Britain is the least racist country in Europe

I've only posted an extract from this article - the part which relates to racism - to read the full article, please follow the link.

Britain is the least racist country in Europe, Trevor Phillips, the head of Britain's race watchdog, has said.

Trevor Phillips: 'I believe that Britain is by far - and I mean by far - the best place to live in Europe if you are not white,' he said

Mr Phillips, chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, said that the younger Britons were, the more tolerant they were, thanks to an increasingly racially diverse country where different races meet at school, work and "even across the breakfast table".

But he said some inequalities do still exist for both whites and ethnic minorities.

"Of course, there are still problems - racially motivated attacks on immigrants, the lamentable failure of some institutions to move with the times. But I believe that Britain is by far - and I mean by far - the best place to live in Europe if you are not white," he said.

"When it comes to issues of race, then, this country has a lot to be proud of. When we are at our best, integration works for us because at heart we believe that everyone should be treated with fairness. It's a solid, unflashy, very British sentiment, but it's one of the values that make this country what it is."

The EHRC also commissioned research that showed one in 10 children in the UK is now part of a mixed-race family. The study predicted that, if current trends continued, some ethnic minorities may disappear as people from mixed-race backgrounds become increasingly common.

after she had a brussel sprout and prune vindaloo.

Last seen, she was circling the moon.

That's the problem in multi-cultural societies when recipes from different lands come together. ;o)

i read an article yesterday or the day before yesterday on BBC about the rise of mixed race Britain.. so its not just an opinion of a British person that Britain is becoming less racist

having said that, i still think that something needs to be done about the BNP.

I posted the thread and was the first to joke about that very point.

However, I DO think Britain is much maligned where the racist card is concerned so was happy to see Mr Phillips being so positive.

I worked at the Commission for Racial Equality in London (on a temporary basis) some years ago. I swear I was the only white Brit there! hee

more or less says the same as Telegraph one as it relates to (and quotes from) Trevor Phillips' speech, which also referred to other areas of segregation. The Mail, however, adds the result of another survey which has to do with how Muslims are integrating in the UK.

So, a brit, says that Britain is the least racist country in Europe... That doesn't seem very objective.

"well, he would, wouldn't he!" :D

But hopefully that's just cos of my idiot sense of humour.

I only have first hand knowledge of the area I live in, in the UK, but can vouch for that as being happily multi-cultural.

So I really hope the EHRC's statistics are correct,'cos that would make me a very happy little Briton.

Got to agree with him. Yes, racism exists (both ways), but compared to the rest of Europe, Britain is heaven for ethnic minorities.
