Iran bans foreign cooking shows

Iran's state-run television has been banned from screening cooking shows that promote foreign cuisine as conservatives seek to fight Western influence in the Iranian culture, media reported on Sunday.

"From now on teaching how to cook non-Iranian dishes is banned," deputy head of Iran's state broadcaster Ali Darabi was quoted as saying by Aftabnews, a moderate website, and several other media outlets.

Iran boasts a rich cuisine and cooking shows are very popular, with chefs teaching a variety of Iranian and foreign recipes on daytime television.

Italian, Chinese and Indian dishes are also favoured by many Iranians, while officials warn against the increasing consumption of unhealthy fast food.

Private broadcasters and satellite television are banned in Iran but rooftops are dotted with satellite dishes and dozens of Persian-language channels beam a daily dose of politics and entertainment into the country.

A Copy/Paste job.

if they don't want cuisine that promote non-iranians then they might as well ban all fast food in that country like kfc and mcdonald's.

Woah, WK, that's not true - of Indian TV. When last I lived there, there were plenty of such shows and recipes. Well, if not plenty, a fair amount.

Especially after all the travel/lifestyle channels broke out.

At the end of the day, it's their country and they are trying to protect their culture. What's the fuss. I can't remember watching any beef recipe being shown on Indian television or a pork recipe in Qatar.

Probably they suspected that the cooking containers used to cook pork were shown on tv.

This will defile the viewers :-)

Perhaps they are worried cafes will be built next to one of it's nuclear power plants.

They could call it 'The Fission Chips'.

What clowns!

Oryx - I guess that means restaurants that serve 'foreign' cuisine are also banned (if they ever existed)?

By anonymous• 7 Feb 2011 15:39

Sources say they are trying to come up with a way to ban wind coming in from the west.

After two weeks in Iran, I wanted some variety. Yes Iranian food is good especially that sauce with walnuts and pomegranate....but variety is the spice of life!
