No night out alone: Top cop to women

Rajat Arora, Hindustan Times

Delhi, July 09, 2011

The commissioner of Delhi Police, BK Gupta, feels that women should be accompanied by male relatives if they venture out at odd hours.

"You can't travel alone at 2am and then say Delhi is not safe."

"It would be ideal if a woman takes her brother or driver along (when venturing out late)," he said at a meeting organised by the women's wing of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Saturday.

"It's wrong to say the Capital is not safe for women. My daughter is in London and she's been advised not to venture out after 9pm. Street crime is rampant in London as well. My daughter has been a victim of purse snatching there," he said.

Activists, however, termed Gupta's statement "shocking".

They said the 85,000-men-strong Delhi Police should be able to provide safety to each and every person at any time in the Capital.

Ranjana Kumari, women's rights activist, said, "This statement from the police chief is unacceptable. Today, women work in various industries and they can't take their brothers and fathers along. Instead of making the city safe for women, he is putting the onus on the victim."

"This is ridiculous. The police are violating the right to life and they can't put restrictions on women," Mishika Singh, one of the organisers of SlutWalk in the Capital, said.

On the rising number of rape cases in the Capital, Gupta defended the police force, saying in most cases the victims and the accused were known to each other.

"I can't go and guard every home."

But Gupta agreed that women did not trust male cops.

"When I was joint commissioner (New Delhi range), I visited Jesus and Mary College, where students told me that men cops were more troublesome than roadside stalkers."

Pakistan would become a democratic country like India.. Government of the people, by the people, for the people. This dictatorship won't get them anywhere. No one in their right mind would vote for Zardari.. I personally believe that if Imran Khan became the prime minister of Pakistan, things would take a turn for the better.. But only if that were possible..

Tinker, I have no problem in Pakistanis like Kareena fussing over India. After all India is their " raison d' etre ". Ours is a democratic country and the media and journos play an active role in highlighting corruption and bad social activities. We sort out our problems by attacking them rather than sweep them under the carpet. As for Mr. BK Gupta's statement I believe there is some rationality. Delhi has expanded into UP and Haryana (both the places cannot be termed as female friendly). Delhi outskirts are dangerous and one needs to be vigilant all the time. Hard to accept for Indians because crime rate was less a decade ago and Delhi has always been a people friendly place - hence the shock.

In Qatar, I sometimes leave home for a movie at 8 and then come home at midnight after a movie and dinner. ALONE.. No one has ever followed me home or tried to act fresh with me. If a woman can be so safe here in Qatar, why can't she be safe back home in Pakistan or India.  A woman need not depend on a man to take her out or drop here and pick her up.. She would be able to live independently..

Some people try to bring up India Pakistan rivarly into everything.. I just posted this article in response to the slut walk discussion last week. My point was to prove that first they were blaming women for dressing up indcently and hence they invite rape and now they are blaming them for going out alone.. Then some Painther guy accused me of being anti Indian so I told him that is not true because I have posted negative news in the past about my own country Pakistan as well .. I am not against India or Pakistan, I just post what I read and what I find interesting.. Indians accuse me of being anti Indian and Pakistanis accuse me of being pro Indian and anti Pakistani..  How can I stuff this information into their fat heads that I am not anti or pro anything.. I am the most neutral person on the world.

Cannot face the truth.. I have said several times that whatever I write here is the truth and nothing but the truth. I am not making up anything.  I guess from now on I should post proof as well.. I guess the next time I speak to my aunty or cousin in Karachi and when they tell me so and so person was robbed, I am going to ask them to send me the proof and a copy of the police report.. Would that suffice Ingenrio?

Everyone in my family from my aunt, uncle, cousins to my distant relatives have been robbed at gun point.. Their mobiles, cash and jewerly taken. My cousin's car was stolen in broad daylight then found somewhere few days later all empty and bare.. We live in Defense which happens to be one of the nicest areas in Karachi and even then all this happens.. Most of my relatives who also live in good areas been robbed at gun point and their houses broken into.. It happens a lot in Karachi.. As I said before, the only reason I visit Karachi every year and I am going again next months is because of the simple reason that I have family there.. I go there to visit them.. Otherwise I would never step in that country..

