Ooredoo’s Alrabaa Join Families at Ramadan Cannon
Ooredoo’s “Alrabaa” (Friends) joined the families waiting for the Ramadan Cannon in Doha this week, distributing Iftar boxes once the cannon was fired.
The firing of the “Midfa al Iftar” (Ramadan cannon) to announce the breaking of the fast is a very old tradition that is still practised across the region. In Qatar, the sight of the security forces setting up in the empty lot beside the General Post Office has become a familiar one during the Holy Month.
Fatima Sultan Al Kuwari, Director, Community and Public Relations, Ooredoo said: “The firing of the cannon dates back to the early days of Islam, announcing the end of a day of fasting and signalling the Maghrib (Sunset) prayer. It is very meaningful for Ooredoo’s ‘Alrabaa’ and our volunteers to be present to share this moment with the community.”
This initiative is part of a series of community and charity activities led by Alrabaa this Ramadan to highlight Qatari and Muslim traditions and spread joy throughout the community. The seven fun characters of Alrabaa, representing Qatari culture, are travelling around Qatar to bring gifts, well-wishes and surprises.
Excitement is also building Ooredoo’s CSR partnership with Al Rayyan, which enables people to submit their ideas and suggestions for the charity, community and environmental projects they would like to see launched in Qatar. Finalists are appearing on Al Rayyan’s “Ramadan Mubarak” show every evening in the coming week.
The CSR ideas must incorporate Ooredoo’s corporate vision of enriching people’s lives and any combination of the four pillars of Qatar's National Vision 2030, which are Human Development; Social Development; Economic Development; and Environmental Development.
Ooredoo has created special “Sharing Spheres” in Villaggio Mall’s Gate 4, where people can donate items for charity.
