Qatari economy expects QAR 90.8bn tourism windfall this year, says report
Qatar’s Travel and Tourism sector is expected to contribute QAR90.8bn to the country’s economy this year, according to a report by the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2024 Economic Impact Research (EIR).
The amount, which translates to around 11.3% of total revenues, follows a record-breaking year for tourism.
The country’s tourism sector is also expected to create jobs for more than 334,500 people, representing 15.8% of total workforce, said a report in VisaGuide.
The report suggests that international traveler spending in 2024 is expected to rise significantly, with international tourists bringing in QAR 69.6bn and domestic travelers coughing up QAR12bn.
The WTTC report showed that in 2023, Qatar’s travel and tourism sector set new records in GDP contribution, jobs, and domestic traveler spending.
GDP contribution from the tourism sector surged 31%, hitting a historic high of QAR81.2bn, accounting for 10.3% of the country’s total economic output.
Over 20,300 new tourism jobs were created, bringing the total to nearly 286,000, equivalent to one in every eight jobs in the country.
Domestic spending by travelers also hit a new peak at QAR1.4bn. Despite hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup and seeing a nearly 40% increase in spending by international visitors to QAR 60.4 billion, it fell short of the previous peak by QAR1.2bn.
“While international visitor spending is lagging behind the previous peak, the government’s efforts and emphasis on collaboration will propel Qatar’s Travel and Tourism growth, setting the stage to play a crucial role in the national economic landscape, promising a future defined by prosperity and opportunity,” said WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson.
By 2034, the global tourism industry is anticipated to boost its yearly GDP contribution to over QAR135bn, constituting nearly 13% of Qatar’s economy. Almost 458,000 new employment opportunities are expected to open up.
