High Turnover of People at Qatar
Its nice that a lot of new people join this site and ask questions about life at Qatar. Many of them are new and excited about living at Qatar..However there is an untold story of 100s of people who come to Qatar and leave quietly within their first two years...In Most govt. department/Major Private Companies..a serious shortage of Manpower is obvious..yet daily farewells are norm..(So much so that after much ridicule some companies withdrew the actually number of vacancies on their websites)
Why is it that people leave Qatar so early?? What disappoints them?? Delivery of services or interaction with Govt./Police/Immigration/ QTEL?? Is it the attitude of the Qatari People?? Is anyone actually buying properties in Pearl Qatar?? Do people have ANY sense of belonging while they leave a lot behind and join with their families and yet decide to go back quick??
Any Ideas??
well, several reasons... if they are working for qatarairways where the term "job security" is unheard of this could be one. this is one company where in a single flick of the ceo's finger you can loose your job (depending on his mood). it's better to leave the country early with your pride still intact.
another reason is the high living cost. majority of workers spend 50-60% of their salary on housing alone. and you still have to eat, send money to your love ones, etc....
weather is a killer. 40 to 53 degrees during summer. whew!!
now that other job opportunities are sprouting just about anywhere in the world, i think most people are looking for greener and peaceful pastures.
my family and i are planning to join them soon... wish us luck!
If you follow that approach Jenni, you will survive with no problems. Things can be changed in Qatar..... but subtly!
Red Indian! I haven't heard that one in a long time. My mother would say that they normally prefer the term Native Americans or Canadians.
Jimmy chook: You do have to change your diet, get used to American Fast food chains.
I think one of the main reasons for the high turnover of foreign staffs in Qatar is that they have too high expectations prior to coming to Qatar. It would be less painful if your expectations are lower. Different people and culture shock among others are common denomination for complaints. Qatar cannot be the same as London or New York. The more realistic you are about all the new things you experience in Qatar while you r there, the better you adapt to the place. Or do like the Qataris do while U are there. What about the food in Doha by the way? Do I have to change my diet to fit in ?
The post was actually on a topic of people who come to work at Qatar..Not live here or apply for citizenship..
Who were the original Americans by the way?? Has anyone respected the way of life of Red Indians?? Or its a new wisdom suddenly dawned?? Just trying to counter your argument for the debate to proceed (no personal reposte meant)..
If Qatar is not your country respect that! America needs to do that they need to stop allowing people from other countries to come over here and try to change our way of life! If we have in God we Trust on our money and if you do not like it TOUGH!! Stay Home! If you do not like the Pledge of Allegiance! Tough! Stay Home!
When one goes to be a guest in another country one should respect their laws and abide by them! Period!

I don't intend to stay longer than 2 years, 3 at the most. I'm 25, someday I would like to meet a guy and get married, that's not going to happen here in Qatar. Also I would like to further my education and I don't think the educational opportunities are very good here.
Also I think after 3 years I will be bored out of my mind.
One of the long standing problems causing people to leave so quickly after arriving is a failure to adapt. If not the employee than the family. They try to impose what they see as their views and standards. You have to go with the flow. There are ways of introducing changes rather than the "full frontal" assault that many try. i.e. In our country we do it this way. Qatar isn't your country so recognise that!
Changes are being made and rapidly.
From what I have heard about some private companies, there seems to be a serious lack of professionalism, constructive communication skills and coherent procedures. The govt bureaucracy also seems to be onerous.
I've only been here since mid January and I feel like:
- nothing is enforced (i.e. laws),
- housing IF you can find it is "bend over" priced, and
- Q-Tel's monopoly sucks.
