More UK attacks on Qatar 2022

frenchieman
By frenchieman

These are some highlights from today's issue of The Sun--the top-selling English daily.  The article is a feature for the Sunday edition and it lays out a lengthy case against Qatar hosting the 2022 World Cup.

Is it jealousy or are there some legitimate points here?

Should Qatar host the 2022 World Cup?

STEPPING from an air-conditioned taxi on to the grey, sun-blasted sand, the desert air hits you like a furnace.

It's a suffocating 46°C and stiflingly humid.

Within a few seconds I am bathed in sweat. A dozen energy-sapping steps later I'm beginning to labour.

Yet in 11 years' time this month, the planet's greatest footballers will line up here in Lumail, Qatar, at a gleaming new stadium - with promised air-conditioning - to play in the World Cup Final.

While many fans across the globe could understand the 2018 World Cup going to a proud footballing nation such as Russia, FIFA's 2022 choice left many baffled.

Qatar, bordering Saudi Arabia and across the Persian Gulf from Iran, has never played in a World Cup and is 94 in FIFA's rankings - just above Sierra Leone and Iraq.

Qatar's successful bid, apparently against the odds, led to suggestions of corruption - something the state vehemently denies.

It's a land where kissing in public is frowned upon and the nation of Israel isn't officially recognised. A much-needed ice-cold beer is available - but only in pricey top-end hotel bars if you show your passport. Newcastle's Bigg Market on a Saturday night it ain't.

It's the energy-sapping summer heat, though, that will be of most concern to players and fans alike.

Yesterday Manchester United's stars were complaining of the stifling climate on their pre-season tour of the US. With temperatures hitting 32°C, Wayne Rooney tweeted: "Gonna be hard playing in this heat. Hard enough walking in it." Rio Ferdinand added on Twitter: "8.30ish, Just trained + it was baking hot. We kick off at 4pm vs Chicago Fire. Get the fluids in now coz it will be sweltering out there!"

Only 300,000 of the Qatari population are natives - the rest of its 1.7million residents are foreigners, many Asian construction workers.

The labourers I meet have just finished a gruelling ten-hour shift. They insist they earn just £150 a month and work every day laying pipelines.

Qatar pledged to address its human rights issues when bidding for 2022. Homosexuality is illegal, while Amnesty International reported on foreign nationals being flogged for offences related to "illicit sexual relations" or alcohol consumption.  Visiting the Gulf state in February, Prime Minister David Cameron said he hoped the World Cup would improve attitudes in the region towards homosexuality.

This flor fella doesn't have a clue,i believe that much is pretty obvious by the  fact that he calls everyone else racist when the only one being racist is him!...

@ Bachus, because it's the easiest option...lack the ability to debate or have no valid points to bring to the table, play the race card, easy way out nothing else...it's pointless debating with someone so clueless...

Flor you have just proven to everyone beyond a doubt that you don't have a clue....once again PROVE to me where I made a racist remark, you WON'T because you CAN'T simple as that, you make a baseless statement which you now cannot back up so I don't expect to see a response from you. And you still haven't answered my questions before, when have I ever said there should be a re-bid for the WC?  Man up and answer the questions if you have the guts....

Flor, the more I read your post the more confusing it is. Are you trolling or just speaking complete rubbish? The topic of this forum was asking if the article has any valid points. You turned this into some personal crazy ranting, completely deviating from the forum.Oh, and before you accuse me of being racist...Yes i am frm the UK, but I have the same skin as you! and if anyone has been racist, its you. You are the one that has stereotyped other QL members, refering to their 'culture' as their shortcomings. Your arguments are completely baseless, now stop being silly. You obviously dont have anything with substance to say on the topic, so stop using these silly one-liners or make ridiculous accusations...let it go. Cige Na?

