Largest act of philanthropy ever by an Indian

Kudoes to Mr Azim Premji, the third richest man of the country who pledged 2billion USD for improving the rural schooling in India. Salutes to you.

Hope and pray this inspires his fellow billioniores like Ambanis who built a house for $2 billion, paying an electricity bill of $20000 a month,in a country where there are millions still under BPL.

Apart from the much talked about deals in the west,Indian TYcoons are buying assets worth billions in the "frontier" Africa like crazy which inlcudes, oil refineries in Kenya n Sudan, coal mines in Mozambiq to rose farms in SA.Since 2005 they have aquired 79, billion Dollar worth companies across the continent. How many of them ever supported the lessfortunates in the country? .. Most of them have manipulated the system and government to achieve what they have now. The recent Radia tapes was the Indian wikileak..lol. Hope Azim Premji inspires the rest of the flocks to do something substantial for the society.

I'm wondering why many people cannot simply realise that what we see as unwise, unjustified expenditure of the riches (e.g. the $2 billion house) is the perfect way of circulating money. Similar to those who don't like allocating $40-5-billions to 2022. This is how millions find their job opportunities.

it was a pledge;

his money will run out helping Mumbays ghetto alone

@ Ice maiden, like i said,we're talking about $ 2 billion USD,pretty hard to keep philanthropy like that anonymous, especially in India...if there's one guy who'd do it without publicity if it were possible,it's this guy...

Even Narayana Murthy of Infosys... these are the leaders of today....

Some of his quotes:

“Our assets walk out of the door each evening. We have to make sure that they come back the next morning.”

“The real power of money is the power to give it away.”

“A clear conscience is the softest pillow in the world."

Is it any miracle they are leading some of the best companies....

Hats of to Mr. Premji....let the other Billionaires learn something from him than spending billions of Dollars for a dwelling for few people..

Warren Buffet is also a good example...he is donating 99% of his wealth...that is the beauty of being super rich...

Yes, the media/parapazzi does "sniff" out a lot of information regarding the "celebrities", especilly when it is in the tune of millions or billions with a capital B. But philanthrophic activities can still be kept "anonymous" I think.

Anyways kudos to Azim Premji.

Kudoes to him. May he be rewarded for all his good deeds. The world is badly in need of such people. He is setting an example for others & hope they follow him in doing charity.

Ice Maiden . yes there are many, but among these tycoons, if they do, they dont need to publicize it . It becomes news, and how many of those does it? hardly any.

agreed Ice maiden, but in today's world especially in today's India with the pro active media being what it is,it's probably impossible to practice philanthropy to the tune of millions of USD without the media getting to know about it...for lesser amounts & to a lesser extent, yes i agree,LOTS of Indians do it quietly...

There are a lot of Indians who do philanthrophy. They just do it "quietly".It's ingrained in the culture that when you help others, do not beat the drums and announce you are doing so.

This guy is different from the rest of our Indian billionaires,he leads by example...drives around an old Ford even though he can well afford a Bentley or something...flies economy even though he can well afford a private jet...not many people like him on this planet, let alone in India...
