Qatar fights COVID-19 with its largest vaccination campaign ever

Qatar continues to fight the COVID-19 pandemic with all its might as it runs the largest-ever vaccination campaign in its history.

With the progress of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Program, Qatar is ranked among the top ten countries in the world, in view of its population, and has one of the lowest death rates globally.

This is owed to the country’s emphasis on high quality and excellence in its health care system.

About 9 of 10 people above the age of 60, which is the group most at risk of disease, have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, with nearly 8 out of 10 people in this group now fully vaccinated.

More than two and half million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered to citizens and residents of Qatar, as of mid-May 2021.

Over 1,170,000 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine so far, with about 35,000 doses during only 24 hours.

About 52 percent of the adult population in Qatar has received at least one dose of the vaccine so far, while 36.5 percent of the adult population has received both doses of the vaccine.

Qatar offers the vaccine at 35 centers, in addition to some drive-through vaccination centers for people taking their second shot.

The country’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) launched the National COVID-19 Vaccination Program in December 2020. Presently, two COVID-19 vaccines are approved for emergency use in Qatar, namely Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

MoPH also recently began accepting registrations from parents to have their children aged 12-15 vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.

The campaign also prioritized teachers to ensure the continuation of the educational process.

So far, a large percentage of teachers and administrators in schools have been vaccinated, as Qatar is also one of the first countries to vaccinate educational and administrative cadres in schools.

Health workers were also given priority for the vaccine, due to their significant role in delivering health care. Frontline workers in many ministries and state institutions have been vaccinated.
