everybody discouraged you to come.

The goodness and evilness of a place is in the people who works on it. I think a lot have bad experience here and yet they are still here.

Come on, Maggie, find a way to go here but definitely the legal ways. I know how you feel there in Shanghai and opportunity for local Chinese there is to go out. I know what the local Chinese (specially the youth or newly-graduates)feels or eagerness to see the outside world whether to work or just tour.

Yes it's true that many chinese nationals here in Doha are giving China a bad reputation, but if ever they will experience living in Shanghai, they will realize that what they are seeing here is just the tip of the iceberg.

But a lot of young Chinese men and women worked with me and I know how industrious you people are. And if you are an english major, it means that you are prepared to work internationally. There is no harm in trying. I DO ENCOURAGED TO TRY AND LOOK FOR YOUR LUCK AND FUTURE NOT ONLY HERE BUT ANYWHERE YOU SO WISHES.

Dear Maggie,

Don't waste your time and come to Doha if you don't have work experience and education.Don't u ever dream of coming if u don't have a job from an employer who will pay your ticket down here.Don't also go for any job in Qatar without a soild contract. It's true but bitter that Chinese ladies are looked down upon here cos some of them are seen around Ramada,Sheraton,Marriot every night.

Ironically, my wife is Chinese. She's an Architect so my friends and employers in Qatar respect her.Anytime she sees Chinese ladies hawking at night she feels very bad.

All in all, don't fool yourself and don't be fooled by anyone.Qatar is not that rosy as u think.Stay in Shanghai and go to better countries in Europe and America where u can develop yourself and at the same be respected by people.

If you still read this message and you still in China, you should come and find out yourself if this is the place you like to stay. 1 year or 1 month will not make a difference, the key is you want to see that guy right? and you want to understand his background because you love him so much.

just like whoever said, don't give your passport to your employer, come as traveller and feel the place. I just landed Doha and going to start my expat life here in a happy way. frankly, the weather, the envirnoment and anything else is not so flavorable for me, but financial reward is what I wanted.

To enrich your life please go to UAE in Middle East, Paris in Europe, NewYork in USA, HK in China, Tokyo in Japan. You won't enrich too much by coming here, cos working as servant, sales person or anything like this doesn't enrich anything in life.

Goodluck, just in case you are in Doha already let me know, we have a chinese community here ready to help new comers.

As a Chinese living in Doha I think Sage is NOT hurt you but protect you.

i really feel so unhappy about your words,i also don't know why you respect Arab so much and disrespect Chinese so much. you realy don't have the right to say Chinese people this way, if i go to Doha,i really want to meet you and beat you.of course i won't do it, i just want you know how angry i am about you.

you think i am still expecting something more from the relationship with the guy,and want to marry him, right?let me tell you,you are absolutely wrong, who do you think they are,if you come here, you will find Chinese hasband is the best in the world, earning money outside, also cooking washing at home,i heard that one man in Doha can have four wives.don't suppose Chinese girls want to marry foreigners!!

i think you must don't have the true love in life, when you judge a love, what you care about is just exterior factors.although i didn't contact with him now, it is not because the nationality.i am 21,he is 25,we are equal about everything when we are together, also we are so happy to talk about anything we interested.no matter what the result is,i cherish every friend and love.not WASTING TIME.

by the way,i know a Chinese girl marry a Arab, and the girl live in Doha with his family, and the girl said in her blog she is very happy now,and friend around her all treat her well, the only thing she don't adapt is just her mother-in-law don't allow she to wear bikini.

I have to disagree. I personally think fair and constructive criticism is a good thing and should be welcomed. You shouldn't wait to be asked for some. What would you do if you disapprove of one of your friends for a good reason? Do you wait to be asked for an opinion or do you criticize them exactly because they are your friends and you care?

I have to agree though that destructive critics, insults etc. are not acceptable, specially if you are a guest in some place you should show respect and if you don't like it you can always leave. Although I understand also that sometimes you may be really fed up and just cannot help it …

Maggie:

If I were you, I would bet to any other places rather than Doah. Sage778 is right: I have been offered several times money here in Doha while I was walking around my neighborhood.

I work: Luckily with a chinese company so I get desent income + allowance. But even like this I find out it's very difficult for me to work in this conutry ( I work in construction sector). You won't realise the difference cause back home is very common that female also work on site but here I have been considered as a Giant Panda.....as a engineer.

Shanghai is so lovely, I stayed there before, and if you do wish to change a country for any reason, choose any other places: Try Europe or US, I worked in both as I did enjoy my stay.

The night life in Doha is ZERO if you compare to Shanghai!! Shopping mall is Zero if you compare to Shanghai.

Only culture is WORK.

Dear Maggie: Think over before you jump.

P.S: My company will transfer me back to China soon. The first GOOD news for the Golden Pig year.

No Qatar is not fair and just. Few if any place in the world is. There are many things here that are grotesquely unfair and there are many changes that I would like to see happen.

However, you always seem to concentrate on the negative aspects to the life here. There are many good things as well. This country is a work in progress, but it is not your country and it is not mine. If they want our criticism maybe they will ask for it and possibly they will listen to constructively made suggestions.

What doesn't help though is constant criticism by us know it all westerners. It achieves nothing but bad feeling.

