Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil
BBC News 14:51 GMT

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

Now ladies, what say you? :P

You could just solve the problem entirely and not allow women out of the house unless there covered with a refrigerator box and surrounded on all sides by male family members....but who're we kidding, women should have no reason to leave the house anyway.

Instead of one eye veil , maybe its better to ban makeup ,this makes more sense.

You know I just keep wondering when male authority is going to stop fighting over women's bodies and leave us alone to take care of them as we wish. In contemporary time, with the so called clash of civilizations, the body of the Muslim woman has become the topic of the day both in Muslim countries and without. Its getting damned tiring to see the entire whole so concerned over what Muslim women put on or do not put on their faces, hair, hands, feet or whatever. If you read any of the literature when the British and the French first came to the Middle East in particualr you will hear the same old debates that we are living out today. White men, misogynist at home, but turned feminist when their feet touched the Orient, trying to save "brown" women. And "brown" men trying to protect their honour. Enough is enough. I would ask both the sheikhs and their counterparts( such as editors in certain danish papers) to turn their one eyed vengeance to their full time jobs like fighting over oil fields.

Similarly, said cleric could dictate that the women (who decline to cover one eye) should have one ear cut off as a penalty. Because EVERYONE knows if you cut of one of your ears you go blind in one eye, don't you?

And if you cut off BOTH ears, you go blind in BOTH eyes.

You ask me why?

Because your hat would fall down. Or veil, in this case.

By edifis• 4 Oct 2008 21:04

Wow what a brilliant idea, to cover one eye, It will look like someone from the Jolly Rogger mob.

By adey• 4 Oct 2008 19:38

An overheard conversation concerning the said cleric:

"Besides, couldn't the women just wear sunglasses over the outside? They live in a desert I'm sure they wouldn't mind."

"How would they hold them on over the veils, elastic?"

"Well you could stick the arms of the glasses through the eye-slit to hook over the ears... Maybe, he doesn't realise that the women have ears? That's why he hasn't thought of this idea."

:D

Its not implemented and it wont be implemented. This was just said by one cleric , not all saudi clerics.

Speed , what do u mean by their Islam and our Islam...Islam is one and it should be followed from Quran and Sunnah just like Hinduism should be followed from bhagvadgita , Vedas, Upanishads ,etc and Christianism to be followed from bible / Old Testament / New Testament.

Saying theirs and ours would make others esp non muslims get wrong impression...

Islam is one even though these muttaween come up with these strange things and as you know always must be a proof from Quran or Prophet says but if you asked him about that I'm sure he doesnt has one, more than this the Shiekh who gave this fatwa can he force his wife and daughters to follow it nah I dont think so and for sure no one will force someone to follow it.

I think the problem is taking some cultural staff and make it as part of islam.

By SPEED• 4 Oct 2008 02:38

Islam is not accepted by many (not few) Muslims and they follow other clerics or the cultural things ....

So do you some point agree with you the Islam has been divided into many Sects ? so those Sects are their Islam ...

What i mean to say if he is giving fatwa and you ppls don't like it.. then who is forcing you women to do it ? now a days everyone has freedom and everyone know what Islam truly says .. so why to worry about his fatwa or such kind of fatwas ... Don't Worry and Be Happy ;-)
