Slaves in the Arab world

general_disarray
By general_disarray

I'm not sure who is worse - The German gov't or the way Arabs treat their maids?? {see the link below}

It's almost as if the Arab people, who enslave their housemaids and the slave laborers working here in the gulf, have no conscience or compassion at all. I keep hearing that Islam teaches that everyone deserves to be treated fairly and you should love your fellow man, etc etc. However, there are 10 million slaves working here in the gulf area as general laborers or as housemaid slaves. It's not like it's just a few cases here and there....millions of them! I know that spousal abuse is widely accepted by the Arab community, but why is there no big movement by ANY gov't over here to stop this type of thing? Why does no one over here seem to care at all? Heartless?

Why is slavery and abuse so openly accepted and even mocked by the Arabs over here in the middle east? These are the same people that are so quick to throw stones at the west for just about ANYTHING they do, yet they're so accepting of slavery and abuse which is so obvious to everyone. They should be very ashamed of themselves.

Religion ha snothing to do with it. But its happening in this region where everything goes according to the religion, even the laws. End of the day the religion is getting defamed day by day by its own followers.

Khattak well said mate.

Well said, they represent themselves only, however QL is a bashing forum for narrow minded people, where every story has to be associated with a certain group/religion. I almost lost my citizenship in a discussion (another thread on QL) yesterday, because am not a nationalist ! .Although I been told being a member of the BNP should be enough :)

An excellent article. Brings home the true nature of worker abuse which is all too common in this region.

There are far too many cases of this type. The Filipino and Sri-Lankan Embassies in Saudi have hundreds of abused / runaway maids on their premises at any given time.

These people use their power and influence to subvert justice. Their assets in foreign countries should be seized till proper due process has been followed.

Every second day Moslem leaders come up with new Fatwas. A fatwa is kinda setting a new rule for a moslem to Follow. Countries and government have a big influence on those especially at times of war or jihad or any call of duty. "duty... hehehe"

anyways, Never heard of any fatwa that calls for some humanity with slaves anywhere in the arab world.

i think in 2 or 3 generations, this will fade away as the new gulf generations are getting some more education than their parents and grand parents.

According to my understanding and from what I heard with people arab countries are the most worst employer in the world they treated their maids more than a slaves (you know what I mean).

No matter how many times they pray in a day but still there is no love in their heart and no mercy. they treated the person as animals.

Im not againts Islam but the fact we believed and respect our GOD we should do the same to all people sorrounds us.

Im calling all people with housemaids in their house; love them and treat them fairly as you do with your GoD.

Usually that's the case, the more people are obsessed to show off their religion and impose their believes on others, the more hypocrites they are!

not to worry... Qatar has taken extreme steps to allow employees receive just treatment from employers... only thing is the employee themselves must know where to go if they face any trouble...

for example... NHRC, Woman rights Association, QFforWoman&Child protection... or even the Labor office...

they just have to get the information.

Thundorty,

You are comparing Criminals in certain societies (therefore exceptional in society) with the typical mentality of the regional society!

Why maids prefer to work for Westerners here in Doha?

The answer to this question explains the article and why the exceptional Criminal acts of the nations you mentioned are exceptions and not common practices of many common citizens of this region!

Hi WK, yes they might claim so, but I believe they can claim whatever they wish to claim but the horrible things that America did in Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, etc... is not an execuse to do the same to innocent people in gulf. Afterall, we don't take guidance from America's act, we should take ours from GOD.

Yes NIC maybe, and I'm not trying to defend a specific country, I'm just saying this is very common in the Gulf and maybe in other countries as well, even in some Asian, European and African countries as in the Human Trafficking report:

The most common destinations for victims of human trafficking are Thailand, Japan, Israel, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Turkey and the US, according to a report by the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime).

The major sources of trafficked persons include Thailand, China, Nigeria, Albania, Bulgaria, Belarus, Moldova, and Ukraine.

So it's not related to a specific race, nationality, or religion. It's Money that rules everything !!

My point, though a little covert, was that NO ONE and no government is perfect. The Indians and the govt's of the other nationalities enslaved over here, are often just as bad as the slave owners. They broker very bad deals and purposely trick their fellow countrymen (male or female) into coming here knowing fully that they are scamming them out of their money.....and indeed their lives. Be careful when you start casting aspersions upon other countries, nationalities, races, etc. for what you believe is their accepted way of life. I don't believe that the average Arab man believes it is ok to beat their wife or housemaid. I don't believe the emir believes it is ok to stuff 8 men in a tiny room, work 10-12 hrs/day in 50 degree heat.....etc etc.... you get the point. Idiots like deepb and a few others want to blame everything that goes wrong in this world on the US and the Brits. You have no room to look down upon anyone.

It's Indeed a tragedy that's actually happenning in the Gulf Area "I think not the whole middle east", that's because people in gulf are maybe still used to the desert living and Bedouin life style. It has nothing to do of course with Islam as Islam is really calling for mercy, love, and respect. Those people don't even deserve to be Muslims or to be called Muslims.

For the government actions, I believe she can raise a complain at the National Human Rights Committee "NHRC":

WHETHER MUSLIMS, CHRISTIANS, HINDUS, ETC. IT IS MONEY THAT PLAYS THE BIG ROLE IN TODAY'S WORLD. THOUGH WE PRAY TOGETHER IN ONE MOSQUE, CHURCH, TEMPLE, TO THE SAME GOD, WE DON'T CARE FOR THE POOR. IF YOU HAVE MONEY - YOU GET RESPECT WHETHER YOU DESERVE IT OR NOT. IF YOU DONT'HAVE MONEY, YOU'RE A GONNA AND HAVE TO BEAR UP WITH THIS ROTTEN TREND OF BEHAVIOURIAL ATTITUDES OF THE RICH.

That's just HORRIBLE.. The government should step up and make it right..

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with them being born Muslims; they are not practicing Islam. The prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessing be upon him) was soooo merciful with servants.. let alone his habit of buying slaves only to set them free from slavery for ever. Historically speaking, Islam contributed a great deal in ending slavery in long term. Many sins were forgiven only if the sinner set a slave free. Now, since slaves do not longer really exist, the same sins are forgiven if 60 poor persons are fed. These are Islamic rules that serves humanity in general..

I know that manyyy Arabs are really cruel to their servants.. I have no idea why.. that's pure evil.. they need to have lessons in humanity.. They need to believe in their beliefs.
