Follow the alcohol laws

Doha, April 23 (IANS/AKI) A court in Qatar has sentenced an Asian Muslim migrant to 40 lashes for consuming alcohol.

The Al-Sharq daily said the Muslim migrant, whose nationality was not stated, works as a barber in the Gulf state.

He was arrested after a man reported him to police for allegedly harrassing his maid by plying her with visiting cards with his phone number on them.

For Muslims who may be tempted to drink alcohol--think twice. This could happen to you.

I have witnessed lashes being admintered. They leave marks and are probably painful but do not draw blood.

That someone got lashed.. If a Brit can get lashed then definitely an Asian can... Gosh this is shocking..

To book a room in that same hotel where the bar is and then go up to your room once you are done.. There is no other practical way to get to your bed if you can't even take a taxi home..

Sounds funny that some guys can have it and have all the fun while the others just cannot

This guy must have been carrying a lot of visitng cards to really make this maids employer file a complaint. Must have been a travelling salesman promoting the bottled stuff with onsite demonstrations

That your son was arrested just because he was drunk and hailing a cab.. Whenever I go out to the bar with friends, they hotel staff subtly offer if they can get you a cab eventhough they know you have your own car. I think most people are encouraged to take a cab rather than to drunk drive on the streets of DOha. What are you saying does not make sense, you cannot drive when you drink and you cannot hail a cab when you are drunk which means what? Rent a room in the hotel and then go up and spend the night there since you can't go home drunk???

Lets be clear about the law of Alchol consumption in Qatar.

There is a no tolerance policy here in Qatar.

When push comes to shove ( as we found out when my 18 year old son came over to visit us for Christmas in 2005) you will be arrested if you are found drunk on the streets of Doha.the police told me there was a no tolerance policy .

My son came out of Graveys on boxing day evening after seeing the battle of the bands,(this was before they banned Alchol in their club) and was trying to get a cab at 3 am,he was picked up by the police and arrested and thrown in Jail.I managed to get him out at 10 pm with the help of a Qatari friend.

As far as I know, the law has not changed in this country. What you do in your own house is your own responsibility, but when you are found outside on the streets of Doha drunk, you will be arrested.

That is the law!!

I think the answer is quite simple..

We should boycott these bars till they stop serving Muslims and giving free drinks to ladies. It is a matter of principle..

By BOXBE13• 24 Apr 2013 08:58
BOXBE13

ignore his comment...:)

Let me say it this way....Anything that contains intoxicant is not allowed in islam..the same goes for alcohol

In todays world even the muslims i myself say and saw(especially in my state) drink alcohol .(Astagfurullah)..this is clear indication that these muslims are by name sake only muslims and not following islam what is told about alcohol...In india they are lucky that alcohol is allowed openly and hence no such law...in one such case a muslim friend he drank alcohol and then he came to me and realized his mistake and asked me what to do..he feels guilty for going against islam...so i told do istikara

But in gulf countries atleast there is a law that if a muslim drinks alcohol he gets lashes (because he has gone out of what islam told him)

In this case he teased a woman, drank...khallas...he got the punishment...he is lucky he is not in saudi..else RIP

Muslim or not going out of Control under the influence should be made punishable by 40- 100 lashes. After what we see in India (Delhi) I say this law should be implemented there as well.

That is what most people do and it is the easiest way and the safest.. It is not exactly breaking company rules...

By happygolucky• 24 Apr 2013 08:40
happygolucky

Yep, it is issued as 'to whom it may concern' but while applying online, which seems to be the only acceptable mode now, one need to mention the purpose and "QDC" is one of the items on that list. But obviously then they use other options such as be 'any other purpose' to get the letter.... a bit of cheating the company and risk taking on part of the individual I guess.

I get highly offended if people ask me my religion and I always snub them saying sorry this is a personal question and I do not wish to answer that..

But that is what they get.. Two full glasses, the large champagne flutes of pink bubbly after 8pm.. So just imagine she would be there from 5pm onwards and already had had a few happy hour drinks and then the free bubbly.. Believe me, it was deadly.. I literally had to call a cab and then go next day with my fiance to get my car.. Incidently my fiance was out camping with the boys that Friday so I decided to have a girls night out..

Why do women get free bubbly ?

Surely, this is against equality and can lead them to being intoxicated and thus on to inappropriate behviour :O(

Free Bubbly for women should be outlawed...

I know people who got a letter from our company which by the way happens to be a very prestigious one, saying to who it may concern: SO and so person works for us and his or her total monthly salary plus allowances are such and such.. Please note that letter was not addressed to QDC, it was just to who it may concern.. They took it to QDC and got a liqor permit. Oh by the way there is a religion column in the application form which any smart person would leave it blank because it is not obligatory to mention ur religion, it is a personal thing. You could be a cultural Christian, Jew or a Muslim but in reality you can be an Agnostic or an Athiest so religion is really a very relative term..

By happygolucky• 24 Apr 2013 08:21
happygolucky

I guess to get a QDC permit one needs a letter from the employer and employers for sure know the religion of the individuals and do not (or may not) issue any such letter to them. I have a Malaysian colleague who cannot get QDC permit for the same reason. Can't say if this applies across the board though.

Anyways, I am given to understand that everything is fine until someone makes noise...so no noise, no harm done.

One man is given 40 lashes for sexually harassing a maid while under the influence.

Another man is deported for being an illegal taxi driver.

Tragically flawed laws yet so funny!

Most of my local friends drink, both men and women.. Last week I went to the Wehm lounge at the W with friends and I noticed a sign board outside saying Qatari women are not allowed.. Which means clearly that Qatari men without the their white garb can go in.. As far as the women are concerned, they usually book a room in the hotel then go to the bar and give their room numbers instead of the ID cards and they are let in because hotel guests do not require to present an ID card. If they do not want to do that, they can just go to a five start restaurant which has a bar as well.. For instance the Spice Market or the Market, both restaurants are at the W and they do not ask for ID cards so anyone can go and eat as well as drink.. They have happy hour everyday from 5 to 7 so it does not matter what is your nationality or your dress code, you can go in and drink to your hearts content. Besides that, you can also get in the bar at Kempinsky hotel ground floor without an ID card as long as you get in before 5.. On Fridays they provide free bubbly to all the ladies. Trader Vics at the Hilton also does not ask for an ID so nationality is not an issue.. Most restaurants which serve liqor as well do not ask for ID cards..

Secondly there are no such things as alcohol laws, except that you should not drink and drive or hit on women when drunk, actually do not hit them at all,period.. QDC gives out liqor permits to just anyone who has a reasonably good job and a decent pay slip. They don't ask for religion and in any case most passports in the world do not mention your relgion and even the Qatar ID does not mention religion so how would they know if you are a Muslim or not..

It was his baleful and pervert behavior under the influence that got him into this mess! He is lucky it was just 40 lashes and he wasn't imprisoned and deported as well, something not uncommon given the scenario.

By timebandit• 24 Apr 2013 07:12

Not in the bar. It would spoil the ambience. Lash them in a cubical just outside the bar doors. That way they can have a quick 40 lashes then home to bed.