How is it racism to say Qatar is unlikely to develop the infrastructure needed to host a successful WC in 2022?  Or that it is too hot in Qatar?  FIFA's own report said this in its assessment of the bids, but the committee decided to award it to Qatar anyway. And what's the deal with people on QL who always resort to calling someone a racist if they don't like the criticism or start loosing an argument?

review all your comments even not in this thread but all other threads that involves discussion with WC and if you cannot see the "bad" words you have used before and up above here, I rest my case on your unethical manner of debating!.But I know that those words are part of your life already so you will deny any badmouthing because in your cultures, those bad words are just normal words.  So just be considerate for other cultures like us who consider it as still bad words! ANd you are a New Zealander, so I presume you have a different skin color as mine (and it affects your comments when you deal with me, just like so many others here).  Of course they will deny it but ...........

Wow, I am amazed this topic is still going as it has obviously turned into a personal bashing topic.

I personally don't care who hosts it. What I do care about is the Human Rights Committee looking into the conditions and safety of the millions of workers they need to bring into Qatar to get the whole country ready for 2022.

I want the so called 'civilized' World to make sure that Qatar pulls it off without abuse and exploitation. Now THAT is the main issue!!! Can they do it? Let's discuss this instead - in a constructive way please!

the UK are not sourgrapes on Qatar winning the bid for 2022, since Europe was not even eligible to bid for 2022! So it doesn't make any difference to their own bid. They question Qatar winning, due to the strength of their proposal! In a team of US, Japan, S Korea, & Australia. Qatar arguably had the weakest proposal, in terms on Infrastructure, # of stadiums, stadium capacity, climate, transportation etc. So when Qatar gets the same number of votes in the 1st round as all those countries put together...this tells you something maybe is not right. The UK lost their 2018 bid even though they had the strongest proposal in their group, the UK is ready to host the WC today! we dont have to do hardly anything to our stadium or infrastructure its all there, wembley 90k capacity, old trafford 75k, olympic stad 80k, emirates 60k etc. Yet the UK had the least votes? so maybe there might be truth in the corruption claims or maybe not. But Qatar has won it, and I wish them the best...but in my humble opinion...it should be switched during winter period rather than summer

By akoahong• 27 Jul 2011 16:39

its not about homosexual rights, or the booze. The climate is the big snag, its not recommended to walk let alone plays sports in this weather! I personally dont care who host, you have to think about the all fans, spectators, media etc that will be coming to Qatar too. Most ppl leave during the summer cos its too hot, so what will you be expecting ppl to do during the day when the matches have not started yet? stay in room? go shopping mall?. The most simple solution is to move the games during the winter period. Frankly I dont see that as an issue for the european countries, it will a one-off event that at the most will occur once every 4 years. Beside nobody wants to play or watch football in england when its -5 degrees outside. Most european football clubs also take a winter break. So all this will mean is that each country fixtures will be extended for a few weeks during the summer! Besides football domestic fixtures vary from country to country so someone poor country will always have to reschedule when WC comes along

Exactly Flor.  There are always naysayers before these events.  Remember the lead up to Athens - the whole world was questioning whether they could pull it off.  Same with Salt Lake City.  South Africa got its share of critics too.If Qatar wants to host world events like this, then being criticised comes with the territory.  It's getting pretty boring listening to how this is all some western, anti-arab, anti-Islam, pro-Israel zionist conspiracy. If you don't want the world watching your every move, then don't bid for world events.  But if you do, then you have to deal with the criticism.  For the next 11 years.

Cheers TC.But I don't think the UK is making it into a nightmare.  The nightmare is the bad press Qatar is getting as its labor practices are exposed and the attacks on Qatari culture that are likely to come as Qatar is increasingly placed under the microscope as the WC approaches.Personally, I couldn't care less who hosts 2022, as I've said before.  However, I think the cultural implications for Qatar have been fascinating to watch.  It will be interesting to see how different Qatar is culturally in 2022, if it retains the right to hold the contest.

