Girls over 10 or12 are eligible to marry!!!!!

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia's senior-most cleric said girls as young as 10 years old can be married, local media reported on Wednesday.

The powerful Grand Mufti Abdul Aziz al-Sheikh said in a speech late on Monday that Islamic Sharia law allows the practice of pre-teen girls getting married, and that critics of the practice were doing the girls "an injustice," reports said.

"We hear often in the media about the marriage of minors. We must know that Sharia law is not unjust for women," the cleric is quoted as saying.

"If it is said that a woman below 15 cannot be married, that is wrong. If a girl exceeds 10 or 12 then she is eligible for marriage, and whoever thinks she is too young, then he or she is wrong and has done her an injustice."

His comment came in the wake of several well-publicized cases of young girls being married to men sometimes old enough to be their great-grandfathers.

On Monday a court in Taif allowed an 11-year-old girl to separate from her 75-year-old husband after the girl's mother petitioned the court, according to a report in Okaz newspaper. The girl's father had arranged the marriage in exchange for a dowry, it said.

In December a Saudi court at Unayzah, 220 kilometres (135 miles) north of Riyadh, rejected a plea to divorce an eight-year-old girl married off by her father to a man who is 58, saying the case should wait until the girl reaches puberty.

Saudi human rights groups are fighting the old practice of children being married off to much older men by their parents and seek to establish a legal minimum age for women to be married.

oh plz mufti saab dont spoil and make the innocent girls life hell by saying this nonsense to all,i oppose this statement coz a girl is not just for having the so called letter sex..........

its wrong and i totally disagree with this statement of that cleric who has said this,at the age of 10 to 20 its the age of a girl to get education not to marry.its nonsense and this child marriage must be banned according to me everywere coz the girls who get marrried at a less age become very weak physically and which is a total injustice to her.our beloved prophet has also said that all the girls and boys have a right to education and choosing there partners and nobady can marry the girl at a lesser age.marrying the girls at a lower age to an aged man is completely wrong.i request you all not to listen and practice what he has said.every girl in life has a dream and aim of becoming something in life and choosing her own partner which islam also agrees.no one can marry the girl with out her consent else that marriage is considered illegal.she can divorce the man whom she doesnt like.

who.am.i said "Can't they wait until girls reach adolescence? 10, 11, 12? Wow! How will they make their 'marriage' work!"

Strictly speaking, they don't need to "make their marriage work". That's why the ideals are different from the western world. The marriage will "work", one way or another. Hopefully, for better but usually to the detriment of wifey.

1) Negative / selfish view - oppressive and infringement of personal liberty - In the marriage, the man is king and the wife is just there to serve him, in every way. The younger the wife is, the more able she will be to bear him heirs and take care of him. Hence, the chattel argument.

2) Positive / selfless view - a choice made by the individual - whether informed or not (eg. blindly following parents' advice)- primary loyalty to family. Dowry needed for parents and younger siblings to survive. Change perspective to see husband as the head of the home and duty bound to provide for and take care of wife. Wife in return appreciates it by taking care of the husband.

Asians (including Middle East Asia) go along the lines of no. 2 but those who abuse things take it to No.1. And yes, while we hear of many such horror stories, I'm not so sure that it's in the majority. It may not be. Just that we hear about and remember the negatives more. A few rotten apples make the whole basket look bad when in reality it might not be.

Socially it is not acceptable even the if sharia allows.. Sort of modifications or let say : update to some rules just to match with the contemporary lifestyle and traditions ...
