point....

Good article. On the WC Qatar 2022 official website, communications between Qatar and the world will help ease legitimate concerns associated with Muslim countries.

About the heat, FIFA has the option to move the date to Nov/Dec of the same year, why not?

really shows that they are jealous for losing in the WC 2022 bid. who cares what most important qatar win the bid and they totally deserve it.

This is another good article but it is in Spanish.

Basically the former President of Brazil, da Lula is congratulating Fifa for decentralising football.