At the end of the day, the gays in Qatar have it much better than the labourers anyway.  Qatar rarely arrests men for homosexual activity (and from what I've seen and heard about, is widespread).  Yet it wouldn't hesitate to arrest an Indian or Filipino for having straight sex.  At least the UK press is willing to mention the plight of the Asian workers who are being exploited in Qatar.  Underpaid and overworked Indians, Nepalese, Bangladeshis could only dream of having the rights and paypackets of British construction workers. In any case, it is the weather that will be the biggest stumbling block for Qatar.  That and the stench of corruption that led to Qatari Mohammed Bin Hamam being banned by FIFA for life. The Qataris better get some good PR staff on a retainer to try and get the public behind their bid, before public pressure sees it stripped of the event and awarded to another country.

If you consider human rights of poor labourers then who will construct the stadiums? If you give freedom and proper wages then people will not be ready to work in this hot sun. It is good idea to keep them as slaves with draconian laws. And you always get people from asian countries who can be shown beautiful dreams of Gulf and pushed in to salvery.Any way no country will raise it voice becouse they also can be bribed like FIFA. when their people toil in sun embassies will keep mum.

Its a good idea to make more draconic laws and when ever anyone raises voice we can always tell we know the problem of labourers and working to rectify it.

Cant see that it really matters WHAT the UK PM says or indeed what its leading Murdoch tabloid is spouting outside of the UK. This is just journalism and politicians pandering to the 'popular" consensus and it will go on for years.

Losing the 2018 bid with such a loss of face was a kick in the balls to the footblling population of England and it will take years for them to recover as it will for the FA to re-establish any credibility they may once have had in the eyes of both FIFA and the footballing world generally. Frenchie, there will be no time limit to those odds. As soon as there are any other developments it will change again. Setting those odds, is as good as saying they are not taking bets anymore. These are the sort of odds a horse gets that never loses!!!Whilst Qatar will surive a loss of the bid, it will change the lives of a lot of expats who are here because of the coming boom in development. Will Qatar continue to look at such a rapid programme of development??? Unlikely, though they can afford it. Many companies are setting up here right now to 'dip their toes' in Qatar, and you have to fancy this will dry up!I guess this will all play out over the coming months, and personally I hope Qatar doesn't lose it....

As for jealousy - are you having a laugh? As far as people in the UK are concerned - yes they were shocked it went to Qatar but nobody is bothered about it anymore - well apart from Sun newspaper readers and in the UK if you read the Sun you are seen as an idiot. It's a low life paper. As for Israel not being officially recognised; Qatar is one of the few countries who did/does recognise Israel. wether qatar will not host the fifa 2022..they are still filthy rich..with or with out the fifa..this is one thing that the other countries are envious about because this very small country can put gigantic stadiums without batting an eyelashes..

The westerners have never opened their eyes towards the middle east in a positive way , they open it only when they want army /air bases ar they want to loot some oil from the Gulf .

Football world cup  is  supposed to be  played here , not the world homosexual  game , neither sex games nor alchoholic cup . Qatar has promised good stadiums with best technology to control the temperature and the best facilities to play good football.

If you want to come and play and watch good  football , come and do that , else just get off !!! and stop these foolish comments .

As of yesterday the bookies odds for Qatar being stripped of the WC2022 stand at 6/4 through Ladbrokes!I'll admit that most things from the UK need to be taken with a pinch of salt, but still...very worrying.

why will i not love this country?the answer is simple..the fact that this is my bread and butter..this is my means to help my family back home..this is the means i can build my dream home and dream business in the future..if we keep on complaining on the things we cannot change, we have better options but to leave the country..wether you guys agree with me or not, we are all here because qatar gives us something that our own country cannot give..i have so many friends who came from the west telling me that they cannot get this salary back in their home country that despite this place has so many restrictions and a bit boring sometimes, they still opt to stay and work..it's all about respecting the culture..and qatar will not change it's stand for just a few people only..we are the visitors here so we'll pay respect for the host..same thing whenever we have visitors in our own home..we don't want them to disrespect us..

