How many of you use a PC with an Intel processor (especially the Core and Atom series) as your main PC?

Well said Mandi, same premise that not all arabs are muslim and not all muslims are terrorists. Grouping everyone into the same mould is a dnagerous thing.

DMS, the title isnt calling for a boycott, it is simply the list as published by a boycott group... and if I can read correctly, you called me a hypocrite, sorry to take offense at that.

WAIT a minute (just woke up, it's Sunday morning here)! I have no problems with boycotting Israeli products (if you can find any beside Teva) or even American products (good luck) but I am very put off with the idea of targeting "Jewish" products. Don't we all deplore making negative judgments based on religion? Not all Jews are Zionists, you know. Turning this into an anti-Jewish diatribe is unpleasant, unattractive and unworthy of QL.

Otherwise, have a nice day.

what I am trying to say is, the emotions now is high (not only you) and in such, the call for boycott (it's the title of the post, Amoud so I presumed you are for one), is uncalled for.

BTW, its the purpose I am calling a hypocrisy, not you. Because we need a long term solution for such action, not a short term solution such as boycotting a vast list of products like that.

Targeted boycots can have an affect on the economy of the country. You have to llok at products / services being generated out of Israel and focus on those.

The best way to bring Israel to the negotiating table is to put a "squeeze" on its energy, food and water demand. But this requires a concerted effort and can't see it happening in the current climate.

If you read all the posts I havent really taken a stance, I was blown away by the lists and posted it. Any comment I had after was something relayed to me by a woman who lost a child in this conflict.

By the way DMS, I wasnt calling for a boycott at all.

Boycotts are useless. Did boycotting Danish products actually cause the Danes to do anything? No. The only effect of boycotting these things is to hurt the people you don't want to hurt i.e. the guy serving you your big mac at McDonalds.

then you are a hypocrite. Your hatred for Jews and Israel is so grossed that your being blinded by reasons already. When will such a boycott (at that magnitude) will ever be successful?

Are you saying that Middle East countries should boycott games sponsored by these big companies? Who are the major sponsors for big sporting events?

Most are not in favor of the Gaza incidents now, but calling for such boycott, what will it bring?

At the end of the day, only Sympathizers in the middle east (i.e. Mostly Muslims) would end up boycotting, so the result to the "Big Boys" would be pretty negiligable.

KDD (Kuwiat Danish Dairies) and Dania (Danish Fruit Juice etc) both reported thus after the cartoon debacle, after all the middle east is not that heavily populated compared to the rest of their market.

Can you really justify that if people are protesting becuase of a situation such as what is happening in Palestine that all efforts should be stopped because someone MAY loose a job, and someone MAY die because of this?

Like I said cynbob - no one actually burnt their bras!

Eco - if we all went round quitting our jobs because our companies had some connection with something we didn't agree with then EVERYONE would be out of a job. Try to have some perspective - as far as I'm aware the company MacDonalds is not directly killing people in the Middle East (cue jokes about bad burgers, over eating etc etc).

But if you boycott MacDonalds, for example, in Qatar I really don't think it's going to affect the company. I think the MacDonalds here are all franchises, so all you'll succeed in doing is maybe put the franchise out of business and leave all the staff without jobs. MacDonalds' profits will barely notice the impact. None of the people you affect will be American/Israeli/Jewish. They'll be Qatari and Filipino.

By Amoud• 4 Jan 2009 11:53

Alrighty, as it is seen that the US is a great supporter of Israel this is why US companies are also targeted.

Cynbob, by boycotting Israeli and US companies they are actually wanting to put the litte US and Israeli guys out of work.... This is the thinking, not saying it is the perfect logic.

I think that Britexpat has the bigger picture.

You have the BIG BOYS and then the BIGGER BOYS that own these companies.

By LITTLE BOYS, I mean the worker bees that work for the BIG BOYS that work for the BIGGER BOYS.

Then you have the masses that won't give up their preferred products for the greater good.

Another great example of boycotts working is the Dixie Chicks' ordeal. Although, they did come back and win several awards for their Taking The Long Way album. (I believe that is the name of the album.)

Amoud, I think that if this is going to be a successful venture, specific products have to be researched and targeted and the masses have to be on board to be effective.

By anonymous• 4 Jan 2009 11:49

Why Arsenal football club then?.......mmmmm not sure that boycotting these products would actually be carried out....these are US products anyway whats the significance?

By Amoud• 4 Jan 2009 11:39

I think perhaps there is a bit of a misunderstanding here... I am in no way suggesting these boycotts (especially with this expanse list) will be effective. I personally do not go to Starbucks, MacDonalds, etc and I do not drink soda (odd occasion). I do think everyones little bit helps...

I recall a similar request a few years back in Saudi. Starbucks and Coca Cola were to be the main targets.

It didn't work. Firstly because the people weren't focused or strong willed enough. Secondly, the "local franchises" for these companies were "owned" by those in power.

However, we have seen boycotts work. South Africa is a prime example and more recently Denmark, after the cartoon debacle.

By Amoud• 4 Jan 2009 11:23

Cynbob, what little guys would that be??

If they are loosing enough revenue for them to be laying off people then I am sure they are taking a bit of a hit.

I dont think your views would actually mean much to a Palestinian woman who has come to get her child from school to find the school is not there anymore. All things in perspective..

Brit... Starbucks is a big one, as well as Coca cola and Marlboro....

People need to look at the bigger picture. The BIG JEWISH/ISRAELI BOYS of these companies won't be phased. It is the LITTLE GUYS, the ones that will be out of the job that earns them the money that puts food on the table.

For a boycott to work, we should first focus on a few companies with specific links to Israel.

It IS a rather long list, and I suspect that tallg is correct when he says there are many more companies with Jewish/Israeli ties that aren't listed here. But c'mon -- the Gulf Arab region has become such a consumer society that there is no way they will ever pull of a meaningful boycott of any consequence. Without their flashy cars, mobile phones, designer clothes and handbags and make-up/perfume, they'd be lost. This place has become a land of Paris Hiltons. It might make some feel better about themselves, that they're doing their part to help alleviate the current situation, but collectively it won't amount to very much...

AS I said above, M&S is no longer Jewish. They announced to the world who all their shareholders now are and not a single Jew has any major say in the company anymore. That's not to say there are not a few 1 or 2 share holders, but this was the catalyst to KSA allowing them to trade there.

As for Danone, OKC etc. By boycotting these you are affecting a local Arab company with local employees. Who will you really hurt the most?
