My husband has recently accepted a job at Hamad. I will be coming with him and would really like to try to find a job on my own. I have contacted a few agencies who say they don't have anything right now. I would like to try to find something before we come so that I could have all paperwork and such together beforehand. Anyone know of any openings in an Operating Room. I have 13 years experience.

Thanks!!

Hi all.

I'm interested to know more about Aspetar- Ortho and Sports Med Hospital. I'm an RN from Singapore with 5 years of working experience in Ortho nursing and planning to specialize in Ortho later this year.

I would like to know the benefits of working at Aspetar. What's the pay like? Housing for single female? How accessible Aspetar is to employee/nursing housing, ammenities, transport?

Thanks

My husband has an interview with a company tomorrow and I'm doing some research and trying to get some info.  I am a Canadian RN with 5 years ortho experience and have just completed a critical care program.  What is the best way to apply to Aspetar?  Do they have an ICU.  Glad to hear you enjoy working there, it's nice to hear some positive info.

Hi Alina, where are you from?because we have the same name...

Last year, dw has given up on nursing jobs in Doha.  For non-Western educated nurses, the pay is so low (QR3000) that it isn't really worth it.  (The money may be OK for a nurse who would earn even less at home.)  Also, the experience is nothing.  The duties of RNs in Doha are so simple (handing the doctor instruments or doing simple injections).

She went through so many hassles with Hamad Hospital, trying to get employment.  She wasn't one of the nationalities which dominate the staff at Hamad so people stalled her and wouldn't give her appointments or schedule her to take this or that course.  Her heart is broken from Hamad Hospital and she doesn't want to have anything to do with the nursing scene here.

Now that we both want to leave Qatar -->  it is good timing.

Hello Dianapilar, i was new too and did exactly what you did by posting my question in one of the forums and i never got any respond, so i changed my strategy and went under forums, then under opportunities then i selected post a new forum topic and jotted my question by that i did get good responds. I guess poeple look at the questions which draws them to answer the question, but for you your question is under the question i asked so you will not get enough responds only those people interested in the topic will be seeing it, which limits them answering or seeing the question. So i would encourage you to open a new forum with your question and i bet you will get good responds. I hope that helps and good luck in your search.

Hey Sioghanhill

My partner is about to arrive in Doha, is a well qualified Aussie RN and hoping to get a job at Aspetar (or anywhere else for that matter).  I'm not sure how these forums usually work, but is there any way I could get your email or contact details so she can give you a call as she's quite tense / stressed about the whole idea of finding work here and I think it would be a great help if she could speak to another western nurse?

Can you help?

Actually, dw (darling wife) is looking for a fellow Asian nurse to help find a job.  The only jobs in Doha for Asian nurses pay quite poorly (QR1000-3000/month) and is barely worth the agitation of driving there.  But if there are better-paying jobs for Asian nursing jobs out there, please let us know.

Hamad has one or two Western nurses or from Australia, however, they are in senior positions and are well paid + accomodation. Mostly the nurses come from the Philippines or Southern continent and yes locally employed people are paid peanuts.

New rules state that Qataris have now the priority for senior positions which means that highly paid positions covered by non-Qataris will finally be given to Qataris.

Actually the Gulf does attract western nurses, to hospitals with good packages that is ,thats why theres probably none (could be wrong) at the Hamad cos the pay is bad. Where I work they are all western nurses and I would say about 98% are not local hire

The gulf does not attract any western nurses.

The vast majority of western nurses working here are here accompanying their husbands and then get a job as local hire just to keep a) busy b) keep their registration. Having said that most western nurses with University degrees get senior positions.

Princess Habibah...that is what dw (darling wife) has done.  Instead of looking for a RN job paying virtually nothing, she's studying here to get a BSN.

Compared with what the hospitals were offering dw, QR9000 looks attractive.  dw is Asian so the hospitals wanted to pay her QR2000 for the first three months.  (BTW, don't shoot the messenger!  I don't agree with this racism but it is part of the system!)  After the first 3 months, they may be a small increase.  That is ridiculous.  Back in her home country, she could make much more than that.   You may be wondering, then, why are we here?  Because my salary is higher in the Middle East than in Asia.

By princess habibah• 17 Feb 2008 16:13

Gosh how does the gulf attract any western nurses on a 9k QR salary

That is pitiful compared to what they make in the states or Canada.. Especially an RN!

I believe some of my family members gross about 80k a year at least!

On this salary.. it will be more like 30k dollars a year.. Not even worth getting out of bloody bed if your a nurse and have to do all that back breaking work and plus deal with beaurocracy.

In Hamad there are many foreign nurses employed and have they achieved a great deal. Contrary to many opions Hamad is improving and achieved JCI certification recently.

Being emlpoyed by Hamad takes time because of the visa and sponsorship compliances but if you are sponsored by your husband then you will not have any difficulty.

Doha Clinic is not the largest hospital in Doha Hamad is and Hamad also has many PHC centres .

If you are really interested I would advise you to go directly to any of the clinics or hospitals and get you information there.

Everyone has different experiences and a different viewpoint, however, if take a some of the advice from Ql member and some advice from the hospitals you should manage to form your own opion about working.

Alina,  it's a jungle out there in trying to get a nursing job as a local hire.  My Canadian colleague was offered QR9000/month by al-Alhi hospital (or Hamad).  She's a RN from Canada but thought it wasn't worth it so she joined my company.  Also, her duties were so limited and she felt the attitude to patient care was so lacking that she felt she didn't want to join there.

My dw (darling wife) is an RN and spent more than a year here wrestling with the government and hospitals.  Hamad insisted she do their mandatory IRS course which took a few months just to sign-up to.  There was a lot of "hallas hallas" stalling down at that government health office next to LuLu Centre.  She eventually got certified to work here.  Then, she worked for a few months at a plastic surgery clinic near The Mall (She has stories to tell of the kind of patients who came in!).  At first, they let her remain under my sponsorship but then they insisted she goes under their sponsorship (so she quit).  Now she has approached a bigger hospital (Doha Clinic Hospital) but they want her to complete the CGFNS test (she's a non-Western educated nurse and this is a credential-verification service).

As you can see, you need to spend some time researching the scene.  Since you're a Canadian nurse (according to your profile), your salary WILL be higher and hospitals will be happier to hire you.

If you need help on government contacts to hire, please PM me.

Thanks Nata, but do you mean if am a western regardless of me being hired local or overseas, my pay will be according to my nationality? Will i also be able to get my own sponsership from the hospital or will they want me to have my husband's sponsership? Please help.

You can work as a nurse here, you will need to register with the NHA so bring original certificates, transcripts etc etc with you. If you get a job once you have arrived you will get no benefits as you will be local hire. Try and get a contract from home - not easy as most of the reqruitment is done in the Philipines and India.

What sort of nursing do you do? If you have orthopedic experience try Aspetar Hospital, a new orthopedic and sports injury hospital, they have a large proportion of western nurses, great working hours but I am not sure what the pay is like - this varies according to you nationality( I know it is crazy) and whether contraceted from Overseas or are local hire.