I have a strong Gut feeling Qatar May loose the WC rights of 2022To think of it what we are thinking about is something thats not possible to host You have stadiums GOOODYou have WOMEN NOOOOYou have GAYS NOOOO ( correction you have but u dont allow )You have alcohol ( Yes But the most Effen expensive things ever ) For all you people who dont drink I feel bad for you but then again its your religion and personal choice but Watching a game high is where the fun starts and that may never happen in Qatar. About WOmen like someone mentioned. You have no idea what you are talking aboutMEN In Qatar abuse women more than usual Eve teasing to highest level why????????????? Because they dont see them too often they are always covered or one hot chick has 10 men wid her why coz shes showing something YOU guys have no idea what real life is. And about the guy who is said if you dont like it get out of here !!! excuse me Mr. We do not wanna be here its out faith and Money that got us here BUT I personally think Qatar would not be the best place to have the world cup.

i'm not against to alcohol nor in homosexuality..you can't blame these gay people if they were born that way..i have so many gay friends and even have a gay best friend..they are more loyal than any "normal" guy or girl friend..they will stand beside you no matter what happens..with regards to alcohol..as long as what ever you drink will be put in the tummy and not in the head then, everything's is fine..and as a respect in the HOST country, drink in proper places (bars, hotels)..we can;t do anything about it since this is a muslim country..if we don;t like living here and follow the country rules, best way is to pack your bags and leave..khallas!

of what a WC event is?  Is it really a sporting event or an EXCUSE to do "crazy" things?

Who says it is not recognized here? Jerusalem is the third most important Islamic site after Mecca and Medina so obviously since it is the capital of Israel, how can it not be recognized????

That many gay couples won't be able to attend the world cup in 2022 that is why this issue is brought up.. Come on, you cannot expect a gay couple sitting among the audience in one of the stadiums in Qatar openly kissing and hugging each other..

I am against the homosexuality and alcohol. It doesnt make any sense. But I support the articles argument against the poor underpaid labourers. Most of the construction workers are hardly payed about 500QR to 1000QR in a country where everything is overpriced. They are also humans, they also work hard. Where are the human rights?

wow... UK's most respectable person is also in favor of homosexuality... :/

why this shud be the part of bid, and a country must allow homosexuality if they want to host football?

up to 2022, how much more cases will open? may be they will say, there is no x-rated qatar base movie, they are not allowing sex in public, There are no gay clubs,

And for israil, better to wait till 2022, whether it will be present or not on map of world...

For population, they are working, hope they will increase some few thousands up to 2022 ;)

For beer, lets enjoy bebsi, dew,7up this time :)

WORLD GAME PLAN 2022,,,,

Wher it is written that world cup will only be awarded to a country where sexulaity, homosexuality, drinking is open. This can be a right of any nation who is able to handle these challenges can host such a mega events.

Is this written in FIFA books that all such type of bullshits are required to be in open market. We have here sisters, mothers and respectable women who is particepating in almost all fields of buisness. Here the honour of women is respected by all humans, no body can rape any women,,, no body can come out drunk on roads naked,, what do you think is it a respect to human most sensitive part or we consider that a dis respect.............for god sake stop this bull shit propoganda and let qatar to concentrate on main core arrangements of the FIFA which they have committed,,,

Once again request to please discourage such a media and appreciate Qatar governmant and nations efforts towards the success of the forthcoming 2022 mega event.

Qatar will relax its rules on homosexuality.. Hahaaa.. This is the joke of the century.. No Arab country, I mean none of the GCC countries would ever be tolerant towards homosexuality.. No matter what the human rights activists do or say, there are some things which would never be acceptable in such a society.. They might even allow alcohol one day in public restaurants and maybe one day you might be able to buy alcohol openly without a permit but as far as homosexuality is concerned, Qatar is never going to change its stand on it.. It is condemned and it will always be condemned in an Islamic society. David Cameron please keep on dreaming...

Personally, I'm indifferent to the outcome, but I am finding the battle in the world press interesting.  Especially interesting in this one is the increasing pressure for Qatar to relax restrictions on alcohol and homosexuality as part of the WC 2022.
