to have LLC company WLL, also u need to deposit an amount of QR 200,000 in the bank for about two days maximum. to get capital certificate, its just like proof of fund, to start the business, to avoid the office stuff, and the capital amount, u can join existing company and open a branch, it just like subsidiary company, with new name and separate name as well, in this case you dont need an office, and that will cost around QR 4,000 only.

I looked at starting a business myself. The process is actually very simple and can be done in one day. Even setting up an LLC. All the concerned bodies are in the 1st and ground floor of the Ministry of Economy so in effect it is a one stop shop. Also you can find offices below QR5000 so that is not a hindrance. The only thing left is finding a Qatari sponsor.

Are there any legal ways to circumvent the requirements? Definitely NO!

Primarily, setting up a business on the very first place needs an ample requirements to comply.

What reasons may cause the authorities here to reject the registration of a Limited Liabilities Company?? if the documents needed are complete and all required setup (Qatari partner, location .. etc) for the company is in place, do they still need to have a decision whether to accept the company registration or not !!!???

If your business is IT based then try locating it at the Qatar Science and Technology Park. You are allowed 100% foreign ownership at the Park so that means no Qatari partner! (at least that is what they claim).

no.. it doesn't work this way..They don't change their requirements depends on the type of business.. the rule for everyone is the same. You submit certain documents (including proved office location), then they decide either to approve or or to reject it...

Thanks, qatarisun. . .but what about a business that is computer-based? In other words, no clients coming to the house, no funky chemicals, no deliveries, etc.?

I’ll tell you why is that. Government is strict with the separation business areas from the residential ones. Certain type of businesses you simply cannot run from your home… For example you definitely cannot run a hair salon from your home, because your clients will be coming and going for the entire day and it might disturb your neighbours. Even if you found the office for your business, they have to check whether the area you have chosen appropriates for this type of business. Some certain businesses are allowed in one area and not allowed in other..That’s why they ask for your proved business location. .

My biggest hurdle is the office space. I don't need office space since I would "work" from home. It seems like such a bizarre requirement. . .

There are many hurdles in setting up a small business in Qatar ie. finding a trustworthy Qatari partner(LUCK+PRAYER!), the fixed amount one needs to show the Ministry of Economy in order to register the W.L.L(LLC) but these are not nothing compared to finding a shop/office which is mandatory.

Rents of commercial spaces are scary compared to that of residential.

One needs to pay "key money" to the real estate agent if its a new building or "occupation money" if you buy the shop/office from the previous tenant. Rents for a small office/shop start from QR.10k and go upwards.

The legal hurdles are cakewalk actually; There are people/agencies who do the crappy paperwork etc. but they get it done by hook or crook for a fee.

The REAL obstacle one might face would be finding an office/shop with reasonable rents.

Damn these real estate sharks and middlemen!

(1) Legally you can't run a business unless you have a local partner, so it depends on finding the right partner.

(2) It depends on your finances and what the business is, and most have been covered already.

As we say in Ireland can you bothered? It is all down to your local partner and that is if you are lucky enough to get one. You're kidding yourself.

yeah, and even if you eventually succeeded to register your business, you must be a real shark, otherwise other sharks will eat you up in no time..

my friend tried and failed to open a small business here. she lost so much money..mainly all of her savings and some borrowed money. it's very risky. she ended up leaving doha! :-( there is a lot of red-tape, tricky laws and things take so much time to process. it's pretty complicated, as i remember her talking about all of the complications to me as they were happening.

Starting a small business still needs alot of big contacts , 1stly a Qatari Sponsor who should be trustworthy enough to start a joint venture with !!and most important is getting a Licenses from the GOV. especially if its food or any retail trade !

doha is still a Raw market for the next 3 years i feel , so the Gov. should become more liberal on sole business ownership by Expats !

But if u have a really good idea in todays market , just go on the look for a Local who u can impress with ur business plan and INSHALLAH it should take off !

LLC means limited liability company, basically meaning if the business goes under the bank can't go after personal assets. The chamber of commerce should have info that would help in setting up a business. You will need a Qatari sponsor, that's to ensure that Qataris get the benefit of the business (at least 51% ownership - how you divide profits is another issue)
