Qatar’s Public Prosecution completes investigation into Central Doha building collapse

Almost a month ago, the entire country was shocked when a building in Central Doha collapsed, leading to deaths and several injuries. Authorities, who immediately launched a probe into the incident, have now come out with their findings.
The Public Prosecution issued a statement on Tuesday stating investigation into the building collapse has been completed. The Attorney General’s office explained the findings of the investigations. They are as follows:
1. The execution of the building’s construction was different from the design drawings. The width of some sectors was changed to 20cm from 25cm and 30cm. Besides, the diameter of fortification iron bars was changed from 25mm to 18mm.
2. The reduction of columns’ width and diameter of iron bars throughout the construction and building phase resulted in reduction and abolishment of safety margins often followed in building designs.
3. The company which carried out maintenance work did not obtain the necessary permit and license.
4. Residents were not evacuated to carry out the main maintenance work to the building’s columns.
5. Safety procedures were not taken into account in the maintenance work, as there were no supports capable of carrying big loads.
6. The company that carried out maintenance work for the building is not qualified to carry out the required maintenance work.
The investigations concluded that those held responsible for the tragedy include the main contractor, project consultant, building owner, and the company which carried out the maintenance work. Therefore, the Attorney General issued a decision to refer the accused to the Criminal Court.
