Muslim women dressing in my country

MissX
By MissX

I've noticed that a lot of the Muslim women in my country wear clothes that are quite 'loud'. For example it is common to see a women wearing a brightly coloured floral skirt, with a hijab in orange and black leopard print. The hijab's cover the head and arms and are about waist length. So all you see is a lot of loose material in bright, contrasting colours, mixed with patterns that clash quite badly.

I have thought about it, and I can only come up with 2 reasons why they may dress this way. One is that because they hide their bodies, that they don't really take any pride in what clothes they are wearing because appearance simply doesn't matter to them, or that perhaps because they hide their bodies, they are subconsciously trying to attract attention through their brightly patterned clothing. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or an alternative view?

People tend to be more offended by excessive amounts of bare skin on show than they are by clashing colours, particularly in this part of the world, but in the West as well.

By Amoud• 13 May 2009 09:30

Why do the 2 have to be correlated?

Isn't believing something is alarming a show of concern?

I personally find the reasons why someone would wear something different like clashing colours much more interesting, than why someone would wear very little clothing.

I have done it twice, I tell you it is great. I saved a fortune on products and stylists and I could wash it with a facecloth :)

Funny isnt it, most of us women like short hair but alas the lads dont seem to share our sentiments. _________________________________________________

well said Vegas.

Scarlett, my items of color are usually a handbag or shoes. Kinda makes it all "pop".

On a side note, more alarming than color is ladies of a certain age dressing like Brittany Spears. Yekh.

but I usually throw in at least one bright item to break up the monotony. I really love to see those women who have all the color and patterns on and look like they are queen of the world in their attitude.

You and me both Scarlett, but alas my wardrobe consists of white, black, grey, beige and brown. I guess I am a bit conservative but I did see one sudanese woman yesterday wearing an array of colors and my only thought was wow, it was actually quite stunning. ____________________________________________________

:) I find it fun to look at all the different patterns around town. Have to admit that its definitely not my choice of mixture to wear that as I tend to be a bit more sedate in clothing, but I have the utmost respect for those that wear what they want, no matter how outrageous it might be!!

Scarlett you read my mind. Also, you get all sorts of people dressing in all sorts of funky get up. Some people just dont have any fashion sense, and perhaps because we dont find it particulary appealing doesnt mean it isnt all the rage in another culture.

Perhaps its an economic issue. I mean if you don't have a lot of clothing, you wear what you have in your closet, whether it matches or not. Or it might be that they LIKE that combination. Who knows... or better yet, who cares???

My father in law used to wear the most hideous combinations of patterns but his point of view was that they were all of the same color family...who cared if the combination put your eyes out when you looked at it!

Of course it is their choice. That is not my question. I am just curious WHY they choose it. They can run around naked for all I care. I am interested in the reasons why people do things!!!

Thanks Amoud. And I agree, it is there choice.

By MissX• 13 May 2009 08:43

To be honest I wasn't even interested in it that deeply. I was wondering why they are regularly dressing in mismatching patterns and clashing colours. If you wanted to stand out while covered up, I think there are more fashionable ways to do so, rather than just throwing on as much noise as possible. I see it over & over again so was wondering if there was something I wasn't considering.

Here's an example of what it looks like from behind. Lots of colour and lots of patterns. Obviously my Paint abilities are not quite up to professional level.

The kind of make-up and perfume you sometimes see is surely not permissable in Islam. The gals with the hair half out wearing half the seasons stock of Sephora cosmetics isnt Islamic, it is fashion :)

On another note, just because some people are born Muslim doesnt mean they know what they are doing is not permissable in their faith, and it is their choice. I guess if you put religious implications aside they really arent hurting anyone.

I think I see where MissX and seny0rite are coming from, and it's a question I've often wondered about;

If the point of a Muslim woman covering herself up is so she doesn't attract any attention to herself, why do they wear fitted abayas and wear make up and perfume?

Or is a case of them wearing abayas as a form of national identity, and isn't really anything to do with religion any more?

No problem with what they wear. The problem is what they symbolise. Generally people are quick to make conclusion with references to. And thats where the trouble started.

Every culture seems to have a choice in colors and I think you will find darker skinned people prefer brighter colors, I love seeing all the color, we need more in the world. I respect women who do what they prefer no matter what anyone thinks!

By MissX• 13 May 2009 03:00
MissX

Wow I completely didn't mean to start any controversy or religion bashing arguments. And yes PM, Australia is a free country. Asking questions does not mean I am intending to be disrespectful, it merely means I found it interesting and would like to know more about it. Of course I believe women should be able to wear whatever they want, but behaviour always has a reason and I am someone who likes to investigate reasoning.

I was genuinely curious what makes them wear such clothing. I am an analyst by nature and love knowing what people are thinking and predicting their behaviour. Having never been exposed to muslim women, and only reading about their tendency to hide their beauty and try not to attract attention, I really was not sure what would be going through their minds when they choose their clothing each morning. I could only come up with 2 reasons, so I asked everyone's opinion and asked for alternative views that perhaps I hadn't thought of.

And in regards to the questions asked about me, I dress in regular Western clothing. Shorts, singlets, skirts etc if it is hot, and every piece of clothing I can lay my hands on when it is cold. As for the X in MissX, get to know me a little better and you may just find out.

To be honest though, I am a little disappointed that my question regarding the particular choice of clothing of some women was taken in such an offensive manner. I have no problem with women covering them selves if that is what they choose to do, I also have no problem with women wearing clothing that is very bright and noticeable. But I think some people need to stop assuming curiousity is disrespect.

Senyorita, it is Sunna to wear black. There is a hadith (I cant pull it off the top of my head) that says the Prophet (PBUH) said that color was fine for covering. I will look it up

correct me if im wrong missX, but i think what she was trying to point out here was a case of a lil' hypocrism? (please dont take this word harshly) the whole point of the women wearing black and being covered is to not draw attention to themselves. moreover, this is a tradition to do so.

and now all of a sudden, they're wearing colored patterns or bright colored cover ups.

as to what missX said in the forum topic, i take it that these muslim women uve seen wearing brightly colored hajirabs are young, arent they? as you know, we live in new times, new generation. i wouldnt really say "subconcsiously", of course they know this..they're trying to get in the mix, evolving-- that they put some kind of fashion into their clothing but also not stir so far away from the tradition so much so as to not cover themselves.

my mom wears the most beautiful clothes for a hijabi and she's proud of it...she does it because she's feminine and loves fashion, and she always matches...so it depends on the woman's taste...secure/insecure-it matters not, i think...who knows, why dont u go up to them and ask?

Australia is a very free country. However I think we border on being racist. We don't tolerate a lot at all. Even though we expect to be tolerated elsewhere.

It's an Oz thing. I have learnt to be more open since being dragged around the world by my husband.

People have right to express themselves in their own way & thoughts and dressing is a form of expressing own self.....why should we be probing about it?

If showing the body is taking pride I have seen so many women in Canada with awfully shaped body wearing shorts or sleeveless dresses and wonder what makes them proud about?

I have noticed muslim women even in gulf use attractive patterns or shining articles on their hijabs too. The bottom-line is to draw attention, coz women feel insecure if not receiving due attention of men...:)