Kareena has posted a right article and it is applicable to all ladies whichever country they live.

Why should ladies go around midnight alone and invite trouble. Freedom does not mean that you tempt people.

Police is not God - available all the time at all the places. One has to take precaution themself.

.. Well maybe a little less problems on the Indian side because our guys are used to working silently and on the quiet while  looting the treasury and for this they normally have the whole family involved and then when they are caught they have  father visiting daughter and the minster in jail and then the jail warden throwing them a tea party and it goes on and on just like a mini circus.

the man did not say "don't go out".  He said "better to go out with escort or implying not to go out anymore during wee hours".  It is a good suggestion.  If you go out and something bad happens, then you are within your right to complain but never think that you were not warned or adviced? It was a general advise and many would tend to make specifics. Not the same!

Getting back to the topic..

The Police chief makes a valid point that women need to be more vigilant also. This applies everywhere. Not just india.

Thanks for understanding my point of view. I love everyone and I do not hate anyone.. I am a very peace loving person and that is why the situation in my country Pakistan and especially in my home town Karachi saddens me a lot. It is very unfortunate indeed.. Alter Dusty has never been to Karachi so he has no idea what happens there but I have family who are lving there right now and I hear horror stories every day... I am sure situation in India is much better than Paksitan and the Indian police not as corrupt as Pakistani police.

I just posted an article here for general knowledge as an aftermath of the discussion last week regarding slut walk and how some people blame women for dressing up as sluts when they get raped. My point here is that the police once again are blaming women for going out alone.. First the accusation of dressing up in skimpy clothes and now asking them to go chaperoned everywhere...

This is not possible these days... You cannot ask your father or brother or whoever to drop you at a party and then pick you up couple of hours later.. Or expect them to sit and wait in the car outside..

Once again, I am just trying to defend women.. Whether they are Indian or Pakistani or Western..

"Here in this article, I feel the police are to blame because it is their duty to look after their country people instead of telling them what to wear and what time not to go out at night".....

isnt it also the responsibility of the police to  make the citizens aware of the dangers and advice them  what to do and what not in their own interest or do we expect that a police guy be attached to each citizen on 24x7 basis.

I always post artcles about Pakistan as well and that really offends Pakistanis like Tooba and lots of others.. Similary I post articles about India too.. My intention is not to hurt anyones sentiments. Here in this article, I feel the police are to blame because it is their duty to look after their country people instead of telling them what to wear and what time not to go out at night..

Regarding Pakistan and the link you posted, let me tell you that Pakistan is not unsafe just at night but 24 hours a day seven days a week.. Suicide bombing usually takes place in broad daylight and robbery takes place at night and during the day.. Pakistan's condition is ten times worse than India and we cannot leave our house without chanting a prayer saying Oh God, please bring me back home safe and sound..

Not only that, last year thieves broke into grandma's house middle of the night and robbed everyone and took whatever they could carry.

So you see, Pakistan's situation is worse than India because we are not safe  in our own houses.. Our police force is much worse than India.

So instead of accusing me writing anti Indian stuff, please go thru all my previous posts where you will see I have written more stuff about my own country than about India..

For me, both are the same... I love India as much as I love Pakistan because India is where my roots are.. My ancestral home.. I have connections to India for thousands of years whereas I have been in Pakistan for only 64 years..

It is already followed in Pakistan... I mean usually women and girls do not go out alone especially after dark. They either take their drivers or husbands or fathers or brothers. During the day woman may drive themselves to work and some women may go out alone for groceries or to the beauty salon or to drop and pick up their kids from school or tuition but once darkness prevails, you will hardly ever see a woman driving or walking alone on the streets.