By ooo• 28 Feb 2007 11:22
ooo

Maggie, could you come on a short visit instead? Would that be doable for you? You come on vacation, feel the places a bit, the culture a bit. Are you still in good terms with this guy and is he in the country? If so maybe you can get to spend sometime with him in his environment … After that you make up your mind and decide if you really want to relocate here.

See, I understand the all toughening up thing in a hard environment, you are so young, sooner or later you'll find yourself in unavoidable difficult time/situations that will make you stronger. Just don't jump cold into this thing.

By maggie• 28 Feb 2007 08:17
maggie

i still will try my best to reach my dream, i also believe a hard environment can give me a better chance to improve myself, learning how to be myself under pressure, learning how to live happily when i am really lonly, learning how to overcome different kinds of problems in a country not friendly to Chinese people.

the reason i why i choose the place is because i once love someone in the city, i just want to feel the city by myself, not because still love or hate him.i really have too much questions about the cultural difference, there are too much "why" in my head,i can't understand why he will think this way or say such word, so i want to find the answer by my own eyes,my own feeling.

i know i must do it,but i don't know when i can reach it, only God knows!

I suggest you check everyday the classified ads in Gulf Times newspaper if you seek for a job. You can also check it on line, www.gulf-times.com. That's how i got my job. You can also advertise your skills, capabilities and qualifications for the Situation Wanted section.

You said you graduated with an English major, maybe you should try to offer English lessons to those who want to learn English. If you are focus on getting a job, you will probably get one here .Just be a bit patient for there is no such thing as "rushing" here.

It's true, life is not easy here. But you can enhance and enjoy your life here if you see it in a different point of view. If you take pleasure in small things like a walk in Al Corniche or

a monthly RVR ride in the desert, you will get by.

There can be some enriching parts to this country Richard and Liana, but do you really think that the same things that are available to you are available to a single young chinese girl?

I hate to say it but no Qatari's are going to offer to take her out to the desert (at least not for duning) niether are they going to take her sailing or diving. Unfortunately, regardless of what her actual occupation is, here she will be regarded as little more than a prosititute. :(

Undoubtedly you can experience new things and enrich yourself in Qatar, as in any other country for that matter, but the question here is another in my opinion. We cannot pretend there are not issues in this place, specially if you carry the "wrong" passport, so I think it is fair that Maggie gets the full picture, both the rosy and the dark side of Qatar. Then she can make up her mind.

This is a complicated society but it can be very enriching. Try spending a weekend in the desert with a Qatari family, attending a Magilist, learning Arabic, learning to dive, going fishing and sailing with Qataris.

I have done all of these things. It is not easy to make the connections, you have to make the effort but like many other things in life, the more effort you make, the better the rewards.

I think you do most things here that you can do anywhere else. I admit, I miss mountains and climbing and greenery but there are plenty of good things here and some very fine people. Just go and out and find them.

Lots of jobs....

Salaries in the same field vary a lot with nationality.

Qatar taxes income by housing rent (50% mininum) so if you manage to get a job make sure the company houses you or at least pays you the amount of your rent (even if it increases). You will need QR 1000 for food & other expenses if single. Anything above that you can save, depending on how much you want to save.

I would say the minimum one should ask for should be QR 2000 above the Rent, else you would be really wasting your time and youth. Although there are Construction workers who work for QR700 which would be roughly what they earn in their own countries.(SriLankans & Nepalis mostly come here to get away from the civil war in their countries so they are willing to work for so low.)

Qatar is booming in 2 sectors Oil/Gas and Construction. 1st is Nationalised so you may find it difficult to get into. The second is not a boom its a BLAST. Theres always jobs in Construction Companies. All other services are growing because of these two.

Sage I dont know how you can say those things about Qatar. I can only presume that you havent really bothered to scratch the surface of the country to get past its "outer shell", you might discover its not as empty as you think.

Honestly, if you want to enrich your life then Qatar is the worst place I can think of, honestly.

Qatar is the definition of an empty shell. Nothing of substance here whatsoever.

Here you have an entire displaced foreign population - all here for working only! There is no culture here. Work is the culture.

As for the geography...the worst found anywhere in the world. No trees, no rivers, no lakes, no mountains, lots of traffic though, terrible climate, etc. etc.

Combine that with no fun at all, unfair pay based on your nationality, and the surrender of your passport.

If that is your idea of enriching your life... go for it!

Thank you for your advice,it is really helpful,Also,i have a different thinking about the city now,but if i have chance i still will go there.

the reason why i go there is not for money, and i can have a good life in China, and i only want to work one year there,i just want to enrich my life, know more about the world, like now,i know their attitude about chinese girls, hooker,i think there must be some Chinese people do it there, but not all!what others look at me is not important, the point is that i know what i am doing.

i know that is a rich place because of oil, but only rich material life, shanghai people is not that rich, but i really suggest they can visit here, they will know how wonderful this city is, how great the people is and how happy the life is.money is not everything, it is only one tool for us to reach happiness, and i am happy now.

people there can look down upon Chinese people,it doesn't matter, cause we are so proud of ourselves.

I would advise you to pick a different place. Many people will view you as nothing but a prostitute in Qatar.

Yes Doha is a tough city to live in and the cost of living will cause you to save little to nothing each month. Plus they aren't going to pay you what you're worth because you are Chinese. Chinese are put into the lower-income bracket in Qatar - that is just the way it is over here. Not fair, I know.

If you do go...don't let them take your passport from you because then you may find yourself working at the Oasis just so you can buy back your freedom.

I hope this helps.
