Fastest and the Most Furious

Hi all,

I have been driving for almost 1 month and i notice that the people here who drives are far more aggresive compare to my home country. In addition to the size of the car that is mostly huge (Landcruiser etc.), they tend to cut into your front without giving any signals. And i am not talking about locals only, its basically everyone who drives here is like that, of course that includes myself.

For instances, i was driving at a straight main road at almost 120kph, this car behind me just keep on flashing his lights in a very high speed asking for way, that just freaks me out sometimes.

Another example was sometimes, when i was driving on the inner lane of a roundabout, still these people they would come and cut in front of you forcing me to slow down in a sudden...

any one of you have such experience on the road?

whatever you do, if you see someone pull up next to you at a traffic light and notice they aren't wearing their seatbelt, never ever try to convey that particular message by jerking your hand up and down near your shoulder. Some people are experts at misinterpreting gestures. :(

I always thought driving in Qatar especially doha streets needs a different skill than what has thought in Driving Schools (of course many knows driving before reaching school)but mostly its rash driving alaround with SUV's and 4*4's ruling the roads. I would say Good driving reflects ones Personality and behavior, but at times drivers are forced to be arrogant or to take rash driving steps due to the influx of a lot of new drivers (lols) who tends to drive so slow, commit a lot mistakes while driving, etc.

I would like to say that the Traffic Departement and MOI should bring in a lot of changes in the traffic systems, especially the roads and approach roads, etc.I would appreciate if more Traffic Engineers are bought in to Integrate State of Art Technology Systems to the Current one.

wish you all the best, Ramadhan Mubarak

AA, your absolutely right, law enforcement is the key here, the road rules are there, unless people are literally penalised for speed , ad campaigns will just be ignored.

Id like to see drivers penalised for not indicating, i hate having to mind read which direction the bloddy driver is going.

on my drive home I looked at drivers as I passed them - Corrolla, Camry, Tiida, Sunny, all without seat belts. Sorry, it's just plain wrong to single out big SUV drivers. I have a Patrol and always buckle up and drive with my lights on day or night.

Years ago in UK there was a motorbike campaign "Be Seen, Be Safe", aimed at getting bikers to turn their lights on. It worked - I think that holds true whatever your mode of transport.

Did you Google it first?

Who was the m*ron that was accusing mjamilla of getting points with useless posts?

What some consider useless, others may consider usefull, but not all have the required cultural level needed to understand and respect other people opinions, and i have experienced , myself, the same with some posts i made, just wondering if someone else will say that i'm also attacking Islam and muslims wiyh this reply of mine :)

I found another method, dragon, if a "luxury car" which used the slip road to overtake the cue tries to get in, I look the other way. Then they stop, assuming that I don't see them. Never let them know, you are aware of them. That stops them.

If it's the same one that they had in the late 80's early 90's it's not that easy. I agree that there is no theoretical test but the part taken in the "driving stadium" was quite difficult. It originally prompted QP into building a replica for practice.

rami and magicdragon, i must say that i couldnt agree more on this, as those are the people (luxury vehicles driver) who mainly is the one who is inconsiderate on the road~

for me, whenever i see those luxury cars, i ll try to drive slow, let them pass first~do not wan to get into any kind of trouble with them~

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2008 16:10

Rami, I'm here since 1993. I agree with you, the government doesn't want to be stiffer. Too many offenders are in the government themselves!!

I'm not sure when you arrived in Qatar, but when the new traffic laws were released they were full of very stiff fines and penalties.

They were overturned, of course, but the reason given was that they were too 'complicated' for people to understand.

The real reason, of course, was that they would have actually pissed off "people who drive luxury vehicles" because they could no longer just buy their way out of trouble.

The powers that be KNOW that the current laws don't work, and that there are serial re-offenders, but they also know that they can't change them, because "people who drive luxury vehicles" would get annoyed at having to actually follow the law.

Here, A-L, it will only affect the "poorer" people. The "luxury car" drivers pay 50.000 QR fines with a smile at the yearly registration. It just doesn't matter to them. They must lose their license for 3 years or five years, they must go to jail if the are caught driving without license after that, and the must go through a psychological test program if the want to re-new the license after this period. Only then there will be a chance that they realize what they are doing.

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2008 15:59
anonymous

Yeah... there's the old cars that want to give you a bump, or which stop suddenly (because putting your hazard lights on makes anything you do okay) and then there's the new cars which want to run you off the road altogether (because flashing your high beams gives you the complete right to drive as you please).

I think regardless of nationality, the luxury car drivers are particularly bad.

A-L, they want you to obey the traffic laws, because you don't, you're dead. They also want you to understand that your car is a deadly weapon. And they also want to know if you are psychologically fit for driving. In return your license is for life. It doesn't have to be renewed, assuming that you get more experienced with every year you drive.

By anonymous• 16 Sep 2008 15:40

That Gulf Times article was another exercise in pointing out the obvious.

But why did they only refer to people not wearing their seatbelts?

People - "especially those driving luxury

vehicles" (wonderful euphemism) - don't wear seatbelts, they talk on their phone, speed, drive dangerously, park where they like....

So?? Who is surprised by any of that?

The simple fact is that people - "especially those driving luxury vehicles" are terrible drivers. You wonder if they even have a license, some times. And I am often left wondering if the police ever bother to give them fines, since peopl - "especially those driving luxury vehicles" - can always get their corrupt relatives in the traffic department to cancel the violations.

A-L, the driving test in Qatar is a farce!! Go to Germany, study 30 hours or more. Make a theoretical test which even tests your knowledge about the mechanics of a car, then drive half an hour on the Autobahn, then half an hour in the city, and then if you passed all this you are granted a driver license, but you start the insurance of your car at a 200 % rate in the first year.

The laws in this country are used up very quickly. People get used to paying fines. It's normal for them as the following report of the Gulf Times indicates.

MOTORISTS FLOUTING SEAT BELT LAW

Publish Date: Tuesday,16 September, 2008, at 02:11 AM Doha Time

Several motorists, especially those driving luxury

vehicles, are breaking the law by not wearing their seat belts, a random survey conducted by Gulf Times shows.

This is in stark contrast to the situation when the new traffic law came into force in October 2007 warranting heftier fines and even jail for violations. Though every motorist could be seen wearing seat belt for some months thereafter, of late it seems that the initial enthusiasm has waned and many are conveniently flouting the law.
